Quote (Silverlance @ 13th April 2007 14:29) It's just that gaming, past a certain age, becomes lame. At that age, you should be out meeting people and socializing, as well as doing "real" things. Obsessing with games means sacrificing socializing time (and no, playing Squal_249 in some online FPS doesn't count.) We consider the FF series to be great, but that's subjective. The truth is, to someone who doesn't play games as much as we have in our younger days/still do in our day to day lives, an RPG would suck. It's slow and there's very little action in them. Seriously, compared to having my ass handed to me by Rugal in KoF2k2 (2k3?), trying to figure out what to do when two of my characters are dead, the other poisoned, and the last equipped with the atma weapon, the illumina, a genji glove, and an offering, is a joke. The bottom line, and these are just my thoughts, is that whatever floats your boat is absolutely fine. But don't expect everyone to join in and feel the same way you do about that. Not everyone knows FF and there's nothing wrong with that (in fact, I'd seriously question the very fabric of our society if everyone knew what FF was; moreso if they all enjoyed it.) Not everyone who knows FF thinks the concept and mechanics are a good idea, and there's nothing wrong with that either. 'Course, I think we can all be in agreement that nobody likes FF8. ![]() darnit silverlance ff8 is not that bad ::goes back to playing:: All thoughts aside, as I'm not in college and a computer science major (about to graduate so I wont experience this much), if I'm ever playing on my DS and someone sees, I can say with confidence "this if FFVIa!!" they're like that game was awesome, or debate that 7 was the best (hmph). Times like these I love being a CS major. -------------------- Adma <3 CoN |

I explained FF6 to my friend Nancy! Walked her through it very patiently and made jokes and everything. She got a kick out of Celes being able to heal via magic ("wow, that's way better than a stupid potion!") and was disappointed when I advised her to switch out the Greatsword for a Rune Edge ("but it's a great sword.").
Then she left and never played it again. ::shrug:: Another friend of mine loved playing Chrono Trigger through with me but would never play it on her own. It's just a question of whether one's into gaming as a hobby or not. (Also I had never realized how very many mindless random encounters the Golden Age RPGs had until the aforementioned Nancy incident. There are an awful lot and they are boring. It's just a fact of life.) -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Eternal Sleep, Track 1-1: The Blue Planet |

Quote (L. Cully @ 2nd May 2007 21:38) It's just a question of whether one's into gaming as a hobby or not. Well, not just that - it's more of a question of what kind of gaming hobby someone's in or not. ![]() RPGs to some people are boring, and rightfully so. Walking around and being interrupted by battles all the time in which you just pick commands in a menu is not a concept that'll entertain people who are into beating up the computer and doing split-second moves to counter attacks in real-time, or dodging bullets and shooting away when an opening presents itself. It's a slow-paced genre that doesn't get your adrenaline pumping as much as other games most of the time. Unless you're REALLY into your game and end up fighting a half-hour long battle and coming within inches from death. ![]() Personally I love RPGs, but I can see how it wouldn't appeal to everyone. I'm more entertained by shooters (not FPSes, the real shooter genre from the NES/SNES era - Gradius, R-Type, and all that) and fighting games, personally, but when I don't feel like stressing out over being able to block a laser beam some flying moai head shoots at my guy right after I pull off a combo, RPGs do very nicely. It's a big world out there with all sorts of different people. Edit ...though, it's a scientific fact that FF8 really, y'know... is that bad. Undeniable. It's in the bible (but the romans later forcibly removed that passage due to obscure reasons - verifiable facts, all of them!) Also this one morning, I saw "F F 8" in my alphabits cereal and had a terrible day; this sort of proof counts as a scientific methodology. Entirely. ![]() This post has been edited by Silverlance on 3rd May 2007 02:53 -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Right here with you, bro. My closest friends all despise the NES, SNES, and the classics RPG games because "teh graphix sux!" or because turn-based games are "terrible". It's just a rare find these days to find common people who can appreciate the old-school games. There's such a huge craze with the XB360 and PS3 and Wii that people just think everything else is terrible. Some of my friends even say that the GCN is a terrible system because it can't compete to the Wii.
It's kind of frustrating because I just set up my NES and SNES recently (like a month or two ago) and I have been playing some of the classics a LOT. Super C for NES, SoM for SNES, the old Zelda/Link games for NES, LTTP for SNES, Kirby Superstar for SNES etc. but I have nobody to talk to about them. Part of the fun of being amazing at video games is bragging about it, but nobody in school can appreciate it. "Hey I beat Super C without losing a life!" "lolz you ar teh n00b! i ran over sumone wiht teh tank in halo! play a real gaem prz!" Bah. I have even resorting to talking to RuneLancer about the classic games. Bad news, lemme tell you. The moral of this story, though, is to not let it bother you. [arbitrary_view] You have the correct taste in video games and those other people are wrong. Instead of getting upset, you should pity the inferiority of the lesser beings and try to enlighten them.[/arbitrary_view] -------------------- Is PJ |

Quote (Caesar @ 2nd May 2007 22:59) Bah. I have even resorting to talking to RuneLancer... Oh, God. I can't imagine anything more painful. ![]() Anywho... Around here, not a lot of people played the old FF's, however this is true for most areas. As far as my area goes, we have a larger small amount of people than average, I'd say. I know a couple of people, and have actually held discussions. When I think about it, it's pretty tolerant up here. I actually remember talking about D&D with kids on the baseball team. We're pretty liberal here in suburbia. My generation of gamers is very appreciative of the SNES gen. However, the up and coming generation of the PSX/64 era seem to be riddled with stupid, and, consequently, believe graphics make the game. Of course, like all areas, there are some real troglodytes around here, who enjoy exploiting and pointing out any difference somebody might have from their little quasihomoerotic/insecure niche. (and I'm not even using "homoerotic" as an insult. If you saw the way these guys acted... ![]() Let's just say, Final Fantasy in general wasn't too popular with them, much less the old-school games. Fortunately, problems with chavs of this caliber can be solved with a shiv and a dark alley located somewhere on their nightly walk home. ![]() Overall though, the community is pretty accepting around here. I'm somewhat fortunate in that respect. Most of the people I have met that have played the old Final Fantasies around here are... seedy... to say the least. Turns out the old-school RPG's have a cult following in the drug community. I don't know how secretive that is though. At least not to someone with a close ear to the internet. alphabits don't have numbers!... i don't think so anyways.
bong Maybe if CT or Secret of Mana come out for gameboy, the more action looking sequences in those games will be tolerated better by these PSX/64 graphics coughnoobscough -------------------- Adma <3 CoN |
