Leaping on Behemoths?

In the WOR I have encoutered Behemoth and King Behemoth on the Veldt. Trying to gain new rages, I leapt on a Behemoth (or King, dont remember which, but this occurs for both). When Gau returned, I hadnt gained anything from either. Is this a glitch in the GBA version? I checked walkthroughs for FF3 on SNES and FFVI for PS1. Both of them said Behemoth's rage was worth learning, but I just cant seem to figure out how to get it...
