I've been thinking recently that I should start playing some of the older Final Fantasies and i'd like to know what one should I play first?. I'll list the FF games i've played:

VI
VII
VIII
IX
X
X-2
XII
Tactics Advance

Edit
Added X-2 to the list.

Well, these are the ones you're missing so far:

FFI
FFII
FFIII
FFIV
FFV
FF Mystic Quest
FF Legend (FF Gaiden)
FF Legend 2
FF Legend 3
FF Adventure (Seiken Densetsu/Holy Sword Legend)
FF Tactics

If you're into tactical stuff (read: if you enjoyed FFTA), then go to Tactics.

If you like character building, I think Tactics, FFIII, FFV, and maybe the Legends are nice.

If you don't mind gameplay being a little slow (although you can always use a Turbo button), go for either FFI or FFIII. If you do FFI, CoN has a nice handy guide for you to use; if you do FFIII, I can try to help you find a nice database if you want one.

If you'd prefer something closer to what you've been playing, I'd recommend you try FFIV or FFV next. Go for FFIV if you're more into story; go for FFV if you're more into gameplay. (I really enjoyed the story of FFV much more than the story of FFIV, but most people feel the other way around about this.)

And Mystic Quest sucks unless you want to kill time.

edit: I included FFVI by mistake.

Play Tactics, IV, V, and maybe I and III. The rest are optional, and the FF Legend games aren't even real FF games. Tactics and IV are really the only must-plays among the ones you haven't tried yet, though.

You've gotten FFX out of the way on the play list. I hope you've beaten it, because the ending truly makes the game memorable.

Next on your list, I'd suggest Tactics. One of the best games, let alone FF games, ever made IMO.

I'm probably the only person here to advocate playing FFII as soon as possible.

I'll second SilverMaduin: FFII is an awesome game. Sadly, I've yet to beat it, but it sure as heck is on my "to-do" list. Beside FFII, I'd also say FFT, which is my favorite game of all time.

if you want my advice, start from the beginning... go from FF1 to FFV.... start with the main series, then go for mystic quest and tactics after that..... play um, beat um, just for the fact of being able to say that you have done it....

FFIV is decent, I found it went a little too fast and not very much happened, though. I really love FFV and I think it is definitely one worth trying.

I kinda agree with what King Eddy said about FFIV--somewhat deus-ex-machina-ish at times. FFV's plot flows more smoothly in my opinion, but has fewer plot twists. If you want a satisfying albeit not very innovative story, I'd recommend FFV, and that's also why I like it more.

As for Tactics, I've heard that it's significantly more complex than FFTA--and I'm not even counting the plot here, which is like several orders of magnitude more compex than that of FFTA. If you like the tactical gameplay though, go straight for it--it seems like a quite fun game from the little bit of it that I've played.

Any Final Fantasy game is fine as long as it doesn't go beyond IX, and avoid VIII at all costs.

I'd recommend you to play FFV, FFVI, FFIII, or FFT. Get FFV if you like straight-forward job systems in ATB gameplay, FFVI for its great characters and plot (although somewhat disappointing espers system), FFIII for it's simplistic interchangable job system, or FFT if you like war plots with fights that last more than 6 mins.
