If a Final Fantasy Tactics remake wasn't enough to make you want a Sony PSP, maybe a Castlevania compilation will do the trick.
Konami is planning a special remake of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, originally for the Japanese counterpart of the Turbo-Grafx16, and never before released for English-speaking audiences. The remake will feature updated 3D graphics but retain the original's 2D gameplay. Unlike the Castlevania Chronicles release for the PlayStation, the original version of the game isn't in the spotlight, but it can be unlocked through completion of the remake. And if that's not enough, Konami is including a second unlockable game: the best Castlevania game ever, Symphony of the Night. This will be the same version of SotN that was made available for the X-Box Live download service, which had a few graphical improvements and other slight adjustments from the original release. They seem to be putting an awful lot of things to intrest a large amount of people on a supposedly sinking ship. I wonder why. Either all's not well in DSville after all, or Sony have still got a lot in the backhanders kitty.
I bet the latter's more likely. Well, damn. If this bad boy gets a US release, then I'm going to have to get me one of those PSPs that nobody's talking about.

I am now even more glad that I have a PSP. I wonder if versions of the first 4 will make it to PSP as well? I certainly hope so.

This is hot.
I dunno, I've always liked gobbling up ports. ;D Even better if it's a game that was never released where I live! -------------------- |

This is seriously making me reconsider a system that I'd pretty much written off as one I would never buy.
Seriously. They could even up the ante a bit further by including the third game in the Drac X story arc, that being Drac X Vampire's Kiss (the one originally for SNES). Not worth as much as the other two, but still decent. And a pretty extreme challenge. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Wow, this better come out in the UK. I don't care if they are re-releases I haven't had much of a chance to play a lot of these games and if they're on the PSP then that is my best opportunity. I played one Castlevania. It was in fact Symphony of the night, and it was a lot of fun, so bring on the others! Keep bringing us the classics Sony.
New games would be nice too of course but games like this and FFTactics will work so well on a handheld like the PSP, it's something nobody should pass up. It's region-free for games, but not region-free for UMD movies. So even if it ends up not leaving Japan, any of us could import it without any trouble, even if having no English option would be lame. -------------------- |

Cheers Elena! I forgot about that useful fact. This is something I would have to do for FFTactics if it doesn't come out here. But would they really be silly enough not to release these games here? Mmm, possibly.

Well, note that Rondo of Blood has so far been a Japan-only release. Either Konami/IGA doesn't notice the enormous fan-demand for the game outside Japan, or they'll release it to at least the States, if not elsewhere as well.
In other words, making it a Japan-only release is kinda stupid. And with how successful Squenix has been, in general and with Tactics in particular, once again, a Japan-only release is kinda stupid. Oh, and Symphony is an extremely highly acclaimed game. Sticking that onto something I really don't like and have no use for--FF7 fanservice--might even make ME buy it. I've heard they're redoing the script and voice acting for Symphony...so I just hope that they actually produce something better, that can overcome the charm that hilarious original has accumulated over the years. But the original will still be classic. WHAT IS A POST?! A MISERABLE LITTLE PILE OF TYPING NOISES! With the PS3 coming out in a month and a half I've no reason to buy this thing now. It's a shame because I was really close! I remember playing one of the really old-school Castlevanias but never really getting into it like Street Fighter or Streets of Rage... or Road Rage. If it's as good as everyone makes it out to be then I'd have bought it. Still, at least this gives more gratification to those who did shell out for a PSP.

I'm going to briefly revive this topic, as the release date for this baby is around a month away. Also, for the past three days I've been the proud owner of a new-model PSP, and it's *awesome*.
Here's the skinny: The new version of Rondo of Blood is a remarkably accurate remake. All of the stages and alternate stages are as they were, but with new visuals rebuilt from the ground-up, remixed audio, and several more cutscenes. There is also a little more exposition between each stage, which supposedly helps making a few of the alternate paths easier to find. The character and enemy designs, which were anime-style in the original Chi no Rondo, have been reimagined by Ayami Kojima, the character designer for Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Lament of Innocence, and Curse of Darkness. The cutscenes are supposedly excellent. Here's the opening cinematic and here's the prologue's opening cutscene and a brief gameplay montage. There are several cutscenes in between certain levels, and an entrance cutscene for every boss. Despite the newschool visuals, the game retains its oldschool difficulty. While not as brutal as the likes of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse or Castlevania: Bloodlines, this game is very difficult. Richter has more moves than most of the older Castlevania protagonists, but he is still a little sluggish, particularly in the air. Hey, at least it isn't the SNES Dracula X. And speaking of the SNES Dracula X, there's a rumor that it's also stuck in this bundle as a third unlockable game. After beating the newly-remade Rondo of Blood, you unlock the original Rondo of Blood (essentially the same game with the older visuals and sound) as well as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. This new version of SotN has revised and edited dialogue, new voice work, and features the new areas found in the Sega Saturn version. Both Richter and Maria are unlockable playable characters, but Maria's sprites and movelist have been completely remade for this new update of SotN. Having those two is extra value enough, but SNES DX? That's just icing on the cake. So that's all I've managed to pull together from random forum-checking, interview-reading, and news-mongering. Now we just have to wait for October 23rd.... This post has been edited by laszlow on 15th September 2007 17:15 -------------------- |

I will have to buy a PSP so I can get new Ayami Kojima art. I mean, new Michiru Yamane music. I mean, the new Castlevania.

The coolest thing is that there has been multiple versions of each of the castlevania games, (SoTN had a version without secret areas and maria, and one with), and Rondo of blood gets a cool revamp! Which means the coolest versions has been picked... awesomeness !

I already have SotN on my PSP, thanks to the glories of custom firmware. This other game sounds way too difficult for me. I suck at hard games, and I end up getting frustrated and quitting when the learning curve is just too high. But it's nice that Castlevania is getting another release.
