okay, I want to take a second to say something not completely chocobo related. If any of you are horseracing fans, then you know that Barbaro, winner of the Derby, was racing in the Preakness yesterday and broke his leg. He is now, at the time I am posting this, in the middle of surgery. his injuries are very bad - ordinarily he would have been put to sleep right on the track. If the vets at the University of Pennsylvania can save his leg, he will live the rest of his life as a stud, but right now its not looking good for him. As soon as they announce his condition after the surgery I will update this posting.

Until then everyone hope for the best.

____________

okay, Barbaro's surgery is over, and as long as he doesn't get himself worked up when his anesthesia wears off, he looks like he's going to be okay

I hope he's okay, I don't like seeing animals die, but they really need to stop reporting about it every five minutes on Sportscenter. It's a horse, it doesn't care whether you send it "Get Well Soon" cards, people. It just wants to get sent out in a field to breed.

My thought exactly. It's a shame and I hope it makes it but... Either it lives or it doesn't - bother us with it once you know which it'll be, TV. We already know his leg is dangling by a strip of flesh and whatnot.

I was amazed at the coverage that this got on the news. The updates were ridiculous. Not news worthy, IMO. Tell us the end result.... and even then 99% of us won't even remember a month from now.

Tell me about it. I wake up this morning to hear the new LATE BREAKING NEWS and it's showing a picture of Barbaro's gauze-bandaged leg and analyzing it or somesuch. Talk about a day with nothing to talk about (second news story: tornado over water).

But, I really feel for the horse. Obviously, if it can't be used for the purpose its intended, keeping it around is only throwing money down the drain. Still, I'd hate to see it get put down when it's obviously still alive (one month 'til we know if infections'll get to it, etc.). It won't be able to race, but putting down the Derby's champion because of that doesn't seem to be the best alternative, even if it can't be a racehorse any longer.

Taking him down to the glue factory is equally undesirable. =/

From what I've heard, even if the horse survives, there's doubt he'll be able to do much of anything, like breed, cuz that ankle/leg/whicheverpartbroke will continue to be fragile.

And of course the horse deserves a chance to live. Even if he can't race, breed, or do anything profitable, well, most people don't exactly make a profit off the average household pet, anyway (granted, horses are more expensive to maintain than lil Spot, I reckon).

If a horse can't breed, work, race, or even be used as companionship..... If it has no purpose or usefulness at all..... I say give it to the glue factory.

Before I hear the retorts of "what about Terry Shiavo" or "what about comatose patients in hospitals", keep one thing in mind: the life of a human is worth FAR more than that of an animal.

I never post on the forums, but come on... FAR more important? I don't agree with euthanizing a horse because it can't race anymore (its like putting Ali down when he became crippled by his disease), but shouldn't you respect all life, no matter if it is a highly intelligible form or not? Sure, they are creatures of instinct, but is their life still not justifiable?

Being able to process complex thoughts and emotions, and expressing those abstracts into words or gestures do show how far separated we are from animals. But do you mean to tell me that they don't have feelings (pain, excitement, anger)? I mean if we were talking about destroying a huge rock, I wouldn't mind. Its a rock. An inanimate object. But this is a horse who could still walk around. Also, I'm sure they could do some sort of artificial insemination if they're that dedicated to making him into a stud. But just because he can't really contribute and becomes a "burden", as you make it sound, doesn't mean he should be put down.

Playing God has gotten out of hand.

Can we keep this about the horse now please?

PS: this isn't very elaborate, this is why I hate posting on forums ohmy.gif

Meh... even our newspaper covers it now. And I live in Canada - CANADA for cryin' out loud. wink.gif

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. The little kid who drowned in his pool last week didn't get even half the coverage some dumb race horse is getting in our newspaper. We're talking about a human life here, a kid even.

I say just shoot it and move on.

(Oh yeah... that's totally immoral... uh...) ..shoot it up with painkillers, I mean. Haha... biggrin.gif

Seriously, the horse broke its leg, it isn't going to run ever again, end of story. Can we go back to covering old bums fighting over a wedge of cheese in a park?

Edit: Typo.

I say that, at the very least, the horse can still provide some companionship. His leg's broken, he ain't in a coma.

Comatose people can be companions, hell, my best friend growing up was my stuffed Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiasi doll. Terri Schaivo at least made noises. And regarding the ethics of the horse and everything, yea, it's a shame it broke it's leg. I broke my leg when I was 7, so I can empathize. The main difference between horses and humans is this:

Horses cant use crutches! Now before you call this stupid, it's the difference between us and every other creature on this planet. We (being humans) have incredible intelligence compared to, say, a honey badger. We get injured and our smarts come up with a way to make us better, we can think of ways to keep living through an injury now seen as routine. Horses are stupider (haha) than us, and it should think of a horse crutch for itself to use but it cant and it should die very slowly on national television. Joking. It shouldn't be killed for being injured while racing for cash money prizes in order to make elderly capitalist burgoise garbage more wealthy, just dont throw that crap on my idiot box when I'm trying to watch my stories. Daddy needs to watch his stories.

Well, Barbaro was put down yesterday after a very long battle with infections and surgery recovery.

Part of me thinks, hey, the owners had the money, and they liked the horse and wanted to keep it alive, so why not spend a massive amount to save it? But then another part of me thinks of all the good that money could have done for hungry families or underpriveledged children.

Either way, rest in Alpo cans and Elmers bottles, Barbaro.

Enough with the dogfood and glue thing. I'm sure Barbaro will either be cremated or buried. You don't send a pet to a glue factory.

Imagine, if you will, the advertising though......

Your dog could be eating a Champion!!! Most expensive Alpo in history, man.

Or this... Your kindergardener could be making that thanksgiving turkey from a cutout outline of their hand with Championship caliber glue!!!

Ok, sorry for those. Honestly though, I've been disgusted by the shower of attention and money and outpouring from the public over this horse. It's just a horse! In any event, I'm glad that this will all die down now.

Until the owners give Barbaro his state funeral, I suppose.

Ho hum. Our dog died two-three years ago and nobody made a fuss over it. Well, my mother did, but y'know... Ah yes, but our dog wasn't a champion zomg now THAT'd have been big news.

No, seriously, I don't care about this stupid horse. I didn't before, I don't now, and I'm surprised they STILL talk about this stuff. So it's a sad story, it sucks for the owner (but not the horse - I mean heck he's dead, what's he care about anymore? wink.gif ) but whatever. We have people in Iraq getting blown up by suicide bombers, but this is different.

We're talking about a champion! smile.gif

Well, I'm glad that's over with. Maybe we can start worrying about real losses, like human lives and such... Call me insensitive but I don't think it's right to make such a fuss over a racing horse when human beings get less than a paragraph at the back of the newspaper when they die in far worse situations. :/

I'm not sure if that was sarcastic or not, but they actually are trying to bury him at Churchill Downs (the site of the Kentucky Derby.)

http://sports.yahoo.com/rah/news;_ylt=AunS...ov=ap&type=lgns

Hopefully they have a nice, quiet service and we never have to hear about the story again.

This isn't being very considerate to the horse's family you know, talking like this...
Seems like a waste of good meat to just bury the horse, they should send the remains to France, I'm sure the owners could do with the extra cash. Can you imagine the menu?

Normal horse leg with veg' - 15 Euros
Famous Racing horse leg with veg' - 200 Euros

Seriously...who cares about a GD horse? I mean honestly?

Do you people realize that between the 19 and 25th of January 38 soldiers and marines were killed in Iraq along with an additional 163 wounded in action?

Do you know the overall death total in Iraq is 3,050 (as of 25 Jan) and the Wounded in Action total is 23,114?

A horse?

Honestly

Holy Munchkins, that's insane!
Did this horse do amazing things that I don't know about? Like saving orphans from burning factories and finding cures for deadly forms of cancer?
I must have missed something here.
Well, I hope this race horse finally gets to rest now.

Naw, it's just a champion racer. Then again, you don't see people making a big fuss over broken racecars. I don't get this. :S

That totally made my day right there. Thank you for that.

It always pisses me off seeing the attention celebrities get at all. So they're prettier than me. And they have acting, or singing, or whatever talent. And some of them don't even have talent.
