![]() Yeah. Yeah, yeah yeah. This is something they should've done awhile ago, and I guess, technically, everywhere else in the world has already. ![]() America is the last to get it... but... yeah! I just recently got my DS, but I'm still just as stoked as anybody else, because there is WiFi at one of my jobs, and we're not allowed to use the computers at work to surf the internet (i'm doing it right now anyway, so whatev...), but now I'll have a legitimate loophole. Also awesome about it is that the browser is being made by Opera, the same company that made the Wii browser, so not only do that have experience with nintendo system functionality, but they also have experience with the touch-activated typing/selection, not just with wii, but it seems at a quick glance at their website that they have experience with mobile phones as well. It just seemed a natural progression in my mind. WiFi functionality, to web browsing. I wonder how many people have been saying this since they got their DSses when they came out? Of course, Opera.com was one of my sources, but a quick google search found me the best source of information ![]() Comments? Concerns? What's the point? I can't stand surfing the 'net on anything but my computer monitor. It's too hard to see what's going on otherwise, and no typing interface will ever beat a keyboard.

I think for me it's more about the abuse of power.
It's gonna be me rubbing it in the faces of everyone generous enough/dumb enough to let me snipe their WiFi saying, "Thanks for letting me check CoN from my car at the red light!" I'm all about convenience, and the convenience of surfing the net ANYWHERE beats out the inconvenience of straining my eyes and poking the screen to do it. ![]() And there is about a 99% chance I will check my email in a reasonable time frame now as well. There was talk of the java and such being up to date, and if video is able to be streamed, YouTube at my fingertips is rediculous scary. How many stupid things can you watch at any time? AN INFINITE AMOUNT! ![]() And the city I live in is all about lower middle class and upper middle class. Lower middle class is glad enough to have WiFi they don't lock it, and Upper middle class had somebody (probably from lower middle class) hook up their WiFi for them, so that's not usually locked either. I can say that in that confidence because I fall into that lower middle class category, and the people I know are completely this way. Point is, everyone's got it, and nobody stops it. Even the McDonalds here have DS compatable WiFi. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Here's the big question: standards compliant?
![]() Seems like consoles and handhelds are turning into game-oriented computers with each new passing generation. I kind of miss the old days when your keys only opened doors instead of also allowing you to email people and listen to the news, or when the most advanced thing wristwatches did was double as calculators. But oh well, times 'a changing. Really, though, I wonder just how much their browser supports. The screen's rather small so it's got to be awkward as heck, but coming from someone who used to use Lynx regularly, that means very little. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Quote (Silverlance @ 18th May 2007 01:09) Here's the big question: standards compliant? ![]() It's Opera; they're more adherent to standards than Firefox. Speaking as a former Opera user, that kind of dedication to standards have generally broken more websites than not. *sigh* Don't take my word for it. Try it yourself. That's right... on my DS! It's pretty much awesome for CoN, but I have to give it a full field test still. I edit in updates. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Dude, that's awesome! I really have to get me one of them. But I do agree with SilverLance, I mean, it seems as if when you go out to buy a game system they no longer are just games, they're internet, tv, chat messaging, giant things that aren't even recognizable as games anymore... But I'll still get one

Okay, so there are some bugs that REALLY need to be worked out. I was kinda hoping they'd port the Wii browser, but they built this from the ground up it seems.
There is no flash compatability ![]() There is no audio or video compatability ![]() Javascript compatability is there, but it really needs an update... it's not properly sorting my email like i'd like it to. But the caves work splendedly! And much like a PDA, the handwriting feature is tons of useful once you figure out what it wants for letters. my only problem right now is it's recognition of my lowercase t. I do think I can type a scotsche faster if it can understand what I'm trying to write. It seems to work pretty well at work too! -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Quote (CrzyMonk3y @ 8th June 2007 14:28) Just as i thought it sucks right? But keep in mind... for handheld video games, this is first generation we're talking about. If the PSP had more interface than a D-pad, joyknob, and some buttons, this might work really well. The DS happened to be the most compliant with the touch screen functionality. The entire idea has nowhere to go but up. It came with a memory expansion pak that fits in the GBA slot (and fits flush with the lite. You have to buy the browser online if you want it to fit a regular DS, but that's available too.), with the memory expansion, and the fact that it starts on it's own start page, I'd say there's still a possiblity of upgrading the software as they redevelop it. I got through the glitches on my yahoo mail, and it works really well for CoN. Saying that CoN is about the most social I get outside of work, accessing that on the go is very handy for me (no pun intended) ![]() The moral of the story for the pessimistic: Yes, it sucks. But it's going to suck less over time. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH!
