...and would like to know what you guys think are the best RPGs for it. I know there are a lot out there and that's the reason why I'm getting it, the newer GC games don't interest me anymore. And please don't try to talk me out of it, my mom has already bought it and it's going to be my birthday present.

Anyway, there are two games that I really want to try. First, I want to rent Fullmetal Alchemist 2 because I'm obsessed with that series. Secondly, I'm going to buy Tales of the Abyss because I'm an avid Tales series fan.

I'd love to hear some PS2 veteran's input.

Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Legendia are both solid, but most people seem to like Symphonia better (my favorite Tales games are Phantasia and Eternia), Final Fantasy X's good but X-2 isn't, Final Fantasy XII might be my favorite since VII and Tactics, Disgaea 1 and 2 are *very* fun strategy-RPGs, Dragon Quest VIII is awesomely oldschool to the extreme, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is very good, Xenosaga I is great but II isn't, Shadow Hearts 2 is great but 1 isn't, and Rogue Galaxy is unbelievably good, but I've only owned the game for around 24 hours, so it's only a first impression.

Also definitely check out any Playstation RPGs you can find, if you don't own a PS1 already. I don't even know where to begin to make recommendations on that one.... Oh wait, yeah I do: FF Tactics.

Hope this helps.

There are remakes of older Final Fantasy games already released for the PlayStation. FF 1 and 2 have been compiled into FF Origins, FF4 and Chrono Trigger have been released together as FF Chronicles, and FF5 and FF6 are rereleases in FF Anthology.

They are really great games, but lack some quality from the originals. Final Fantasy VII is also pretty popular, you might like that one if you are interested in machines and such. I wouldn't recommend FF8. FF9 is really good if you are very nostalgic about the older Final Fantasies.

I do own a PSX and I have FFIX and Breath of Fire 3 and 4. I've also played FFVII and it's a great game. I'm mostly asking about PS2 games because I already know about a lot of the PSX games.

OK, then. The ten or so games I recommended are all good to excellent RPGs. Right now I'm actually playing Tales of the Abyss and Rogue Galaxy, and I heartily recommend both.

Atelier Iris, Phantom Brave, Arc The Lad Twilight of the Spirits...(I think that's the title) Suikoden Tactics....Stay away from any SaGa games...unless you enjoy those piles of schlock. Star Ocean TToT is great and FFX and XII are hawtsome.

Bamf!

Obviously, whenever you can get Final Fantasy XII.

Like stated above, Dragon Quest VIII for old school reasons.

Star Ocean: Till' the End of Time

and if you are lucky, go get Brave Fencer Musashi 1 for the psONE, that's an awesome game.

Xenogears, for psONE.

Wild ARMs 3 is a great western-themed RPG and first-timers'll find it longer than the average ones. Phantom Brave gives a nice twist to tactical RPGs, using radius movement/ranges instead of grid squares, as well as a few other twists to unit management. Radiata Stories is a nice split-path RPG with 100+ characters to round up, and it does it better than Chrono Cross ('though I love my baby CC heart.gif). Grandia II is incredibly funny, with great scripting and a neat-o battle system (half ATB, half real-time) -- some great one-liners in this bunch, although it's a bit short at under forty hours.

I also second Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits. It's cheesy at times, but since it shows both sides of good/evil and tackles racism a bit, it's definitely a rare gem. Plus, it's a great installment in the series, whereas End of Darkness should be avoided -- unless it's given to you free.

There's not many more RPGs to say! I think they're all pretty much covered now. Instead I'll say that you'll want more than just RPGs on your console, otherwise you'll become sick of the genre. Here's a few I think you should consider to balance your collection:

Resident Evil 4 - has good links to the reasons why you might like RPGs; survival, Spanish villagers, custom stuff, overzealous bosses. You might just love it.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence - not too much in common with RPGs, but a healthy "survival feel" that some RPGs present. And again, overzealous bosses. Also lots of funny secret stuff that RPGs usually have, like putting your clock a few years forward on your console causes The End to die of old age!

Deus Ex - not the best PS2 port but it didn't lose any of its appeal. It's basically a modern day-future FPS RPG. Oh, and one of the best games ever made. I got mine for £5 so it didn't exactly break the bank either.

Okami - it has that "Princess Mononoke" thing going for it. Played it briefly, a bit like Zelda or something. Check it out. Some of the best PS2 visuals I've seen.

Ico - must be cheap now. Just such an excellent game. No point in not buying it, I've seen it for less than a bottle of milk!

Devil May Cry (1) - again, will probably cost you a pint of milk. Similar to an RPG in the way that you can level-up Dante and chose a particular area in which to do so. Lots of great bosses as well.

Onimusha 1,2 and 3 - all great games, all have RPG appeal in them. You can level-up, fight optional bosses, go with what tactics suit you, and it takes place in the general Tactics era so you won't be too far away from home. Oni 1 is budgie cheap now.

In fact, after writing this, I'm very tempted to rush into town now with £20 and buy half the games on this list happy.gif

PS1: Legend of Dragoon is very addictable.
Ok... I'll say it... FFVIII. Form your own opinion, don't let the haters make you hate. If you already don't like it, cool. But definitely give it a shot first.

Xenogears

Yeah Xenogears! I was friggin rockin the Xenogears back in the day!

PS2:
FFX is good.
IF AND ONLY IF you liked FFX and FFV, think about FFX-2. X-2 is my superclose second to FFV, but I like jobs.

I sort of consider this an RPG, but it's probably closer to an adventure game, but the Dark Cloud series is cool.

Get either vice city or san andreas for a PS2. Even if you don't play it that often, there's just something about the desensitization to blood and violence that makes your ps2 all warm inside (or maybe that's just electricity blink.gif ).

If you are a music fan at all... 4 more words:

Frequency.
Amplitude.
Guitar Hero.

Frequency and amplitude don't require a fancy controller, but do be sure that your buttons work good-like. Amplitude is the sequel to Frequency, so it's a little better done, but both are finger snappin'-tastic.

Now that I've effectively butchered the english language repeatedly, I should let someone else make reccomendations. You may like RPGs, but the PS2 really is a well rounded machine. Don't limit yourself. thumbup.gif

Get Guitar Hero II and FFXII
FFXII smacks X against the wall. And If you like the original FFtactics you'll love FFXII even more.

FFXII has rekindled my faith in Square

and believe it or not you can probably get it used, I did.

Just several PS2 RPGs I'd recommend:

-Tales of the Abyss (has some ugly load times, but still great Tales fun)
-Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (It's only $20 so even if you end up hating it at least you only payed $20)
-Dragon Quest VIII (oldschool awesome fun)
-Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (and the first, of course, but I haven't played that one)
-Final Fantasy X (I found it pretty enjoyable)
-Final Fantasy XII (a bit slow, but still enjoyable)
-Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (has an unforgiving difficulty curve, and you may want to play the original to enjoy it completely...but still, not a bad addition to your collection)
-Grandia III (playtime, not storytime. Be warned)

At first I didn't like the game I'm about to mention, but this is known as the first PS2 blunder...

The Bouncer

I reccomend renting it, if it's out there in any rental store, I doub it. I still can believe they sell this game for $40+ in the local Game Stop, I thnk they forgot they have that game, and so never have dRopped the price!

edit: sorry there, forgot it was only RPG's, nonetheless, good games.

Oh, so now we're allowed to nominate non-RPGs?

Go for the Prince of Persia trilogy, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry 1 and 3 (for the love of God not 2) God of War, Okami, Guitar Hero, Katamari Damacy, Dark Cloud 2, Mega Man Anniversary Collection, Mega Man X Collection, and Mega Man X8. I'm aware that you have a Gamecube already, and with that you can handle all of the PoP games as well as both MM collections that way.

But yeah, all things considered, my favorite PS2 games are probably Disgaea, Devil May Cry 3, the first Prince of Persia, and Rogue Galaxy, which is traveling up my list of favorite games remarkably quikly.

Sorry I think I opened that floodgate. blush.gif I tried to suggest games in other genres that have similarities to RPGs but that wasn't exactly what this was about.

As an update on before: I'm playing Fahrenheit at the moment. If you can survive the general depression themes, it's actually quite an interesting and unique game. I think it was released as "Indigo Prophecy" in the US or that's just Gamespot doing their job well wink.gif.

Oh yeah, get The Bouncer.

Edit: I thought that would come across sarcastic in its own paragraph... so much for that. To elaborate, it made me and a friend laugh, so hopefully it'll do the same for you.

Or don't. It was pretty cool-looking and lame-playing back in 2001, and I imagine that it hasn't aged well either. If you want a good beat 'em up for the PS2, try God Hand.
