Alright homies, I'm making one which revolves around Baram and Clyde. I'll be using RPG Maker 2003 (I don't know how to code, and this is pretty user friendly. I've got a couple years of experience and decided one day to just do it as it's something I've always wanted to to do), and will be incorporating a few custom scripts. (Party change system, Steal system, Possible Blitz-like system)
I'll have pics posted here within the week. Yes, I know most fan games completely suck but I also know I'm gonna change some minds with this one. I don't think just because it's a fan made prequel it is destined to suck, i think you get out what you put in. I'm also going to need feed back from pics, and I'll be asking a couple questions. I don't want to ask them now as I want people to see some screenshots first. You can expect : I plan to remap the entire world of balance. The game will take place 12-10 years before FF6, and so everyone will of course be ten to twelve years younger. None of the main FF6 cast will play too large a role. They might join the party for a small period of time but only as support characters, think Banon in FF6 style. Main characters will include Baram, Clyde, a Moogle, Siegfried, and I'm taking suggestions on who else people would actually want to play as. Character portraits will look extremely pixelated and ugly as they are just the face of the sprite blown up. I can't do Amano style portraits and so far I'm flying solo. I'm only using FF6 enemies and sprites. For the battling I've prepared the main characters sprite sheets. Seeing as how magic wasn't wide spread the game will have a Skill Point system. There will be a thieving guild, as well as a few other mini games. I plan to follow the events of FF6 to a tee. I'm gonna attempt at a night and day system. Much like FF6, the game will be very open-ended, with lots of side quests to tie the story together. Hopefully I'll have a 30-45 minute demo out within two months. Looks like you got some work to do. I think maybe that 'duncan' should be a character, you did want a blitz skill didn't you?.

No offense, man, but RPGmaker games as a general rule kind of suck. Especially if they're trying to associate with another game of a much higher calibur than RPGmaker can actually achieve.

True, there have been many ambitious projects that fell flat on their faces due to poor commitment to it, but the rpg maker community is enormous and several amazing games have been made using it. I think you should try to tie in Locke and his dead girlfriend in, like, tie in the scene where the thing that gets here dead happens, (sorry a little light of memory.) If you've played then you'll know what I'm talking about... Locke is my favorite character, and would definately want to see him in this...

I've got a couple plans for Locke, but he's only 13, and I still need to research the time line a bit. For instance, how old was Locke when that girlfriend thing happened? How old were Edgar and Sabin when their troubles began... I might have to take some educated guess if there's no concrete answers.
Duncan might work as a character, but what kind of weapons would he use? I've already got claws on Baram. |

Whats good all. I posted here like last week about my prequel. It's still in it's very early stages but I do have a couple of screens on what you can expect. These are not part of the final product and I still have a lot to do.

I'm glad that you're considering changing the font. The one pictured doesn't work too well. Might I suggest a more "blocky" type of lettering?

This is really neat. Is this a hack, or something else? Some of the formats seem a little different.

Duncan and Bannon should both be in it, I think. Although you'd have to make them look a little more different than they are in the original. Who else is old enough to make the cut? If you're worried about a weapon for Duncan, he might be able to use nunchuks or a bo or something. There isn't much in the way of non-magical rods in the FF series, but no specific reason why not. Bannon is some kind of cleric, I'd imagine.
How about Owzer? He might be an interesting side character in a den of thieves. Cid? Strago? Strago's old hunting buddy? -------------------- I hear the jury's still out on...science. That's it, you people have stood in my way long enough! I'm going to clown college! |

All I see is a bunch of screens with graphics exported from Final Fantasy 6 rom. And to be quite honest having almost everyone join Baram and Clyde for no reason doesn't seem to work too well. I think it's best to leave them as duos only.
I agree with ZH. RPG Maker wouldn't be a good idea. I'm sorry but the menu design and the portraits really need more work. If you fixed up the portraits and the menu design, I'd give it a second thought. Anyways, are there gonna be any interesting features in your prequel? Like, a new way to learn skills or something? Because if you just stick to that "learn a skill at exp level up", I won't even lay a finger on that game. It's cool that you're gonna try to implement a steal feature or even a blitz feature. I hope you make it. BTW, Clyde looks stoned in that screenshot. I think you should find a better artist for the portraits. |

*edit* *could someone move this into my Prequel topic? I keep hitting "post new topic" rather than "reply." it throws me off that it's right there while you're already reading through a topic. my mistake*
"it looks like graphics exported from a rom" How else was I supposed to get graphics from FF6? It took me forever to rip those tiles and even longer to make them actually look like the game. I never said that everyone in FF6 was going to be joining Clyde and Baram, but I am going to have a couple playable characters besides them. The game would completely suck if there were two people the entire game. All I said was that the others in the cast would be support characters. I'm not going to have them completely dissappear from the 'universe' because that would be ridiculous. They're just gonna make cameos that maybe show a little bit of how they ended up where they were. For instance, if you went to Doma, Cyan might be training his guards. You could speak to him but he wouldn't end up joining you. If you went to Figaro you'd see Edgar hitting on chicks. "its so cool man keep it up it looks just like ef ef sicks and how are you doing all of that i wanna make a game like that too woow" what? "BTW, Clyde looks stoned in that screenshot. I think you should find a better artist for the portraits. " Maybe he is stoned. The menu design is ripped from FF6, and I figured an attempt at a portrait was better than nothing. I still think Clyde's shot looks pretty sweet as I used a FF6 pallette and took my time with it. I'm still editting it, but I don't think I'm just going to abandon the work I did already. I mean what did you expect him to look like? As I said, I'm changing the font, and that's what pretty much throws off the pictures and the menu design has barely been touched, these are early shots. I'm gonna have Baram start off with a couple of skills, and Clyde just able to steal. Then I'm going to have it so that someone teaches Clyde how to pick pocket eventually, then he's going to be able to find other thieves throughout the game that teach him others. Baram, well dies, so he won't have too many skills, but the story I'm going to set him up with has him being an ex-imperial soldier gone crook because he lost his eye. You're going to have to buy stuff for him like grenades, etc. He basically will have like a throw function but rather than swords stuff like bombs. If I put Duncan in the game, who seems to be requested, he'll work off of a Blitz system. I'll probably leave his sprite as is, as he's probably over 50 and ten years won't make him look too much younger, call it laziness. Steal feature's already been implemented, works perfectly. RPG Maker doesn't really have all these limitations that people liketo make it seem that it has. Any thing that came out really bad on it is because the person didn't put enough effort into it and basically sucks at making games, maybe they just did it for fun. I'm doing it for fun too, but more over, I wish someone else would have done it a long time ago because I think it's a cool idea that I, just me that is, would have liked to play through. If you want to play it at first and don't like it that's fine, as every one is entitled to their own opinion. The only limitation I could find was the lack of Mode, which was the effect of a fake 3d when you were flying the Airship, but if I were to actually port this to RPG Maker XP I could do that, but I'm already well into the game. This looks like a pretty cool idea. As I'm also doing a game in the same universe, I sympathize with your thoughts.
To tell the truth, I honestly don't know anything about RPG maker, nor do I intend to find out, but at the very least, I expect that a person could at least get their idea across, especially with a scripting system. Having already implemented "steal" and having plans for "blitz", I fully expect this script system is decently powerful enough to make a respectable game. Not to mention that in seems that you have the ability to use it as well. That said, I wish you the best in your endeavours! Good luck with your project ^-^v |

I think he's given up. RPG Maker can easily get boring without a doubt in mind. That's why I never released any of my demos yet.

I have not given up. I've almost finished mapping out what I need for the demo, it's just a long process. I also needed to get the Chicago font and that took a while. It's going to take me quite a while but believe me, it's not something I'm going to give up on.

Keep it up, man. It's a very good idea, somtehing a lot of us would like to see. But I would try to make sure it doesn't focus on just Clyde and Baram. There are thirteen other playable characters. This could be a good chance to create a story for Gogo or, more importantly, the Returners. We don't know how they started. You can make up a way. You can possibly say that Clyde had something to do with the creation of them, but at the end, he turns to crime.
I know it is a lot of work, but don't give it up. -------------------- |

Although I'm rather supportive of a FF6 prequel game, a word to the wise: Square-Enix is very infamous for sending out cease-and-desist warnings. In other words, if Square catches you doing this kind of project, even if it is a non-profit fan project, it is well within Square's rights to demand that you stop...and they will. So keep it quiet. XD
Go get them, and get working on the game. -------------------- Nine-hundred ninety-nine billion nine-hundered ninety-nine million nine-hundred ninety-nine thousand nine-hundred ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall... |

Gogo probably won't be making the cut. I think a Mimic command is impossible and I'm not gonna tamper with someone people will completely condemn my game for. A lot of people think Gogo is either Daryl or Ghastra and that would just disappoint them. I've already got an idea for the returners.

Hey man, keep it up, it's looking pretty good. I know that big projects can be pretty daunting, so just take it step by step. I should know because I've had a particular project on my mind since 2001, and only now am I actually getting some things finalized.
What I mean to say is- don't psyche yourself out. Do things little by little. And keep us updated, yes? -------------------- |

I got RPG MAKER XP recently and it still stands by retro-old school gaming except it has amazing graphics. They are so cute and smooth. Couldn't stand 2003 - haven't played VI either but as a friendly suggestion try out XP.
