So I need to make sure I have room for all the special characters, or at least the "big five" that I can get at endgame:

Shara, Ritz, Babus, Cid, and Ezel.

I'm wondering the following:

1. How many characters can I have in my clan, at maximum? (I've tried researching this on GameFAQs but can't seem to find the answer...)
2. If a character joins with an "advanced" character class, and you switch that character out, (I) can you switch that character back in without first satisfying the requirements for attaining that class, (II) can you use that advanced class's skills that you obtain as a selectable A-ability (for your second A-ability slot), and (III) when you do re-satisfy the requirements for normally gaining access to that advanced class, can you then re-access that original advanced class?
3. How do I get over feeling sorry about dismissing characters from my clan?
4. Is it really worth the effort to reserve spaces for those characters?
5. Is it worth my effort to reserve more spaces for those "mid-game specials"? Spoilers ahead:

Lini, Eldena, Quin, Palanza, Little Villi, and Cheney. I already have Lini and Eldena, and I want to figure out how best to use them. Thing is, they always start off on an advanced class, so if I try to give them any more comprehensive a moveset, I have to "irreversibly change" their class first and then build them up slowly.

Okay, let's see...

To answer your first question, 23-25 units is the maximum. I don't remember the exact number, but it's somewhere around there. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Second question, no, you can't switch the character back into the advanced class without meeting the requirements. Yes, you can use the abilities learned in the advanced class when you've switched out. Yes, you can switch back to the advanced class once you meet the requirements. There are some characters, like Babus, who can't switch classes period, though.

Third question, I just tell myself, "They were useless and I'm better off without them" or I go eat some chocolate.

Fourth question, I think it depends on personal taste. I like using them because they come with some great moves and I like switching their jobs around too. I use Ritz in almost every battle.

Fifth question, I like to get them. Cheney because I'm too lazy to make a hunter myself and he knows Ultima Shot, which is very useful. Lini is good with his ultima move, as well as the Bangaa (I can't remember his name). I just leave them in the class that they come in and try to get them to master it. I believe I used Lini right to the end on one file.

I hope my answers are of some help to you.
