First of all, thanks everyone that took part in our little CoNtest. We had around two dozen entries, with some of them surprisingly close and some of them hilariously off-course. In any case, we had two entries in particular that came awfully close to a perfect four for four. So, I hereby offer heartiest of congratulations to...
Zeromus_X and Nytecrawla! Both users guessed two correct and had a third guess that was one of the four fakes in the wrong place. No users had more than two correct answers. Still, in any case, both Nytecrawla and Zeromus_X each earned twenty dollars in the form of an amazon.com gift certificate! If there had been a single winner or if the winning entries had been more correct the prize probably would have been greater, but hey, it's twenty bucks! What's not to love? Also, the staff members of Caves of Narshe would like to thank all of the participants and other interested parties. We had a blast conducting this CoNtest (mostly laughing at the antics of the four fakes) and you can probably expect a new CoNtest sometime next year, but not one like this. Seriously, we'll probably never be able to pull this off ever again now that all of you have experienced it. And yes, I know what you guys want to hear. Who exactly were those four? Which staff members went incognito? Well, we'll let them tell you themselves. Keep an eye on this thread for the final posts of chou, kimono= ![]() -------------------- |

Too bad you guys probably won't be able to do this again, with all of us being on the lookout for fake people and all. It was hilarious! I never expected chou to be karasuman! I can't believe that I actually thought that chou was real for a while there (I came to the conclusion he wasn't later) and I even tried to make him feel better about not being a very good mod. I feel like such an idiot! Way to go guys!

Well, looks like I wouldn't have won anyway. I got lazy about submitting an entry, but who cares. I have a ****ton of schoolwork to take care of anyway.
Here were my guesses: chou: Neal. ZH would have been my next best guess. Both of them gave me the sense that they were probably the best "actors" for this particular character, but I would never have guessed Karasuman. Kimono Kitsune: By a similar logic, I would have first guessed Hikaroo, as she'd probably know enough about anime fankid furries to play one very accurately. Of course, Hikaroo is out, so my next guess would be SSJ_Cloud. Obviously, I was quite wrong. Inque: In retrospect, Inque's (her?) style seems a bit forged--obvious misuse of English conventions (such as capitalization and even plurals--"postes"), but she sometimes uses English very well, and she says she lives in east Michigan, and seems to know a bit much about football to be a foreigner. Then again, nothing says that that couldn't be the case, so my main clue would be knowledge of football--at which point I'd pick either Green Mage: Gotta be a liberal (US usage of the term) and somewhat familiar with the BNP. Of course, "from the UK" would give me Tiddles, Mimic, and Del_S, and possibly Mr Thou for being from nearby in Europe and having an easier job imitating the "natural" mistakes of a non-native English speaker. My guess would be Del_S, which would probably be the only one of the four I'd actually get right. Now, yeah, if I'd participated, I'd have a 50/50 chance of actually sharing the prize with Zeromus_X and Nytecrawla, but, meh. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. chou was my therapy.
In response to the people who asked how I came up with him... Well, the thing that no one seemed to have noticed at all was that chou is the name of a song from Fatal Frame II (the lyrics of which were in chou's signature, so googling would have been pretty effective), and I'm the only person who ever really talked about that series, so... Meh. The other staff said it was too complicated. Sorry. chou was also based on a few different people. Stephen Colbert (listed in chou's profile as an interest; that should have been a big clue that chou was a fake) provided the ludicrous conservative rhetoric, and the general arrogant demeanor and way of arguing were based on two forum members who shall remain nameless (seriously). When I started posting, I made a list of character qualities... Things like "ultra-conservative", "types like a jackass", "thinks he knows everything", "never admits defeat", etc. Seriously, this was a blast. It doesn't surprise me that so many people thought that Neal or Josh would have been behind this, but it does surprise me that no one thought that I was capable of being the thorn in the CoN's collective side. ![]() -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Things like "ultra-conservative", "types like a jackass", "thinks he knows everything", "never admits defeat", etc lol, so then it goes even further than rapid post-sniping and asinine, character-counting pms, does it? your obsession with me is *really* getting out of hand here. i don't know if you're jealous of my intellectual capability, *still* resentful of the fact that i refused to join your fanclub on ff3mb based on the frailty of popular notion (nevermind the fact that i still showed your moody, cliquish, internet-drama ass only the utmost in courtesy and kindness -- do you forgot who sent you, FREE OF CHARGE, his extra copy of either ff3 or ct snes, even as you were embroiled in your crusade against tmgiygas?), or just plain annoyed that you can never seem to attempt to refute any point i make without having your words force-fed right back at you with a strong enough dose of reality that makes even a well-read linguistics major look like a third-world ignoramus, but you're clearly making yourself suffer over something over which you'll never have the slightest bit of control. get over me, and then you can start working on getting over yourself. but really, by "therapy," you must mean the godsend of you being given someone to argue with that you can actually keep up with. how clever of you to have posted gibberish under chou's name for the purpose of giving yourself something to correct! this is the same little girl who called me "showboat?" and re-check your list, darling. ultra-conservative you may be not, but you've got those other three in the bag locked, and given your consistency with posting lunatic fringe-political brain diarrhea like "the us destroying its nuclear weapons stockpile will make the technology so much more less desirable for maniacal despots to pursue!" perhaps you've simply gone and let a less mature fragment of your subconscious run loose for a while. "therapy" indeed. the judgment-passing is noted and uninteresting, but the obsession becomes more disheartening still with each successive episode. |

I love the holiday season.
![]() Kimono=^-^=Kitsune was ... I don't really want to call it therapy because it wasn't stress-relieving. I had to become That Guy. You know, the one who sits in the back of your Japanese lecture with the greasy hair, terrible acne, and the gigantic, half-empty box of pocky who's only taking the course to learn how to translate its Inuyasha manga. I don't understand That Guy, and becoming That Guy was challenging. I didn't ever give KK a gender (I actually decided not to decide for myself even, so there isn't even an answer that I've just hidden from you all) and I never ended a sentence with anything besides an emoticon or an exclamation point. I had it be very self-righteous when it came to morals - the whole sex before marriage thing, as well as pornography - because I gave it a past. It was very friendly and pretty intelligent - one plan was to reveal that it did indeed have a degree from a local college (never explaining what the degree was in, though in the back of my mind I felt like it would've ended up being English) but no job. It was going to reveal that it lived with its parents but was indeed thirty years old, and on its 30th birthday, there was going to be an incredible emo breakdown where it revealed frankly a horrifying past. It would have been pretty intense, but I mistimed it and the birthday came around one of the busiest parts of my semester, so I unfortunately had to abandon the plot. I also worked extremely hard to get it into chat completely untraceable back to me, while I was in chat at the same time. This took me a long time but I finally got it working, and of course by that time most people had left, and it was too long ago for anyone to remember that I was in the chat at the same time to try to throw people off my trail. Well, I personally am a little disappointed in myself for my portrayal of Inque. My original plan was to make Inque a complete oddball that made grammatical errors and illogical conclusions that don't make any sense at all - I succeeded in that department somewhat. Then, I was going to keep up that charade while posting several fanfics. The ones edited by Inque's fictional "Girl Friend" would be somewhat coherent if not very good, and the ones that were all-Inque would be completely awful in every possible way.
I posted my first one and started writing two others, but then work and school started taking up too much time, and things just didn't fall into place. What I really should have done was posted a good deal more (Inque has the lowest postcount of all of the fakes by a longshot) and finished those two fanfics, which were incidentally a sequel to the first one I posted and a truly horrific FF IV story about Edge and Rydia. To be honest, I was surprised that the first one I wrote got any positive press at all. I went and edited it like four times to make it sound less like my writing and more like Inque's. But whatever. I still know I could have done a better job with this (I am the person that sort of ran the CoNtest, after all), and I apologize. -------------------- |
