If you head to this site, you can see an (apparently) accurate comparison of the numbers of sales for the three next-gen consoles (though they should really now be called current-gen now that they're all out (in the states that is)).
I for one am almost entirely unsurprised by the current standings. The Wii has sold almost 4 times as many as the PS3. Doom, doom, doom for sony. Whether the PS3 will catch up when it comes Europe-side in March (if that!) remains to be seen, though I somewhat doubt it. The fact that Sony was celebrating their rapid selling out of consoles in the first release despite there only being about 40,000 in the first batch (that's 8-16 per store) makes me wander if there'ss any hope left. I found that statement astoundingly ignorant. Yes, the Wii has clearly had a stronger two weeks that the PS3 or XBox 360. But you're calling a TKO right now? So soon? Read this; now remind me - who "won" this past generation? The PS3 is perhaps putting Sony at an early disadvantage, but there is still a lot of time left. As I've said over and over and over again, I'm witholding judgment on any silly "console wars" for the next year and a half or so, and right now the only new game system I'm pledging support to is the DS. We don't know as much about Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony's strategies and futures as everyone seems to think we do. -------------------- |

I agree that it's too early to call the race just yet, and that it's way too soon to ring the deathknell for Sony.
But I do believe that Nintendo is poised to take the "lead" this time around, with Sony and Microsoft on their heels. I'm hoping that the fierce competition makes all products that much better in the future. -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

Although it seems to me that Nintendo will have the edge this time around, and that Sony will be and the back of the pack, we shouldn't say anything until we wait longer. I mean, the only games that have come out are the release games. We need to wait for games that haven't even been announced yet, and other factors.

Laszlow: that statement was referencing yet another example of sony silliness, as referenced by this vgcats strip. It's very true that it's still early days yet, but the fact that there are currently 3 Wii owners to every PS3 owner despite the wii being released slightly later still stands.

Obviously that's the case, it's a lot less expensive, which contrary to popular belief is the dominant reason that it's selling better. The fancy new Wii-mote and play style is innovative sure, and definitely playing a large part in terms of sales but just the fact that the Wii is the most affordable of the systems is what's putting it ahead this early in the race. The PS3 has plenty of time to catch up, as they did with the Playstation and the Playstation 2. Also, I'd like to say that with all this going on, has anyone heard anything from Microsoft? Right now, I think the only thing keeping the X-box going is the promise of Halo 3 and Halo Wars. Other than that, the system is flopping hard...or at least it is here. There is really only so much Dead Rising or Call of Duty you can play before the novelty dies out and you turn for something more interesting, only to find that there's really not much, and considering that the system has been out considerably longer than the other two consoles, that's a sure sign of weakness. This console war is nowhere near the point where we can tell what's going on. I think by Christmas time next year we'll have a much, much better idea of what each company is going to bring to the table. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I wasn't saying that your celebration statement was any ignorant, just the fact that you were wondering "if there's any hope left." Of course there is. Sony was in an extremely similar situation with the PS2 nearly six years ago, and look what happened. I'm not saying that Sony is going to win again; I'm going to wait before I make any silly blanket statements. I will say, however, that it is way too early to make any kind of call like that. -------------------- |

I don't think Sony is necessarily going to lose, but I am convinced that this going to be a big win for Nintendo. They might not be the top console, but I really think that they're going to grab enough of the market to consider it a big victory for the company.
The PS2 comparisons were interesting. I guess the price difference is the only truly different factor. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

My dad, having no idea what happens in gaming, asked me which of the three companies he should buy stock into. I said "buy into Sony, I don't think the Wii or the 360 will do quite as well".
I am an idiot, apparently. -------------------- Squenix games completed: FFIII FFIV FFVI FFVII FFIX FFX FF Tactics: Advance 2 Chrono Trigger Dragon Quest 8 Dragon Quest 11 Super Mario RPG |

Just wait for FF13 baby... Sony's got so many secret weapons coming out it's not even funny. Halo 2 is good enough for me, and I'll probably nab the Wii just for Super Smash Brothers Brawl, but otherwise Sony's gonna pull it out in the end.

PS3 still has the majority of the third party support.
Nintendo hasn't had a great track record with publishers since SNES, and all their major support goes to the handhelds. Meanwhile, the Japanese are still extremely weary of X-box, and even then Western companies like Rockstar and Activision work primarily on Sony consoles. Don't get me wrong, I think X-box consoles are much better for online gaming than the Sony consoles... but I don't really game online. I also think Nintendo are a hellova' lot better at handhelds than Sony. I don't think Sony are better than the other systems, but for their great range of games, you won't see them taking a dive any time soon. Like it or not. And it's because it has so many series I follow that I'll go with them, of course, should those series ever change system, I will follow. I want a system for the games, not the name of the maker. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |
