Well for a few months now I've been trying to figure out how to get my comp to rip in aif, aiff
for better sound quality, so far the only free program I found is a free trial version, and since i'm having to recollect all the cds I owned I don't want to have to worry about a free trial running out.

so I'm looking for freeware somebody may know about, or a way to simply change the settings on other programs to rip cds in aif.

any help is gladly accepted.

Why the devil would you want to use AIF? Simply because it's lossless? I don't think you're really going to find that all that useful, frankly, but if you really want something lossless, I'd suggest doing FLAC instead. Easier to find utilities, still lossless. You could also try APE, but I think FLAC is a better shot overall.

Of course, if you don't need lossless encoding, I'd suggest learning how to use Easy CD Creator and LAME to create variable bitrate MP3s.

Yes, I prefer CD quality to MP3. Thanks for the tip on FLAC I'm going to go check that out.

as for variable bitrate, I had my MP3s at 160 for a while, tried a few at 192. in the end I still prefer lossless.

Neither of those two things are variable bitrate. VBR cycles from 24kbps up to 360kbps based upon the quality needs of the audio at that particular time.

But, like I say, it's your hard drive, fill it how you like. But given the choice between FLAC and VBR MP3, which can run into double digits in terms of megabytes, I've never seen the point, myself.

I think it's time you invest in the devil for the PC: iTunes.

AIFF is an option for how to import.

Moreover, if it's an option, it means that the iPod is capable of reading the filetype, meaning that you can organize your library in iTunes (Something I really like doing actually), and if you feel the need to invest in an iPod, it can straight up image the iPod to mimic your iTunes setup.

Personally, I don't mind MP3s, and there are multiple options for ripping in MP3 format.

iTunes also allows you to rip in AAC, WAV, and in what they call, "Apple Lossless."

I currently rip my MP3s at 160 kbps, but upon further investigation, you can rip as big as 320 kbps, or just go all out and click the VBR button wink.gif

The one thing Apple has been doing really well (according to market sales) is make MP3 players, and they've been doing just as well making their MP3 player compatability software.

Oh yea, it's free!

Well in terms of Hard drive space, I'm using an external hard drive to store my music. So I'm not too worried about that.

Sadly as I just discovered recently the type of Ipod i have can't play FLAC.

as for Itunes

I honestly laughed when I read that.

I've been trying to find ways to rip music without using itunes, and for how long it's taken to find something(FLAC), just to find out the ipod i have doesn't play FLAC. Well that felt so much like a sitcom I just couldn't help but laugh at that as well.

Currently WAV and "apple Lossless" are the two formats I'm debating using.

-Thanks for all input.
