When entering the final room that Locke is in, there is some red flashing, savepoint-like thing on the other side of the lava. Does anyone know what that is?

I've always wondered what that thing is too. I remember hearing that it's just a way to exit out of the Phoenix Cave and return to the Falcon, but I'm not 100% sure.

It could be a switch. I belive there's a switch like this in Kefka's tower.

Yep, in the event that you ever need to go back into the cave after you've reunited Locke with the group (I did it once since I didn't beat the dragon in the cave, and then went back to fight it at a later time), going back to that marker sends you back up to the ariship.

It's a hugely disappointing 'secret'. At the very least, Locke could run over to it after you rescue him, wink, and warp everyone out. Rather than just throw it out there.
