Tac RPG's, as I've called them, or TRPG's can be a marvelous mash up of strategy and story. Notably the Ogre series, and right now, the best of them all, Final Fantasy Tactics. I'm trying to find a TRPG that could engross me like Tactics did (and, FFT:Advance didn't do it for me). Can anyone suggest a good TRPG?

How about Advance 2? I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but from everything I've heard it seems to take the best parts of Advance and roll them into a more Tactics-like game.
I see that lasz is in this thread, too, so Disgaea comments are inbound. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Try Energy Breaker.
It's an SNES game with tactical RPG (a.k.a. strategy RPG) gameplay but where you can also roam the areas freely. And it's got some pretty distinctive gameplay features. One of which is that every battle has a turn limit, and if you don't finish within that limit, you lose. Which means that things like debuff spells are actually very, very powerful. It's also not an easy game at all. And it's also got a pretty intriguing plot. And great music. It's by the same folks who made the Lufia games, I think. No official English translation, but there's an English fan-translation patch. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. For Advance, there was one thing I couldn't get passed, and that's the referee aspect.
I can just see it now if this happened in real life. The Greeks are lined up at Thermopylae, and the Persians on the other. The Immortals were about to clash with the Hoplites, and then the lines meet in battle. Then, suddenly, a referee throws a flag and is all "The Spartans automatically lose, because in this territory, nothing made of bronze is permitted. Persia, you get to walk through freely and massacre the Athenians! Sorry, Greeks, but that's the rules!" Come on, people, if you want an instance where you don't want something used, create a unit strong against it. Adding a referee is just asinine! -------------------- "So, are you a fan of the Fett?" I posted about it in news, gosh, a month ago? But one that I've been a bit hooked on lately is Heavenstrike Rivals. It's a mobile f2p game - a distinct genre, of course - but as it turns out, a surprising number of the regulars on the community sites seem to have a FF Tactics background.

Tactics Ogre is the first thing that came to mind if you haven't already played it.
Also Front Mission 5 if you're able to deal with the language barrier. Haven't been keeping up with recent titles just as a disclaimer. |

Quote (Rangers51 @ 3rd April 2015 11:39) I see that lasz is in this thread, too, so Disgaea comments are inbound. It seems Lasz missed his cue, so I'll take it up. Have you tried Disgaea? It's what happens when you take a strategy RPG like FFT make it about demons and monsters and multiply it by DBZ. Definitely worth a try if you're into Anime (it's very meta about Anime tropes) and level-grinding (there's no such thin as overkill in Disgaea). I've recently been playing Disgaea 3 on the Vita and I played Disgaea 1 on the PSP some years back. -------------------- Wha? Thanks to me? |
