Unbelievably, neither of these tracks has a history in CoN music competitions, with neither one making it into the bracket in 2010. Both have illustrious places in the canon of Final Fantasy games, even if they have yet to debut here.
When Final Fantasy made the big leap from Nintendo to Sony, from sprite to polygon, from 2D to 3D, Opening Theme / Bombing Mission was there. Starting with quiet strings and chimes, this track accompanied a visual tour through Midgar, transitioning directly into the action as Avalanche executed a raid on a Mako Reactor. This track was famous before the game was even released. On the flip side, Battle was one of the very first Uematsu compositions that gamers would ever encounter in Final Fantasy. Music in games as we know it today does not get much simpler than this composition which still managed to integrate multiple layers of instrumentation and a real feeling of urgency in around thirty seconds' runtime. |

FF1's battle theme is certainly solid, though the linked video does it a bit of a disservice since the two sides of the audio don't seem to be balanced. The remixes from the remakes of the game do it better justice, in my opinion, since they add percussion to the music (missing in the NES version, even though it's still convincing). The PSP version seems to be quite good from my listening to it for the first time just now. For a more unusual instrumentation, try the GBA version. Both are quite nice.
However, the FF7 intro has so much depth to it, setting the scene with its distinctively metallic sound and segueing seamlessly into the opening of the game, and the "Bombing Mission" track is a very very strong action track (though I just wish it did a fuller loop). It is just that striking. This is another difficult choice... I voted Bombing Mission. Maybe I would like FF1 Battle theme more if it wasn't used in every single battle (but it gets a pass I suppose). Bombing Mission feels great!

I only voted on Bombing Mission because of that horn section near the end. Both songs are only decent

I dislike the feeling of voting against something because of its simpler instrumentation, so I went and dug both of these up.
FF1 PSP version battle theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VulSG3nW-rU FF7 Opening / Bombing Mission chiptune version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qvz1Ba0ouE Both tracks are excellent, but only Opening / Bombing Mission has that "wow" factor, even when I ignore the Opening part of it. Opening / Bombing Mission it is. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. No brainer.
Bombing mission is quite possibly the best intro track to any of the games, in my opinion. It just sets up VII so well, and fits that cinematic beautifully. -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |
