The winner of the mini-bracket for songs that lost in the Elite Eight will take fifth place, and it's down to Final Fantasy X' Ending Theme and Chrono Trigger, the, I guess, title track from the game. The Ending Theme really was a surprise in this competition, making it so far without much pedigree from the earlier competition or without much buzz coming in. It rolled strongly until meeting Liberi Fatali, and then recovered from that loss by beating Searching for Friends. Chrono Trigger also lost in the E8 to a championship finalist, Balance is Restored from FF6, and then squeaked out an overtime win over Black Dream to get here.
The Ending Theme for Final Fantasy X incorporates previous themes with its own melodies, a pattern familiar to players of prior games in the series. Final Fantasy X also keeps a strong theme throughout its soundtrack, with many of its themes repeating phrases from others, making this overture-style ending theme a tightly integrated part of the overall score. A newcomer this year is Crono's character theme, Chrono Trigger. While Crono doesn't necessarily start out as Time's Hero, there's no questioning his spirit of adventure, and adventure is the primary theme I can hear in this track. Listen long enough to get to the emotional bridge. |

Crono's Theme is still kinda one-note (no pun intended) in that it expresses one idea and one idea only, which is why I preferred Black Dream over it and still do.
My preference for FF10's ending theme is similar. FF10 ending theme it is. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 19th December 2017 13:30) Crono's Theme is still kinda one-note (no pun intended) in that it expresses one idea and one idea only, which is why I preferred Black Dream over it and still do. My preference for FF10's ending theme is similar. FF10 ending theme it is. That might be, but it's one of the best darn notes there is! That one note carries all the epic, heroic, adventurous elements that make up Chrono Trigger. What I'm saying is, as much as I love FFX's soundtrack, Chrono Trigger's can whip it with all-but-one note tied behind its back! -------------------- |

Chrono Trigger didn't deserve to win over Black Dream, but that's not to say that it isn't a fine track. I certainly prefer it over FF10's Ending Theme.
