Chrono Trigger, Crono's theme from the game of the same name, had little trouble getting to the round of 16 by earning three times the number of votes of its competition over the first two rounds (Highwind from FF7 and FF15's Main Theme, respectively). Loss of Me eked by Temple of Chaos but then cruised easily past The Gapra Whitewood, on the bottom quarter of the bracket.
A newcomer this year is Crono's character theme, Chrono Trigger. While Crono doesn't necessarily start out as Time's Hero, there's no questioning his spirit of adventure, and adventure is the primary theme I can hear in this track. Listen long enough to get to the emotional bridge. Loss of Me from Final Fantasy IX comes in as a strong #3 seed, one of the two FF9 tracks to start so high but a step down from its #2 seed in 2010. Back then, it won two rounds before being blown out by Fight 2 from Final Fantasy IV. Also known as "Rose of May," this piano-heavy tune is closely tied to Beatrix' growth and is often referred to as her character theme, though it's not as explicitly defined as such within the scope of the game. |

Really can't vote on either of these based on their own merits, since I think they're equally good, so I'll give it to Loss of Me, if only cuz I think FF9 ost is underrated compared to that of CT overall.

Loss of Me has a nice melody to it, but the instrumentation is a bit rough compared to the CT theme. I don't usually like to compare instrumentation between systems, but in this case, it's the PS1 track (which ought to have on par or better instrumentation) that's less satisfying.
My vote goes to the CT theme. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |

I was soooo close for voting for the CT theme because I feel Loss of Me gets a bit too repetitive. But that melody is just too gorgeous.

I think this is definitely the toughest match-up of this round. I've waffled back and forth. Rose of May has a lovely melody and is associated with a couple vital narrative moments; Chrono Trigger covers a bit more melodic and narrative ground. Chrono Trigger has a bit more breadth in instrumentation, but the sparser arrangement of Rose of May is fitting. Ultimately, I have to give the edge to Chrono Trigger.

I love the melody of Rose of May, but the instrumentation is a bit weird, and I tend to prefer covers of it. Chrono Trigger is outstanding in every way.

This one's going into overtime! It's all knotted up at the time it was meant to close, so we're adding on another day to vote.

I apparently just broke it.
CT is really shaking up this competition more than I expected it to! Loss of Me is delightful, but doesn't have the same weight behind as the raucous Crono's Theme and the adventure it inspires! -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time!
