Thanks to some help from Harlequin, we're now ready to go for CoN World Cup 2018. If you've been at CoN for a while, you've probably seen our soccer prediction games in the past, mainly populated by Europeans and weirdo Americans. Well, now's your chance to be one of us!
https://narshe.me/CoNWC2018 CoN's soccer prediction games are not fantasy sports, so you don't need to really know very much about soccer to play. In short, we play a game in which you predict the scores of matches at the world's biggest sporting event, and you get points based on how good your guesses are. If it sounds simple, it is; for more details, just go sign up at the link above and then look through the rules to learn when and how to predict matches. You enter by choosing the country you think will win, which can be changed any time before the tournament starts in 10 days. After entering, you can predict as many of the first 48 matches as you like, at any time before they start. We even allow you to make random picks so all you need to do is make a couple clicks to be done. If you have questions about the game, the World Cup, or soccer in general, or want advice on your picks, feel free to post here or come to chat. If you're looking for more resources, try these (or share your own!). Tomorrow is the first match, so if you want to sign up soon enough to get bonus points, you have to be in by kickoff!

Any mediocre software programmer - like yours truly - will quickly tell you that dealing with time zones is the worst.
That's my way of saying that I screwed up all the match times. They should be fixed now. Don't forget to keep making picks, people.
Yesterday was a really fun slate of games, to echo Gears' point. Not just Portugal/Spain, which was an absolute blast to watch, but Morocco/Iran was a lot of end-to-end action between two nations that played far better than I expected and Egypt/Uruguay was extremely tense. Both of those games were just crushing at the end. I managed to make picks for all the games today and still got 0 points 🤦♂️. This year is kicking my butt. Watch Belgium and England get smoked tomorrow, too

I feel bad about not jumping on board this when I had the chance.
I didn't want to invest the time to decide who to pick here, after my experiences of taking annoyingly forever to go through all the stuff for March Madness events. Well, now the people in my meatspace vicinity are talking about this. And even more than March Madness. A lot of people have been missing out on making picks, so the only thing you'd miss out on if you got in now would be the bonus points for picking a winner. And, to be honest, most of the favorites for the tournament have looked pretty poor so far, so even those of us who DID make picks might be worried at the moment! -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I just noticed when I make picks on my phone it stores my outcomes as “draws”, regardless of what I choose for the score, so watch out for that (if I go back and edit it after it’s been submitted it works, though)

I'll try to get a look at that if I get a chance in the next couple days. I suspect it's due to my attempt long ago to check the scores to try to avoid people picking a different winner than their scores indicated. Today has been an absolute blast for neutral fans or people who just like the underdog, I suspect. And the prediction scores have suffered accordingly, except for Death Penalty who managed to predict POL 1 - 2 SEN accurately and got four points for it. Can't wait for the last game of the day.

Congrats to Stiltzkin with the first perfect match of the tournament, predicting 1-0 to Portugal with Ronaldo scoring first.
That said, Morocco had no business losing that match. Portugal did not look good. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

DP notified me earlier that I botched the recording of the Germany/Sweden match - in my defense, that game ended while I was in the middle of a six-hour airport layover after already having flown 17 hours.
When I goof up one of those, it's a bit of a hassle to untangle it and it will likely take me until tomorrow sometime to find time to do it - I'll edit this post once I have everyone's scores fixed. (And don't worry, I'll get to it, because I should have had four points out of that match!) Moderator Edit It's been fixed now, thanks for the patience. Since everyone who made a pick chose Germany to win, it did make a pretty big difference in scores! Of course, shame that it didn't help Germany all that much in the end... I've just gotten the first six of the eight Round of 16 matches added properly, so they can be chosen. I'll add the last two probably around this time tomorrow once we know what teams will go where. Those games kick off in just over two days, so don't wait too long to make picks - the scores per match double starting with those matches, so you'll quickly be left behind should you miss out.

New bump because I note that a few folks missed today's first match. I'm adding the knockout matches as fast as I can, and we have two days off from matches after today, so make sure you make all four of your quarterfinal picks soon - I'll add the last one after today's late game. I'm back in the country now and will be faster about adding new matches from here on in.

Crap. I'm one of them. Can't say I know what I'd have predicted, but probably would've gotten least a couple points there. I really hope I don't lose by those 4 points or so you gained!

The two semifinals are available to pick, with the first one kicking off tomorrow and the second on Wednesday. The third place and final matches will be filled in after Wednesday's match, and take place on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The last two matches are ready to pick now. Again, they're Saturday and Sunday.
Doing some quick math in my head, it looks like the battle for podium places is down to four players now: me, Stiltzkin, Cefca, and Gears. Nothing separates Cefca and I except these last two games; we both have the same number of points and bonus points at the moment. We are both within range of overtaking Stiltzkin if we can outscore him by four or more points over the final two matches. Gears is a fun one in the mix, because having chose Belgium to win the Cup, and being the only person to do so, his bonus points aren't yet locked in as they play Saturday for third place. He's currently nine points off the podium but is guaranteed either five or six bonus points to which none of the people above him can respond, which in reality means he needs to outscore either Cefca or I by only four in the last two games to possibly knock one of us off. This is definitely one of the tightest CoN soccer games I can remember in terms of the top three spots! -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

That was a crazy-high-scoring final versus what everyone expected to happen, I think. You have to think that Croatia just ran out of gas, a little, but France were definitely the superior team on the day. The top four spots were all up for grabs, with different champions and third-place finishers flipping around almost all match, but those second-half goals really cemented things in what was one of the tightest tournaments we've had.
In the end, Stiltzy won as soon as France scored their third goal. Second place went to me, after I nipped Cefca only because I had one perfect prediction in group play and he didn't get any. Gears had a chance to sneak in as well but couldn't quite get there in the end. My favorite result, though, was Neal managing to not finish last even though he only signed up to predict the third place game and the final. ShaneT12's lack of memory for making buried him under the latecomer. I wasn't sure this was going to be a great tournament either on the field or at CoN, but I think it was a blast in the end. Hope everyone had fun, and I'll dig up forum awards as soon as I can! -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I hate sports. No offense to y'all. Most Americans that are into 'sport' as I call it tend to view it as akin to jungle warfare in the level of intensity they place on it. It kind of poisoned my well a little.

I just didn't want you to think I was ignoring your game out of spite. I actually dislike professional sports. As for Square-Enix, Mr. Ranger Sir, I am merely pointing out that when I say "Squaresoft" I am referring to the releases which they made under that name. They are my favorites? Since the merger I have not only sort of become dissatisfied with the gameplay/stories they put out, but also (you realize) become ensconced in my own artistic expression. The two combine to form a rather interesting turn-off effect for everything from about 7 on. I began to write my own stuff more. ... I dunno. The other games seem like good fun, if I ever really got time to sit down and do them. But I am sort of uh...trying not to die? You kind of have to keep at this music stuff or you get rusty. Didn't meant to come off as judging. I may be drunk all the time but I rarely judge before I am judged. In the long and short of it, I feel out of place with every group I approach. You're not special. -------------------- X is blue. |
