Final Fantasy III/VI is one of those games I've always been a casual fan of but just never gotten around to finishing (mostly because I've never actually owned the game outright, always rented or borrowed). I'd been on something of a "catching up with media from my youth" kick recently and decided it was about time I rectify that.

I started out with the original US Super NES game on an emulator even though the recent Pixel Remaster release on Switch was tempting me. Finally, a few characters into the World of Ruin, my curiosity got the better of me and I switched versions (no pun intended), figuring if I were going to make the switch I'd better do it then before I went any further and kill my desire to do it all over, and that I'd gotten enough of an impression of the SNES game by then that I could easily spot all the "new & updated stuff" in the Switch game and have it feel fresh. (Also my being tired of playing on a cell phone might've had something to do with it).

I'm mostly impressed with how faithful the Remaster is to the original game (especially when compared to this Android version I've read about - yikes!), and it's been real satisfying to finally experience all this Final Fantasy III/VI stuff in context: Kefka destroying the world, the opera scene, Shadow being Relm's dad, Cyan witnessing his family head off to the afterlife, etc. etc. Not to mention a whole lot of music that I'd never heard in its proper context!

Currently, I'm right at Kefka. Like, literally, because right when I'd gotten through his "totem pole" and rose to meet him in the air (?), the game froze on me! Gonna give it another go tomorrow, wish me luck (both for the battle and that the game doesn't freeze again)!

I had the Pixel Remaster freeze on me a number of times on PC, but some of those times were definitely my fault when I was mucking around with savegames. Glad to see someone finishing the game for the first time and finding CoN in so doing!

Ohmigosh, yay! I had to emulate the game when I was a kid and it made a lifelong retro rpg gamer out of me. My brother wouldn't let me touch the borrowed playstation and mom wouldn't let me have games so I got back at them both by way of emulation. My poor brother's face when I told him that I'm a retro cosplayer now because of him. Worth it!
I only just acquired a hard copy of the game last year and my first SNES so I feel your excitement. I did enjoy the PR very much and recommend it for a casual playthrough although the opera 'upgrade' left me confused as to its inclusion. If you're looking for all the complete content, though the GBA version of the game has the additional content designed in the early 00s that add to it nicely. You can find it emulated online with no required download if you're interested but it definitely has that GBA music nerf to it plus the graphics were tanked for the system.

The other PRs were worth it for sure especially 1-3 and I hope you have a great time burying yourself in the games!

Woot! I've officially made Kefka my beyotch. An epic and satisfying conclusion to one of the 16-bit era's all-time greats. Though am I crazy or did Shadow leave himself behind again?

It was actually a funny moment, since the music was still going it took me a minute to realize the game had frozen. I thought my team was just giving Kefka an epic staredown.

Also, how rude of me not to mention CoN! I fell down an internet rabbithole while looking for good walkthroughs and it eventually lead me here. I'm glad to see there's still a place out there specifically for the original Final Fantasies.

Final Fantasy is fortunate enough to get perpetual rereleases, but for most older games emulation really is our most realistic option. No regrets here, for sure!

I might have to take a break from Final Fantasy VI (I'll use that title for convenience sake but it'll always be "Final Fantasy III" in my heart biggrin.gif ) after going through it 1.5 times non-stop, but it's good to know there's still more of it out there. Thanks for the tip!

It just occurred to me that I never passed Final Fantasy I either despite actually owning the damn thing back in the day, so I've already decided I'm going to tackle that one here real soon!

Will you do us the honor of doing a suplex of a train? You can be given the option of a sword or the stone. Did you need help with that? cool.gif

If you have not done it already.

I missed out on suplexing the train on my first emulator run-through, but made sure I got to experience it the second time around on the PR!
