I'm not even sure what to call some characters anymore.
In the game itself, the first opening sequences mention the "Duray papers". Later in the game, Olan Durai hits the scene. Neat. Later in the game, its called the Durai papers, written by Orlan Durai. ... What? This is by far one of the bests games I've ever played, and it might just be my copy, but the mistranslations made me want to cry. "Delita is a friend of you." ...Whhaaat? |

Lol
fighting Dycedarg with Zalbag confused me at first. I was like "why do they want me to kill Zalbag?" |

No, that only happened once. The first time they did it was in Mandalia Plains, sitting in the grass. Except then, Delita had said, "Remember when father taught us how to play that reed flute?" To be honest, that single line could be just a mistranslation, or could mean that Delita is an illigitimate child and brother of Ramza. I'm going for mistranslation. |

I've always felt that Delita's use of "father" represented his feeling that he was a part of the family, making the later separation that much more poignant. That said, what do I know? I haven't seen the original Japanese, wouldn't be able to read it if I had, and haven't consulted the translating team either. |

I've found that the original release had some good lines that fit the spirit of the text. Like the aforementioned 'Father' reference. Delita and Teta were obviously considered family by the Beoulve's, well until Balbanes dies that is.
As far as mistranslations go, I've found the PSP version of this game just doesn't feel right to me. I mean, 'Isolude' or whatever. Really, can't we just leave it alone? Now I know the Tutorial was butchered in the original, but the main story seemed to be just fine, aside from a few isolated incidents. -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Enjoy. I was a soldier, now I just play one in video games. |

Delita considers the Beoulves to be his family, although that may reflect his naivety at the time since, in an earlier scene, Balbanes says that "Delita will serve you well" -- he might not be framing "family" in the same way. But then again, he did get entered into Gariland's academy...
As far as mistranslations go, I always remember Alma's quote, something like "I love this holy land of Yvalice." Or maybe they just don't teach spelling at her convent? Haha... -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

I like the original's spelling of the names I mean come on Barbaneth? Argath? Zalbaag? Really Balbanes Algus and Zalbag are better on t' ear
Also the mistranslations are quite funny in some ways except when I killed Zalbag instead of Dycedarg, not funny in the least and some of the propositions are faulty. I sent a female lancer on the job and when she reported on it it called her Jody Lune Knight -------------------- Since I advertise CoN there I think it's only fair that I advertise The Wiki here. |

One thing that always bothered me about the original translation was the fact that all the characters sounded so... modern. I mean, they're basically living in Medieval England and they all have such modern speech patterns? Plus, I'm a sucker for Shakespearean English.

I find most of the mistranslations pretty funny, so I don't mind them.
What does annoy me is how slow the text comes up in the chapter introductions, for example: "l...i...t....t..l...e....m...o...n...e.....y" at the start of chapter 1. -------------------- FF games completed: I (psp), II (psp), III (DS), IV (psp), V (GBA), VI (GBA), VII, VIII, IX, X, XI: Nations-Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, XII, XIII, XIV, XV. Spin-offs: FFIV: Interlude & The After Years, Crisis Core: FFVII, X-2, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Type-0 HD, Dissidia, Dissidia 012, and Tactics (original & WotL). Enjoyed them all. |

Thats a dumb idea, since ye olde english didn't exactly sound like what we speak today. It was about half a language away, and shakespeare was an idiot. D: < |

Quote and shakespeare was an idiot. Be happy I'm not the conflictuous type. But I do agree that the game's better in modern English. About the names they have, though, I'm not that convinced. Balbanes, Algus, Dycedarg, Zalbag, Ramza, Gafgarion, Reis, Delita, Mustazio, Agrias, are good names that fit the game's atmosphere. Arnold (put that cookie down!), Bugsy, Dick (!), Masahiro, Norris (he was my monk )... oh, and Peppermint, Shields, Stawberry? That just bothers me. Oh, and I see a lot of generic names they took from my native language. And then there are the other names. Alma is the portuguese word for Soul. Teta?... well, I'd rather not say. -------------------- Snooping as usual, I see? |

I'm a total sucker for the new translation, to be honest, once I saw Cuchilainn speaking in blank verse, I realized that not EVERYTHING Squeenix does post-Sakaguchi is all bad.
As far as the new names go, I could go either way on most of them (except maybe Folmarv) but I like that they cleaned up a lot of clearly mis-translated named too: Belias and Cuchulainn are both mythological creatures, and is almost certainly what the original localization was going for. And way, I'm a huge sucker for Shakespeare...now if only they'd put it out for PS2 or something so I didn't have to deal with the tiny screen and spell lag... -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

Most of these made me giggle.
Oh, and in the Germonik Scriptures, Wiegraf is referred to as Wiefgraf. (Atleast I think it's in there... If not, it's definitely in the 'Zodiac Brave Story' option in the Start Menu) |

Does anyone remember summoning the awesome, fearsome, all-powerful 'Rich'? haha.
I agree with the "little omygodwhyhasanhourgonebythisisonlytheintro money" and the beginning. But, I was always able to glaze over the flaws in favour of how great the game and story was. All this mistranslation and odd default character names reminds of another great game, though - Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen anyone? Would YOU save 'you beautiful lover'? Quote (Kane @ 31st October 2009 08:15) [QUOTE=Charmaine,30th October 2009 12:32]...hat single line could be just a mistranslation, or could mean that Delita is an illigitimate child and brother of Ramza. That makes sense. In 'Fire Emblem: Binding Blade' (which was misnamed as 'Sword of Seals', ironically), Roy and the blonde-haired archer (forget the name) were referred to as brothers, when they had completely different parents. But it turns out they were close friends as chidldren. So Delita being a child and brother of Ramza could be in a metaphorical sense. Unless we got some crazy boilogical happenings behind the scenes... |
