Exactly that. What draws you to certain kinds of music? The lyrics? Just the sound? My enjoyment of music is purely based on sound. Lyrics for the most part mean nothing to me that is why I am not very good at song interrpretation. I'm not listening to the words. I'm listening to the chords, the tune, etc. I think that's why I like a lot of music in foreign languages or just chanting meaningless words. A good example of this would be my favorite song from a game of all time. That would be the intro song to Suikoden 3. It's the sound of the music that evokes emotions. I find it's that way with most songs.

Mostly it's the music itself, if it's memorable or catchy it'll immediately catch my interest. But I'll only really like it if it provokes some kind of emotion, like Sadness, Despair, Anger, Frustration, Upbeat, Romantic or anything like that.
The lyrics, if used correctly, can really bring out the mood of the song, but it all depends on the meaning of them and how well they go with the music. As of right now, two of my favorite songs are the Neo Contra Theme and Snake Eater from MGS3. -------------------- |

+sensible harmonies (I seem to be a fan of cliche harmonies sometimes)
+coherent melody (optional) +emotion or other "deep" meaning -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |

I have to say the sound, too, although I can't completely make sense of why. I suppose a part of it is whether I want to be pepped up (metal, alternative rock) or if I jest want to relax (classical). In either case, they don't annoy me, like country and practically anything w/o real instruments do.
I hardly ever relate to any message that any given artist(s) have to say and in some songs, the lyrics make no sense, anyway. However, their singing voice does matter to me and the above criteria (or whatever) also apply to it. For instance, I absolutely HATE "pretty" male voices (practically any R&B singer fits this category). In general, I prefer grungier (is that the right word?) voices (me personal fave singing voice has to be Chris Cornell's). I can go on and on, really, but I believe this pretty well sums things up for me. -------------------- |

It needs to make me want to move around.
Sometimes a song just hits home; 'Stop crying your heart out' by Oasis or Yann Tiersen's Comptine d'un autre ete: l'Apres Midi; those are just beautiful. But in general, I'm attracted to the kind of music that captures life's spirit, music that's spunky. -------------------- |

I like a lot of music in foreign languages , too, because of the sounds...I like electric guitar sounds, specially rather than a lyric. I think the music can bring different emotions of the people which listen to it. But regardless of their respective languages, the spirit of music is the same , specially with just sounds. That's why I enjoy more just-sound music.

Normally what draws me to music depends on what style of music it is.
In general though, first comes the overall sound of the song. It's melody and beat. It depends on the genre, like for a heavy metal or hardcore song, I'd like heavy hitting drum powered melody, for something more classical or alternative, maybe a catchy beat or funky rhythm that I can tap my foot to. Good guitar solos, no matter where, hook me, so long as it fits with the song. Lyrics don't really attract me to the song, but if I already like the song it adds to how much I like the song itself. I like songs that have a lot of energy to them because I prefer music live than anything, so if I can get into the music at a show then it'll work for me. Catchy beats, sing-a-long chant lines or choruses or something. Some songs/bands just work with you. They just appeal to you in ways you can't really explain. Some, you just identify with, some just make you smile. Soul and Passion for the music they create and putting a lot of feeling into their work will definatly attract me to a group/singer/band, whatever. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Everything about it...the lyrics and the melody. I feel so relaxed whenever I listen to music.

In order of importance.
1. BEATS. It needs to have a catchy/complex/danceable/interesting/fun rhythm if I'm going to listen to it. This can include just about any range of percussion, harmonies, and that you can think of, but if it's too boring then I'm not interested. 2. Progressions. I'm a fan of screaming electric guitar riffs, electronica breakout synth interludes, bangin' blues piano melodies, insane latin marimba solos, you name it. But if the progressions aren't pleasing to the ear, then it isn't worthwhile. 3. Voice. Note I didn't say lyrics. While it is extremely easy for me to ignore lyrics, the timbre and "beauty" of a person's voice can make or break a song. Even particularly gravelly or unusual voices can fit a song well - a beautiful voice doesn't always have to be a euphonic female voice. 4. Lyrics - Lyrics are easily ignored in many songs, at least for me, but sometimes particularly well-written or deep lyrics can make an otherwise okay song awesome. Still not as important as the other above elements, though. 5. That inexplicable something. Sometimes you're drawn to a particular song for no reason at all. The rhythm isn't particularly infectious, the main melody doesn't stand out, maybe there aren't even lyrics at all, but you can't get it out of your head or stop humming it. -------------------- |

Well, the thing about me is that I can’t hate music. All musical pieces I have listened to always have something… about them. I don’t know what draws me to music, but if I listen to a song enough, I’ll get used to it. It’s both a curse and a blessing….
Of course, there are 2 genres of music that generally take me longer to get used to: Country and Rap -------------------- And don't drive your car off a cliff like I did. Girl, no man is worth 10 points on your license. |

The lead singer's voice generally is what gets me.

I'm utterly drawn to the emotive power of sound. my favourite songs are all written in a minor key, as it is far more powerful. i am also very drawn to a singer who uses their voice very dramatically, or even a little bit unique. the sound of a word can enthrall me as well. the only example i can muster up right now is in 'Total Job' by the Faint, the way the singer says 'he sways the verdict, the jury is numb', along with the notes he chooses, makes for a very captivating 'instrumentation'.
there have been very very few lyrics that have ever moved me. poetry doesn't interest me at all. prose is slightly different, if you don't listen to the words, but how they are spoken. it's all about the sound. -------------------- The first duty in life is to assume a pose, and the second duty is...well, no one's found out yet. |

It's gotta be exciting. If there's alot of other stuff that's the same as it, I'm generally not gonna like it, and that's partially the reason I don't like most modern mainstream music. I used to be a big metal fan, Sabbath, Maiden and the like, but after a while I got bored. I then got into Captain Beefheart, and since discovering him, not much has been able to hold my interest. With the exception of Kings of Leon, it's gotta be quirky, exciting, dynamic, doing something weird and subtly complex, which is why I'm tending to listen to alot of Electronic music lately as well as post-rock, generally stuff like Tortoise, Stereolab, Prefuse 73. Long story short, it needs to be doing something new and different, and some slide guitar never hurts.

I think what draws me to music is the voice. You gotta have a deep thorough voice in music. But its not only the voice, its the passion, how they feel when theyre up there singing
