So... yeah, hurricane Rita. Not good. It's literally going to hit our small town of Bay City, Texas almost DEAD ON. Or at least there's like a 60% chance of it hitting us directly, and even if it doesn't, we'll still take quite a hit. My entire home might be levelled, but I'm trying not to think about that. Me, my parents, and my bro and sis are going north to Cleburne, which is around the Dallas/Fort Worth area to stay at my cousins' for the weekend.

So... be prayin' for me, I'll need it.

Who else is going to be affected by Rita? I know there's a lot of Texans at CoN. There was one funny thing, my friend Brian came to school wearing a sticky note that said "I eat hurricanes."

Yo! man my prayers are with you. This is the second strongest hurricane ever in hystory ever in the Atlantic Basin. Your best bet is to go as far inland my friend, you don't wanna deal with the water problems of a category 5 hurricane, that's deadly. NOAA says it will strenghten even more, but eventualy it will weaken ( not that much) before it makes landfall. Be sure to have a camera with you, you're in for a lifetime experience like not many have seen before. My strongest experience was Hurricane Hugo with winds of a 140 mph down here in Puerto Rico, and that was something, just imagine what 165 mph could do... DAMN!

I won't be going to school for a couple of days because evacuees from the coast are using my school as a shelter. I live in east Texas, so I will probably be getting some wind and severe weather there. :/

So, for a while, I had a message on my IRC channel topic saying something like (or at least suggesting; I forget the particulars) "please help out or donate money to relief and recovery efforts in the Central South US" (i.e., Louisiana, Biloxi, etc....).

Then today, I changed it to "Not again: [hyperlink]" where the hyperlink was for a Miami Herald (a South Florida newspaper) article on Rita.

Earlier today, one of my friends, who is from Houston, was visibly worried about Rita.

I've also considered calling my friend Rita and wondering if she ever had her name mentioned for the sake of its being the same as the Hurricane's. Another friend of mine, named Katrina, has told me that she gets that relationship mentioned about 3 times a day.

Keep in mind that most damage from hurricane comes from flood waters, not the winds. I hope everything turns out to be more or less okay. My house was still standing after Hurricane Andrew, but that's about all that could be said for it. It took almost a year to really recover, but we did. I'm sure things will be all right in the end.

So you mean that it's the water that smashed Biloxi (as in the famed post-Katrina pictures), and not the 140-mile-per-hour winds?

Hey guys, I'm posting this from Cleburne. We got here safely, although it took about 10 hours when it usually takes 6, but that's not NEAR as bad as the people in Houston. If you've seen the major not-moveage on those highways you know what I'm talking about. We were going a steady 40 mph for most of the trip, with only one major traffic jam, and that was only for about 4 miles.

Anyway, I got pretty far on FFVIII on the way there! I don't see what everyone hates about that game, I'm finding it to be very good (I'm inside Lunatic Pandora).

Y'know what really sucks? The hurricane's barely even going to HIT our town, even though there was like a 60 percent chance of us being right smack dab in the middle of it! I'm pretty sure it's because of all the hot weather we've been having. But oh well, we got a vacation, so we might as well make the best of it, although I might have to miss school on Monday because of all the traffic heading BACK.

Wise move Spyff, even if it doesn't hit your town is better to be safe than sorry, you never know what hurricanes will do in the last minute before it makes landfall. If it slowsdown it will cause exreme surge damage.

And who says wind doesn't cause damage. In the coast water is the trouble maker, two miles inland wind is the trouble!

We were fortunate enough to be in the southern part of Texas, seems as if it's barely gonna miss us, but nothing as of yet of just what we are gonna get, probably some rain and thas it. But I hope it works out for everyone else.

That is hardly something that sucks. happy.gif If you're not going to have to deal with the aftermath of a hurricane, be grateful. I'm sure you are, on some level, but man...I know I never want to go through that again.

And what I said before about most damage being caused by floodwaters and not winds is true. It's a statistical fact. Dollar-amount damage is almost always greater due to flooding, even when it's only a couple of inches and not the entire neighborhood.

Well that's not exactly what I meant, but I see how it seemed like I was sad that it missed from the way I worded that paragraph. What I meant was: it sucks that there was all this hooplah and we lost school days (which we'll have to make up during Christmas hoildays/Easter) for nothing. I just wished that we'd known maybe ONE day sooner that we were in the clear, that way there wouldn't have been all that chaos. But I'm definately very grateful. I mean, if it had continued along its "likely" path, our house probably woudn't have been there when we got back. And well... I don't really want to think about what would've happened.

But there's still a possibility that it may turn back toward the West, so I'm not totally in the clear just yet. And even if there was no danger, I guess it's better safe than sorry!

That's great. The storm left the area a week ago. I think we're done here.
