Ok, aside from the obvious games (such as certain entries into the Saga series) what long running or semi-long running rpg series do you think won't have another sequel? The last game was so bad that you don't think the game company will make another one?
My guess is that there will be no Breath of Fire VI. Of course with my luck someone will pop in and tell me that there is going to be one. Now I"m not necessarily saying that I don't think they should make one, I'm just saying that I don't think they will. -------------------- Elena Indurain Currently Playing: Suikoden II |

I have to disagree with you there, Elena. Capcom is notorious for rolling out sequels, spinoffs, and rehashes more than any other company and I'm sure that there will be another Breath of Fire, even if it isn't for another three years. Plus, I think that Dragon Quarter sold decently in Japan, probably decently enough for a future sequel.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there will never be another Bloody Roar game. If I'm not mistaken, there have been six entries to that series, but no desperately-needed engine reworkings since the second game in the series. It's popularity is low, it's gameplay is awful, and spiffy graphics and zoanthropic characters aren't enough to merit a game that will sell very well. There hasn't been a worthwhile buy in this series since Bloody Roar II, IMHO. -------------------- |

That series as good as dead. Atleast judging by the last one. |

I don't see another Mystical Ninja port coming to the US. I just doubt they will even if they release in Japan.

Well, after the first Chrono Trigger, I predicted that there wouldn't be another Chrono Trigger series game. Then Chrono Cross occured. So that's out.
I could safely say that FFI and FFV probably won't have any sequels. But that's within a series of more-or-less unconnected games. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I haven't seen another Grandia, though they were a great series. Or a Star Ocean, save for III. I'd like to see both continue for a while, but I think their companies have moved on

I absolutely loved Grandia I and II, so I'm looking forward to the next one; Grandia Xtreme was a bit of an experiment for Enix I think, but they'll learn from all those storyline and world-design mistakes, hopefully. And why do you think Star Ocean is dying out? The last one was only two years ago in release, I'm betting we see SO4 within three years, especially since Squenix has proven to be sequel-whores recently; Hell, they'll probably remake the original SO before too long, given their recent history of doing that for DQ and FF games. Another series that I think might be gone for good is Ape Escape. The first one was awesome to the extreme, the next two were meh, and the PSP remake of the first one was also meh. Sony isn't going to invest any more in to a one-trick pony. -------------------- |

Actually, Grandia III comes out sometime this year in Japan, I think, or maybe early next year. Don't know if a localization has been announced yet. Anyway, it looks really really good.

The Chrono series. Time and time again they've talked about the third installment, but it has never happened.

The post-game FFV anime could count as a sequel, no? Then again, I dunno if it should be considered canon; although Square gave its creators permission, they had no hand in its production... I agree it isn't looking too good for EarthBound 2/Mother 3. After a long line of Megaman games, I don't think there's gonna be anymore, though I can't say the same thing for the MMX series. But I wouldn't be surprised if they rolled out Megaman 9, would Rockman and Forte be considered part 9?

Glenn, you really should play CC, it's an AMAZING game. It's my 3rd favorite game, while CT isn't even in my top 5 (don't hurt me)! You REALLY have to pay attention in the end or the plot will make no sense whatsoever, but it's a great game.
Anyway, I think I can safely say that there WILL be more Megaman games, and LOTS OF 'EM. They've been milkin' the MM cash cow for ages, and I don't think they'll stop anytime soon.l -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

I'm guessing that there won't be a Lunar 3, which saddens me. Working Designs seems to have dedicated its efforts elsewhere, on things like Lunar: Dragon Song (I think?) that are more spin-offs than sequels and that deviate substantially from the precedents set by the other two games in the series.
I don't really see any more Seiken Densetsu sequels, either, but that's not really sad given how Legend of Mana turned out. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

^ World of Mana comes out next year in Japan. I'm excited.
And IMO, Chrono Cross is one of the most divisive games ever. There are equally vocal populations that love it and hate it, with proportions of both groups loving and not loving Chrono Trigger. I personally think that Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs ever conceived (it's tied for my favorite all-time with SoA) and that Chrono Cross did a lot of things very well and a lot of things quite badly. And Glenn, calling CC a true sequel and refusing to play it for said reason is kinda ridiculous. Refusing to acknowledge its place in the storyline because of one's preferences for the past is almost like saying that the Confederacy still exists. And on another note, of course Square won't sequelize old FF games. They simply were released too long ago to become part of Squenix's sequel-whoring trend of recent times. Making a "prediction" like that is like predicting that there will never be a sequel to On the Waterfront that stars Marlon Brando, because Marlon Brando's dead. -------------------- |

Possible spoilers: highlight to view What the hell? Circe had her powers because she was a descendant of Helios, who was the son of Hyperion, who was born from Gaea and Oranos (Medea is either her sister or her niece, I'm not sure which, and she has her magic powers for the same reason). I have no idea why you're trying to insert CT into Greek myth (or any "real" history whatsoever), but that just doesn't make sense. I was almost a classics major, you know. -------------------- |

Now I"m not necessarily saying that I don't think they should make one, I'm just saying that I don't think they will. I think everyone has it wrong. There will be another Breath of Fire but right now Capcom is deeply trying to focus on more of it’s more successful series since they seems to be hinting close at running out of money. Breath of Fire V like most of the PS2 RPGs were run by a new brand of RPG makers, a new generation. Now the problem with this generation is, instead of creating a new formula with a new game, they played with successful game brand titles and pretty much screwed the entire brand. Final Fantasy Series, Xenosaga Series, Breath of Fire series, Suikoden Series, and pretty much every Japanese RPG series. With this generation, they destroyed Japan’s dominance of the RPG genre. Instead of PS again being the RPG king this time around, they effectly lost out to the Xbox. Every RPG released on the Xbox after a certain point in time became a world hit. Who would of thought the xbox or pretty much the west would control the RPG market. Now western angst filled teenage kids still claim Japan still makes the top RPGs and that the RPGs on the Xbox and PC are not truly RPGs because they don’t follow the same turned based formula. Problem is the turned based formula was copied for D&D games which they claim D&D games are not truly RPGs either. However, what they refuse to comment on is whether the new generation of Japanese RPG makers taking out turned based are truly RPGs, which is they’re only claim to what an RPG really is. Breath of Fire V took a popular and respected genre and rehashed it with new ideas which did sit well with regular fans. If anything if they make a sequel, it would be going back to there roots unless Capcom wants to do an Nintendo and not listen to the fans and wonder why people don’t buy there products as much. I doubt you will see many good RPGs coming out from Japan and going on the PS2 or PS3. Hell, the Xbox 360 already has one of it’s first games coming out for the system that is going to be a block buster. Pretty much what this new Generation of game makers in Japan never learned from there previous generation was don’t treat the American consumers like idiots. Don’t give them half made products and release a better version in your home country. They never learned this and have deeply suffered. For the Xbox 360 most of the Japanese Makers we know and love are making a return and are creating games exclusively for this system. Don’t get me wrong, some of the ideas for new game play in these RPGs by Japanese Game makers are interesting, well most are boring (Play Xenosaga I and II and you will understand boring) and I like new ideas for games. Great ideas keep the industry moving. But please, don’t mess with popular series and pretty much destroy the original formula almost completely and expect people to still like it! -------------------- His Divine Shadow |
