Has anybody else played this game? It's a SNES game by Square Soft released in the late 90s, while the story isn't bad the main place this game stands out is its 'make your own' magic system.

Basically you enscribe your own magic by typing in various words. The game will give you spells, but to have them when you need them, you'll need to try and find your own! Type in FIRE for a weak single target fire spell or VIRUS to lower the enemies spirit. Its all very well made.

The battle system is well designed as well, and really forces you use everything from physical to magical and debilitating skills rather than just going through the game pressing 'attack' over and over.

Ya'll should check it out one time. It's not quite Final Fantasy, but it's still worth a shot ^^ There's even a Cid who flies an airship and thieves who INSIST they are treasure hunters. =P

You started a topic on it? Oh. >< Sorry, I missed it, otherwise I woulda' found that rather than started a new...

Anyway, I actually found it during one of my many 'obscure SNES RPG' hunts.
This, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Villgust. But Treasure of the Rudras was the only one worth topic-ing. =P

I've started a new game in this not too long ago, man did I ever miss playing it!

The spell system is quite awesome, but much more limited than it seems. Reserved words, of which there are 1990, all point to one of 256 different spells. I'm not sure it's the case with non-reserved words (for instance, adding "NA" to make a spell hit everything) but I suspect it works the same way too.

I stumbled on some totally weird spells sorting out uniques. GALAXY is worth a try - I can't think of any use for it at the moment. It seems most spells have a pattern to them (about 5-6 single-target and 5-6 multi-target spells per element, each going in increasing amounts of MP and damage)

Some other interesting things would include the Berserk status (never knew it existed until I stumbled on a spell that causes it), the dispell-all spell (impressive!), and the other spells like GALAXY (one per element - I think the fire one was JARJAR)

It's a shame there are only a few dozen slots for spells. smile.gif I usually keep the first three slots for healing spells (contrary to popular belief, MEGAMI is not the best multi-target healing spell), one slot for revival spells, a slot for each element's single and multi target spells, four for misc junk (PHOENIX being an important one), and the last 8 for stat-affecting spells.

While I haven't played the game, it seems like a quite interesting magic system.

It also caused the following moment in another (not #narshe) chat channel:

I really liked the game, as I finished it only a week ago. I only did the scenario with warrior though (can't remember his name) and I have to admit that is one of the hardest games I have ever seen! I don't remember not one boos that required so much leveling that I had to use over 20 save states and all my items (including MP restorating items) along with most powerful spells. Using save states, I think it took me 30mins to beat the first boss.

The Final boss was IMPOSSIBLE, I just wanted to see the end so I completely cheated; After wiping 15k HP in about 3mins, I got sick and took a memery editor to put his HP down to one and finish him will a staff hit.

I was very impressed by what the game had to offer, and I was happy the storyline doesn't focus on "pollution" as it did on the beginning. But a no-no for the leveling. tongue.gif

TIP: ALWAYS FIND YOUR ENEMIES ELEMENTAL WEAKNESS, They almost all have one, and I remember killing a boss in 5-6 TERASORUS (a 21mp powerful lightning single enemy spell). Even if it's not always super impressive, most bosses seems to show a weakness against lightning.

Am I the only one that found the game hard?

Yes, the game is really hard. tongue.gif All RPGs should have this level of challenge, IMO. You can't breeze through the game solely by levelling (the proof: my party is all at 99 and without using defensive spells, the last boss owns me in a few turns.)

What rocks is the way the three scenarios blend in together so well. Once you've played all 3, the game really sounds like a masterpiece. And the final scenario has the most awesome boss battle music I've ever heard. biggrin.gif The last boss is a massive challenge, mainly because most attacks will do less than 1000 damage and your party only has a max of 999 hp (at level 99, most have around 650.)

It just goes to show you that bigger numbers a-la Squaresoft aren't always a good idea, particularly on a system like the SNES. The last boss battle involves less than 65,000 hp spread across three battles. It's more like 45,000 hp total. Kefka? Seeing as you can kill him in a dozen hits, the fight isn't very long (though impressive - gotta love that music.) Rudora's last boss? You're going to be fighting an uphill battle trying to stay alive as you hit for a few hundred per turn. The 65,000 mark is harder to hit when you're used to 800-1000 damage per round of fighting.

Awesome game. biggrin.gif

I completed it ages ago, it can be quite tough... biggest tip I got? Find all the stat up and stat down spells. they can make HUGE difference in boss battles...
