They're in most of our favorate games, providing a momentary escape from the ususal gameplay, or maybe just an excuse to dole out power ups and fancy items. Sometimes they're manditory, other times just for kicks. Some are exciting and amusing, and others make you want to eat your controller. So let's hear about your favorate, and most hated, Mini-games.

My favorates would have to be the chicken feeding Mini-game from Harvest Moon:FOMT, and the horseback archery game from LOZ, OOT. The chicken game was challenging, but fun, and I always got a sense that the chickens might have mauled the harvest sprite if I goofed, which would have made my day. I loved the horseback archery game for the pure reason I was good at it. It's probably because I got so bored on Majora's Mask that I'd spend entire nights riding around on Epona at night shooting Blue Bubbles.

My least favorate would have to be the strange fair game on Chrono Trigger where you had to save your friend from being fried. Talk about wierd, and difficult. Also, the motercycle protect-the-van game on FF7 was pretty bad. Manditory + Confusing + My lack of skills making Cloud veer around like a drunk + Bad graphics making Cloud look like he was smacking enemies with a paper fan = One bitter me.

I enjoyed FFVII motorcycle minigame ( 21800 score cool.gif ), though my favorite minigame was always Triple Triad from FFVIII, yeah I liked the music, and how strategy works and important play on it...the rules also were good, what I hate is the submarine minigame of FFVII, which I don't understand its meaning...20 GP its not worth enough.
Talking about others games, I'll say that Resident evil minigames sure are fun, like Hunk the 4th survivor and Tofu, which was challenging for me...also the Mercenaries from RE3, which was a weird combination of ability and luck ( more luck, than ability....IMO)...and for hating minigames, why not Tekken Force Mode on Tekken 3, which I always hated of its lack of strategy and entertaintment ( actually I consider Tekken as the "minigame" happy.gif, don't get me wrong I know how to play it ....happy.gif I'll think of more later...

I'm not too familiar with them, but I can tentatively claim "worst" for the Wario Ware games. I remember playing a bit into one of the games, and I was wondering..."What the @#$%?! Nintendo is marketing THIS?!"

I dunno about best, though.

I've always liked that one mini-game in Super Mario RPG where ye play a beetle shooting all the shells. I forget what it's called as I haven't had the game in a long time, but I remember the mini-game being funner than the actual game sometimes.

As for the worst, I never really cared for any of the mini-games Chrono Trigger had to offer. They were all fairly short and rather **yawn** easy.

Galsic: I believe it's "Beetle Mania". And yeah, that was a fun game. (I remembered finding this computer version of it a while back, too...)

Also, about CT's racing minigame: a great example of a 'meh' minigame. Neither too much fun (it was separately published in Japan, apparently, by the existence of a racing minigame SNES ROM), nor too difficult. It was rather easy to get past that part of the plot, and since it didn't really add anything to the story, I'd prefer it be rather easy.

Best: Not a minigame per se, but the Ancient Caves in Lufia 2 and 3 were fun. Also, I enjoyed Triple Triad in FF8.

Worst: Tetra Master in FF9, no real point to it besides the tournament and it was hard to understand. But nothing beats Goron dancing in Zelda: Oracle of Ages. It was part of the plot and you had to win TWICE to move on. I'll give you 'too fast' and 'too slow'! Argh!

I love everything about FF7's snowboarding mini-game. I would rather play that than a game entirely dedicated to snowboarding.

Best, in no order:

- Chocobo Hot & Cold - FFIX
- Most of the Mercenary games in the Resident Evils.
- Beetle Mania (har har...punny tongue.gif) - Super Mario RPG
- Hard Dungeon (satisfaction-at-low-levels fun) - Bahamut Lagoon
- "Destroy the car or barrels" minigames - Street Fighter II
- Hunting for food (regardless of how bad I am/was) - The Oregon Trail
- Item Creation (if it counts) - Star Ocean series
- The Colleseum - FFVI
- Festivals - Harvest Moon series
- Select Mario Party games - Mario Party series
- Shell Smash, and other select minigames - Super Mario 64 DS
- Blitzball, surprisingly - FFX
- Snake's vampire dream - Metal Gear Solid 3

Worst, in no order:

- Forced Fishing o' Not Fun - Dark Cloud 2
- FFX-2's Blitzball
- Calm Lands minigames - FFX-2
- Lightning Towers Calibrations - FFX-2
- Chrono Trigger's...stuff
- Butterfly Game From Hell - FFX
- Unholy Chocobo Racing - FFX
- Majority of the Gold Saucer - FFVII
- Motorcycle Slappy Fight and Bad-Reaction-Time-with-Hilarious-Results Snowboarding - FFVII
- Ship Slide Puzzle (I could never do the real ones, either) - FFI
- Gummi Ship garage - Kingdom Hearts
- Anything involving Haulers - Star Ocean 3
- Millenium Puzzles - Wild ARMs 3

That's not all for either list, just all I can think of right now.

Also, I really don't get all the hate for Tetra Master. I found the game pretty fun (in a "Gotta Catch/Collect 'Em All" sorta way) once I figured it out. FYI, the manual explains things much more in-depth than the game does.

I noticed all the hate for Tetra Master here and in other threads, too, and I don't get it, meself. I kind of like it and, at the very least, it makes more sense to me than the card game in FFVIII. Personally, I even find it funner than the Chocobo Hot and Cold as, for me, the fun in that only lasts as long as I find treasures and chocographs.

Are mini-games supposed to play a major role in the story of their respective games? Maybe I'm jest misunderstanding your post, but as far as I can tell, some of the "best" mini-games play jest as much a role in the story as Tetra Master did. In fact, Chocobo Hot and Cold is completely optional. So is Super Mario RPG's Beetle Mania and I love it. In the end, I feel a mini-game isn't necessarily a part of the story, so much as an aside or, perhaps, a diversion from the story. That's the point.

Holy crap, I forgot one of the best minigames of all! Spheda from Dark Cloud 2! That minigame is far better than any golf video game ever conceived, and it helped make a great game awesome.

By the way, do "boss rush" or "boss attack" or "boss challenge" modes count as minigames?

If they do, then I'll add Boss Rush Mode of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance to the list of the best minigames.

(No, the Boss Attack portions of Mega Man Xtreme 2 do NOT count.)

Edit
(...because they sucked.)

FFVIII's Triple Triad, FFVII's Motorcycle mini-game, Chocobo Racing, and the Shooter Coaster game in Gold Saucer. FFX's Blitzball takes a lot of my gameplay hours as well 'cuz it's so fun! FFix's Chocobo Hot & Cold and Tetra Master are my favorites as well.

FFVII's Snowboarding game I never got into, though I do like the submarine. FFX's monster catching was another one I found kinda' pointless. FFVIII's Chocobo mini-game via the pocketstation was useless 'cuz Chocobo's were underutilized in the game and the pocketstation was hard to come by in the U.S.

Best: Choco Hot and Cold
Gunner's Gauntlet
Triple Triad
Item Creation in Star Ocean 2 - I load up my saved game every now and then just to cook stuff and make things. I know it's just a randomized "Put item in, wait 10 seconds, get result" but it's strangely fun.

BAD:
FF7 Submarine - First time playing this, I couldn't figure out how to steer, couldn't find the red sub,and I knew I was going to lose. I had 10 seconds left, and I got mad and threw the controller down. Apparently when it hit the floor, it fired the missle and miraculously sank the red sub. True story.
Any minigame from FFX. Seriously. All bad.
Item Creation in Star Ocean End of Time. How did they mess it up so badly?!?

I was really addicted to Sky Bridge from SMRPG for awhile. If you go special and double or nothing alot it gets real fun and addicting. Blew all my cash on it smile.gif. Mario RPG had a myriad of good mini games as did its sequal.

Lame games? Gotta roll with FF9's card game and FF8's chocobos. Lame to the max.

Good

Chocobo Hot & Cold [FFIX] - Lengthy, worthwhile, challenging...all that.
Mushroom Mix-Up [Mario Party] - Don't deny it; this game rules the roost.
Pickpocketing [SO2] - If you take the time, you can really go to town citizens' loot.
Millenium Puzzles [WA2] - Hard to find, hard to do, but ultimately worth the trouble.
Gunner's Heaven [WA2] - Where any self-proclaimed WA2 god has his showdown.
Triple Triad [FFVIII] - Best video game card game minigame ever. =p
Cop Mode [TestDrive5] - It's like catching real criminals!
Snake v. Monkey [MGS3] - Snake snipes homosapiens. Sweet.
Fishing [Amazon Trail] - Spearfishing = auto-cool
Picture-taking [Amazon Trail] - Also cool, if not more fun than paddling the river.

Bad

Crappy Fair Games [LoD] - Run the conveyer belt? Spot the changes? What?
Gunner's Gauntlet [FFX-2] - Wham, bam, no thanks, ma'am. *puke*
Haulers [SO3] - It took me three and a half hours to find the right track. =/
Tetra Master [FFIX] - Worst video game card game minigame ever. =/
Kimahri's Butterflies [FFX] - Never again. Until next time. Maybe.
Mog House [FFVII] - Barely qualifies as a minigame as it is...so sad.
3-D Battler [FFVII] - Hey everyone, it's a polygon fight!

FAVORITE:

1) This may sound weird, but I pretty much consider the "carrying objects in order to open a door" a mini game in Final Fantasy V. Guido's Cavern had the best for FFV.

2) The Collosseum in FFVI. Though that sucks you can't get your bet item back after winning, but heck, that's excusable.

3) The Tetra Master was awesome. Except I hated the whole "random power" thing on the cards.

4) Triple Triad is a must-play card game even though I hate FFVIII to the pits of Ultimecia. I loved the lower numbers on one side, and higher on another side. Makes good strategy and fun too.

5) I love the Motorcycle Mini Game in FFVII.

6) Snowboarding in FFVII is cool too.. But too bad you can only play as Tifa, Cid, and Cloud.. Well, atleast those three are always my main people!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're forgiven cuz of that Square, oh, you're lucky *devilish grin look*

7) Roller Coaster and Chocobo Hot 'n Cold from FFVII and then FFIX.

8) Chrono Trigger's fair was fun.. Except one mini game I did not like..

HATED:

1) I did not enjoy Chrono Trigger's drinking contest, I tapped the A button so much, I only got 6 out of 8. The timer should've been upped atleast by 5 seconds..

2) The Concentration Mini Game in FFIIj and the 15 Puzzle in FF1. They weren't bad it's just that FF1's take too long and in FFIIj it's hard to get all of 'em. Especially considering that you can only make 3 errors and then you lose..
