Anyone who posts in these forums ought to know that graphics alone cannot make or break a Final Fantasy game. However, I can't help but admire the spellcasting sequences, particularly in the more recent games.

So I thought I'd toss this out there: In your opinion, what's the best looking spell in any Final Fantasy game?

My favorite was Flare in Final Fantasy IX.

I've always enjoyed the simple destruction provided by Dark Holy (FFT), though my enjoyment from that is increased by the accompanying sounds

The original Ultima in 6. Pure magical destruction. Very satisfying.

Second place goes to any of the spells from FFT. Great to see them well rendered in 3D like that.

I agree. Ultima was one of the best spells in a FF game to date. Basically did 9999 damage all the time, and it just LOOKED powerful.

I will go with Flare II, I'M not sure FFT is the only one that has this spell (they renamed it to flare star in most other FFs) But It looks extremely powerful, Dark Holy is a close one happy.gif

I vote for Ultima from FFVI as the best as well. It looks quite impressive considering it is on the SNES. And it looks much better than the Ultima from FFVII, IMO, which resembled green vomit splashing across the screen.

Yeah, I was very dissappointed to see Ultima in 7. Ultima in Tactics was a little...underwhelming, but at least it stuck to something close to the original graphics.

Like I said in a similar topic a while back, FFT's Galaxy Stop. If it counts...

I also really like VI's Flare Star, Ultima and Dread (eyeballs!), among others I can't think of at the moment. IX's version of Flare and X's Holy look nice, too. And Zeromus' Big Bang in IV 'cause of the colorful, epileptic effects.

Call me a minority, but holy always looked really cool to me. FFT's rendition of holy was pretty sweet, but FF4's whistle and smack was pretty damn cool if you ask me.

I'm a huge fan of FF VI Ultima, FF Tactics' Holy and Flare, and FF IX's Shock. Dunno about Shock, it's kind of a brief, simple spell, but I love it.

I think the Holy spells in FF games look real cool. Tactics' Dark Holy, Flare, and Flare II, VIII's Flare, Level 3 spells, and Ultima, and IX's Flare Star, Ultima, and Doomsday are my favorite spells for looks alone. As for summons, Hades from VII, Doomtrain, Diablos, Odin, and Bahamut from VIII, and Bahamut, Odin, and Madeen from IX are cool-lookin' as well.

Alexander from all games (and IX) are my favorite animations (cutscene in IX) as well.

The best-looking Ultima was from FFVII, also I admire Safer Sephirot's Super Nova, if it counts, of course.

For spells you can cast, I vote Ultima from FFVI
For enemy spells, I vote Sephiroth's Super Nova
For summons, I vote Knights of the Round

This probably goes off topic, but for abilities, I choose Bum Rush

Lord knows I'd pick Super Nova (FFVII) for my favorite if I could, but I've never been blown away by a more majestic, more awe-inspiring spell than All-Ultima. For as long as I play, Flare 2 and Galaxy Stop will take a backseat to that one.

Ultima and northern (or southern?) cross from FFT and and arc from FF9 was kinda cool but when it did the power rangerish transformation 6 times in a row the novilty wore of real quick.

Off the top of my head, FFVIII's Meltdown. It's a huge laser that melts the skin off the enemies for crying out loud.

I'd have to go with Ultima from FF6 because of it's looking powerful when casting, and the added effects the Final Fantasy Anthology gives it.

I have to amend my previous and say that Great Attractor (FFVIII) is in second place, now. I had completely forgot about it, what with FFVIII being rather boring but GFX-impressive, and it came down to the last battle series in the game and I got that pulled on me. It's Grand Cross (IX) on muscle enhancers, it is.

Bolt FFVII

Simple, concise, to the point. sadly it is the primary spell.I always felt it should have been the animation for Bolt 3, just hit all enemies on the field.

Fire 3 from FFI ( Dawn of Souls or Origins version people ) It's just awesome, this itty-bitty fireball hits the ground...

BOOOOM! It erupts into a HUGE dome of fire!and it's pretty and shiny, no swords though.

For a Black Magic spell, either FFVI's Ultima (for the record, this is NOT the original, that was in FFII) (mainly because it's a big blue ball of banishment), or Flare Star (it's funny to look at). Nuke in FFIV had a nice sound effect.

For a White Magic Spell, I'd have to say FFIX's Curaga. Most of the spells had the best animation in FFIX I always believe.

For a Summon, I enjoy Quetzalcoatl's animation (even though I hate FFVIII). -CSM
