My answer to that would be: If you want.
The PSX version has worse gameplay IMO (the game laggs while certain attacks are in progress IE: Meteor, Fire Dance, and many others) the menu screen takes an extra 6 seconds to load (as opposed to half a second), and nothing big has actually been changed. Things such as renaming certain items (Fenix Down -> PheonixDown) and uncensoring espers/enemies (Starlet, Goddess and Siren come to mind) are bonuses as well as fixing the Sketch Bug. Also, the Merit Award can no longer allow characters to equip the Atma Weapon, and Gau can't equip it at all. The greatest downside is the lack of sound quality. Major Plus sides to the PSX versions is the bonus section containing Artwork galleries (but I think it was artwork for the CG animations - haven't check in awhile), CG Movies, a Lore guide, Esper guide, and Colleseum guide (nothing you can't get from here at CoN in more depth), and a 'completion' rating in the game that allows you to see how far you got with each individual character. (100% is Level 99 with all spells learned, including All lores/rages/swrdtech/dances/blitzes/tools earned/collected/learned.) Mainly, its up to you. I personally would purchase the pack to get FF5, but the FF6, besides being able to be saved to your memory card as opposed to the 3-slots in the catridge, is not all that great. FF5, on the other hand, unless you understand Japanese, is impossible to get on a console otherwise. And there's my 10 cents. -------------------- "A little tight, but the price was right" - Locke "Oh, what a Fuddy Duddy" - Relm "..." - Shadow "I'm a General, not some love starved twit" - Celes "Although Edgar showers his attention on the ladies, most are smart enough to pay him no attention. No, the in-game graphics are basically a direct port from the SNES ones. Also, I found the music sounds slightly off, which may not matter to some, but mattered a lot to me. The lag times between battles were quite annoying, as well. I wouldn't bother with Anthology, as all the extra material (FMVs, pictures, etc) you can find on the web.

If you already have the SNES edition, there is really no need for buying Anthology to get the PS version. While the load times aren't that bad (compared to the horrible loading times in the Playstation Chrono Trigger), it goes annoying.

The problem with the snes version is that the save battery will die , erasing your saves and your ability to save. the psx saves to a memory card, which the save battery wont die out for a little while now.

I traded the SNES version for the PSX version because the carts die eventually, and so will my system. Updating seemed like a good way to keep the game alive longer.
Unfortunately, the SNES plays better. The load times aren't enourmous, and you can glitch it. Hey, glitching is fun. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Quote (Smackthedog @ 14th August 2005 21:30) Ahhh... so i bet it's the same way for ff4, right? Actually, I highly recommend getting the Chronicles version of FF4. Don't bother with Chrono Trigger -- the load times are shameful -- but FF4's been completely retranslated, and a good thing too. It's also no longer the easytype version we dumb Westerners got with the FFII cart -- there're all sorts of new abilities, items, etc. The sound and music also seemed fine to me. I think Chronicles FF4 is the only one of that group (Anthology 5 and 6, Chronicles CT) that's actually worth paying for. This post has been edited by L. Quote (Smackthedog @ 14th August 2005 21:48) ![]() Okay. So the game we got in 1992, "Final Fantasy II" for the Super Nintendo, with the red label and the sword in place of the "T"? That was actually the translated "Easytype" version that Square had released in Japan meant for, frankly, young children. It was easier, for one thing, but there was also far less complexity. For instance, in the Easytype, all status ailments can be fixed with a "heal," but the Hardtype has the items we're all familiar with, like Maiden's Kiss, Echo Screen, etc. They also took out a lot of the characters' abilities. Dark Knight Cecil has a pretty dang awesome Dark Wave attack that hits all enemies for a decent amount of damage, but drains his HP. Rosa can "Pray," which sometimes heals the party some for no MP. Yang can "Build Up," doubling the physical damage he does, and so forth. Chronicles FF4 is the Hardtype. SNES "Final Fantasy II" is the Easytype. -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Eternal Sleep, Track 1-1: The Blue Planet |

FF4 on the U.S. snes was watered down
to make it easier therefore people will refer to it as easytype and when it came back out for the PSX in the chronicles pack it had the origonal difficulty put back into effect which is the only version I've played I missed out on ffiv on the snes and as for FFvi on the psx it's entirely up to you Edit looking back at this post it seems entirely irrelevant, so to post something on topic. I prefer FFVI on the snes, for the simple reason i was more comfortable playing with the snes controller (i.e. I found blitzes easier to do with that controller.) They're not the same game, no, but near enough for explanation purposes. And I know there's no Hardtype; that was just to differentiate it from the Easytype.
I get my info from Subaru. In any case, get the Chronicles version, is my advice. -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Eternal Sleep, Track 1-1: The Blue Planet |

Well, I'll say you should buy FF anthologies version, just for collection...besides it got a complete bestiary section, in which you can you see, enemy level, weakness, what elements absorb, and accurate information. I recommend it, the load times aren't that bad ....compared the extra stuff you can get, that is.

Ye got lots to think about before grabbing the PS version. First off, FFV comes with it and from what I hear, while it has an awesome job system, the story and the characters are pretty abyssmal. As much as I'd like to experience the job system, I personally need a good story and decent characters to keep me interest. I also heard that the PS soundtrack is a butchered version of the original, blah...
I love the soundtrack of FF6 and I'm scared to find what the rerelease team did to it. And what kinds of extra stuff do ye get from the package, anyway? Is it the kind of crap ye can find in a player's guide or anywhere in the net? Oh, and I don't like loading times... So there ye have it, heh. -------------------- |

In my opinion, the movies don't matter, and I almost never use Sketch anyways. I've always disliked load times (which didn't exist on the original cartridges), and my enjoyment of the game is strongly influenced by music. So, no, it's a slightly-lower-quality version of the same (SNES, albeit) game you already have.
I'd recommend against buying Anthologies. (The other main reason is that FFV sucks on that version. If you want to play it, get yourself an emu and a fan-translated rom. I strongly recommend against the PS version of that because you'll end up hating the game.) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I'm with GMH. Before Anthology came out, everyone I knew who had played FF5 (the fan-translated rom, for most) loved it or at least liked it. Now, the majority hates it, and I can see why. The translation is atrocious and the load times are horrid. Steer clear of Anthology or you'll bear the Mark of the Beast.

After going to that link Shinryu posted, I was amazed at how outstandingly cool Zeromus looked..
Anyways, on to FFVI. I think you should download the rom and any snes emulator and play it on your computer. In addition to saving, on emulators you can perform savestates, which enables you to save anytime, anywhere, and they will never die or become deleted unless if you want to.. |

Personally, I would just stick with SNES. My reason being that your SNES games can't get scratches and they are less expensive and it's the exact same game except it's on PS, but if you want go right ahead. ^_^

Quote (FF Master) they are less expensive Well, it's not so much a question of cost between getting the two versions, but keep in mind that these days, an FFIII cartridge will sell for a darn lot, and you'll likely only find stuff like that on places like eBay. Referring back to Locke_Cole's post (the second in this thread), I don't really see uncensoring of the enemies to be much of a plus. Quote (Locke_Cole) Also, the Merit Award can no longer allow characters to equip the Atma Weapon, and Gau can't equip it at all. I'd say that's a downside. A lot of fun strategies were based on things like Gau equipping the Tempest.
