APPROACHING "THEORETICAL" THREAD
Im on a thread roll here. This topic basically answers the big question "What if..." when you are asked it (ill show an example later as my #1 post) Your answer does not have to be perfect or exactl what will happen, but only some result that is likely to happen or whatever the question-asker expects. For example (an actual example), if i ask "what happens if i jump off a cliff with a possibly faulty parachute", i would expect the answer to be "there is no parachute and you die". if someone else gives another answer which is just as likely though, like "you actually have a parachute" or "you roll onto the ground and simply break your leg", the q-asker can decide the best answer and explain why he chose the answer he did and why not the others. Be warned q-askers, give your best judgement when accepting answers, and be neutral...dont give someone the answer just because they are your friend, but because they gave the best answer. for the first post, i would like to ask the question "what if the core of a tall evergreen tree suddenly became superheated to a temperature of 500 degrees farenheit?" NOTE--Water boils at an approxamate temperature of around 212-- Tell me if a thread like this already exists----haven't been here for a while -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. well how fast do you mean by suddenly
if it's instantaneous i'd say the tree would blow up but if its greadual the tree could burn however i feel the tree would melt because you didn't say how fast the rate "suddenly" is -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Footbigmike is closest...
Sorry for not being specific, and ill try to correct that in the future. true the tree would spontaneously combust, that was my answer, but the water in the tree would also start to heat up and as the tree explodes, boiling water would also go flying out. sorry mike, butcloudstrife510 hit the nail closest first, despite your answer also being true. take it cloud This post has been edited by DrkMagimaster282 on 1st August 2005 16:07 -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. Wait, so this thread is a "guess what I'm thinking" thread? So, like a quiz, but dumber because there's no right answer?

this is almost like that, but closer to a "what might happen most likely if..." thread.
i guess it is a little like a guess what im thinking thread, but is still not what is expected (sorry on my last post's response, i meant for cloud strife, not bigfootmike, to take the next hypothetical question.) -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. I think it would be more fun if people could also make up hilarious fake ideas and if you liked one of those best, you could pick one and the turn would then go to them. But that's just me.

@karasuman, the last part of my post was sarcasm, I'll probably post in this thread a lot, it seems like an okay idea (assuming it doesn't degenerate into spam).

Quote (Silverlance @ 1st August 2005 19:30) Sigh... what if people started posting intelligent threads? ![]() That WAS a what-if question. ![]() But seriously, I'm not sure I understand the point of this. Basically we're supposed to ask a what-if question that everyone has heard the answer to, and after enough posts, point out why everyone is wrong by making up an entirely unexpected answer? Giving others a hint or something wouldn't hurt. Unless this is a game where nobody wins and we all just feel really clever for being able to "outsmart" (quotes intentional) others... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

The egg would either roll north due to being attracted to the south poll or...
it would roll 'downwards' due to gravity. And Spiffyness, that was last comment was very funny. ![]() -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

Let the moderator clarify please...
These "what if..." questions can be simple theoretical questions like the rooster-egg question earlier (yes, you must think like a smart @$$ sometimes) These questions can also involve anomalies in space (black/white holes, sun exploding situations, etc), nature (like my example), or ANY subject in the known or unknown world. I will be glad to answer any future questions at all if anyone is still confused. (good start-off cloud-strife) Moderator Edit You are in no way a moderator of anything. Don't make me close this thread just out of spite for what really isn't much of a topic. -R51 This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 3rd August 2005 10:17 -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. unfortunately, unless you are a photon, it is completely impossible for you to travel at c. such a hypothetical question is entirely useless. what would happen when you got very, very close to c is that you would undergo extreme lorentz contraction [according to c*l0/(c+v)] and doppler signal frequency propagation shift [according to c*f0/(c+v)] from the point of view of any outside observers, and you would gain real mass according to m0*c^2/sqrt(1-(v/c)^2). and you would probably be torn apart by frictional forces long before you got there.

well basically going the spped of light you probably wouldn't see where you were going, so you would definately crash into something because human reflexes aren't profficient enough to handle the speed of light
also as stated above you could be torn apart, or as einstein believed you would reduce to nothing (but you said you had achieved the ability to travel the speed of light sp this cannot be true) and time would stop but time would stop only while you are maintaining light speed so basically you would have finally gotten the ability to beat the clock but you would probably plow youself into something making it not worth the time* ![]() and effort This post has been edited by Cloud_Strife510 on 3rd August 2005 20:42 -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

At the speed of light, maybe you can travel through time, but due to a paradox of laws of physics...maybe all existence would be denied...time and space would be one. But...

Ok, I'll answer this just before I go to bed.
I love all of your answers, especially the Elvis one. ![]() But as you can imagine Goz explained it perfectly, to be honest and got what I was basically looking for, which is... you would die, lol (and he pointed this out first of course). And he made the interesting point that you would gain mass, etc. ![]() I like the travelling through time Moglv99, very nice, I was wondering if anyone would say something like that. Anyway, over to you Goz! I wonder if I will understand what you say, lol. I didn't take advanced maths or A level physics (or whatever you equivalent might be). ![]() This post has been edited by fatman on 4th August 2005 00:03 -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

i have a tau (or any particle, to be certain)-resonant string confined in a box.
what if i continually shrink the box down to near size 0, then finally shrink the box *to* size 0 (yes, it's impossible to have a size 0 box, but for argument's sake)? |
