I think there is some sort of mistake in the game when Celes first goes to Albrook in the World of Ruin. The towns people tell her that she's the "spittin image of a man who was recently wondering here".

I always thought this was odd since they are basically saying that she looks like a man. I'm assuming they are referring to Sabin or Edgar.

I'm guessing these remarks are really meant to be talking to Sabin about his twin brother Edgar. The FF VI programmers maybe changed the plot a little, but never the dialogue in Albrook.

Well, they're both blonde, and I assume don't look as depressed as everyone else. I'm assuming the person meant act like or talk like, rather than look like. Maybe they should have translated it as "resemble" rather than "look like", since resemble can mean other things?

That's a good theory, though, maybe Edgar was originally supposed to be the one left on the island.

I believe he meant that they both still had a look of hope about them, that they mirrored each other in their attitude toward the future and that something about how they appeared at the time gave it away (IIRC, the previous line is something like "You... the sparkle in your eye"). In the WOR, that would really stand out, no matter how intangible it may seem to us.

Yeah, I agree. Think about it: You just woke up from a year-long coma, meanwhile the entire planet has just suffered some kind of nuclear-winter-like destruction. Most people alive have had to watch their loved ones suffer and die, that is if they had any loved ones to survive the initial catastrophe. Depending on when you go there (likely your first stop but not necessarily), you either know or hope that some of your closest friends (a surrogate family, since Celes has no real relatives mentioned in game) have survived the apocalyptic episode. So yes, a person who isn't deeply depressed would stand out under such circumstances.

It's not just the death and the loss that's depressing people - they're generally resilient enough to deal with that, and get over it to help build their world back up. What people AREN'T able to cope with is the utter lack of a future with hope, which is exactly what they have in the WoR. It's not that the world is ruined - it's that the world keeps getting more ruined as Kefka fires down bolts of judgement and causes unnatural destruction daily - it's a world from your worst nightmares that keeps getting worse It's hard to be hopeful if you don't understand why it happened, let alone what force might possibly be able to stop it.

I'm more in support of the "it was meant for after you get Sabin" since you can skip Albrook and go straight to the town where you find Sabin, right? (no one ever does) Referring to Gerad.

That or it's because she and Sabin are both blondes and there aren't many blondes in the game sprite selection, really?

I believe it was also supposed to refer to her "fighting spirit." Wonky translation, I daresay. According to my Sky Render translation, if you have Edgar in your party, the NPC says:

"Hmm? You...
Oh, I'm sorry.
You just remind me somehow of a Monk who came by here a while back, looking for someone...
I seem to recall that he said he was going north to Tsen, and left town."

If it's just Celes, he says:

"Say, that sparkle in your eye...
A Monk came to this town recently, and he had the same sort of sparkle..."

Yes, they're comparing "that sparkle in [their] eye", as both her and Sabin had it. I always thought that was rather obvious. The translation just isn't as clear there as it could be.

Sabin, Edgar, and Celes all use the same generic Sprite.

Actually, they don't. Square's artists have two different basic sprites: male sprites and female sprites. The most visible difference is in the face: male sprites have a U-shaped chin and female sprites have a V-shaped chin. Female sprites also have an extra white pixel in their eyes over male sprites. Male sprites also use an extra set of pixels around their hands, giving them a more masculine look and feel.

They do use the same palette though.

Umm, In the original FF6 or 3 (SNES) That got me too, but I thought that was used to mean that Celes looked like Maria the opera singer, but now that I think about it I really don't know....

Like said though, I'm positive it was meant to sound like Celes has the same sparkle in her eye that reminded the towns person of someone else with similar spirit (sabin, of course).

yeah, it could be that it was meant for after you get Sabin, or how they react to the end of the world...
but what if, JUST WHAT IF.....Celes is a long lost sister to both of them? hmmmm?
we never know where she is from......
