Believe it or not, playing piano blindfolded isn't as hard as, say, throwing knives blindfolded. Not to say that I can play many pieces blindfolded, but this feels like one of those "impossible talents" that I just don't feel is impossible enough for me to need to sell my undying love and adoration to. It might be an easier-said-than-done situation, but I'm going to stay only mildly impressed by this guy. But he is very good at playing the piano, blindfolded or not, and I'm not going to take any of that away from him. Plus he's asian so he gets a head start without me even hearing him play.

Playing the piano blindfolded can be easy. All you have to do is memorize the keys and the sheet of music. But you cant be not impressed with this guy, because being able to play the piano music he does can be pretty hard.

Not to belittle your admiration, but I've been playing the piano for some 14 years now, and I make my own (really darn complicated) transcriptions of videogame music, and I can play the piano in the dark as well, provided that I know the music well enough. So, playing videogame music on the piano blindfolded isn't that hard. Therefore, it's not like his act is that amazing; it's definitely a talent, no doubt, though, and he deserves credit for having the ability to play the piano that well and having the initiative to transcribe videogame music (which is a biggie for us videogame music junkies out there). I've heard a bit of his stuff, and it's okay, although I maintain that my arrangements are harder, but more musically faithful to the original version.

However, I will admit that that person has done a better job at advertising himself online than I have (I have basically none, but it's not like I've been trying, either).

I've seen the blindfolded pianist before, on gprime.net I think, and he's pretty good. I think he also did some Disney music as well as gaming tunes, but his Mario Bros. arrangement is the reason to check him out.

And yes, playing musical instruments blindfolded isn't as difficult as it sounds. It's tougher with instruments that require a larger range of muscle memory, like a marimba or a large drum rack, but for piano it's quite manageable by most anyone experienced enough.

He actually spammed a good number of the staff a while back, requesting that we add him as a link because he was going to someday be very very famous, or something like that. I tried to find the email, or chat logs where we discussed it today, but to no avail. Suffice it to say that his "I'm incredibly impressive" attitude did not win him friends here. I think Neal might have actually emailed back and forth with him a couple times, IIRC.

Anyway, since he seems like the type who would Google for himself on a regular basis, hi to you when you find this.

Haha, that's great. Yeah, playing piano blindfolded/in the dark isn't all that hard, but I will admit that he's still pretty darn good at the piano. His arrangements are pretty tough, though, and they're definately well written, and I think THAT'S harder than actually playing the stuff.

I'll give him a thumbs-up, but he's not THAT super-awesome like he obviously thinks he is. sleep.gif

That's pretty neat. I always like hearing familiar songs from video games in different mediums.

As everyone else has said, playing blindfolded isn't hard. A pianist doesn't look at her hands while she's playing if she has to read the music, and by the time she doesn't have to read the music, she shouldn't have to look at her hands, either. The biggest hurdle to overcome is trusting one's hands to know the piece; I never have a problem until I start thinking about it too much.

By the way, you can find a great deal of video game sheet music on the web. Much of it is scanned from published volumes, but some pieces are independently arranged and posted. A lot of the arrangements are very good, and they come in a variety of difficulty levels. It may not be quite like the guy in the link, but it's fun. smile.gif

Psh. That's nothing. I can play my flute in the darkness. Heck, I can even put it together!
...Okay, so they're not the same thing. But still!

Pretty cool stuff, though. Though to be honest, I think he's hindering himself by limiting himself to only video game music. I mean, there's a whole world of music!
