Grand Theft Auto 3 was the only GTA game that managed to impress me. The first two were just plain crap, Vice City just a step below 3, and San Andreas just felt like the same thing as 3 and Vice City. Never been a huge fan of the series.

It could be really addictive and make you aggressive! So is Coca-Cola. And you can get wierder ideas by watching the news. I played GTA, the orginal, when I was 10 (Aren't I naughty?). To this date, I have not brutally gunned anyone down becuase of it. Why is it whilst I have been playing violent games since eight or so, watching violent movies since about four, I am not a psychopathic nutter? Becuase my parents raised me the right way. They made sure I was to blame if I did anything wrong. They made sure I knew real from fiction. Is it also becuase I know the effects of violence thorugh the experiences of others? Is it becuase I was exposed to them early on and very clearly told what was wrong and right, real and fake? You do not attack a problem by making it worse, you nip it in the bud small and attack the roots. Society today is too ready to give a knee-jerk and attack a scapegoat rather than committ to actually eradicating the small problem. Children need to be properly educated on things, not told for three seconds 'it's bad' then exposed to the bad things for hours without beign reminded they're bad. And thats the trouble. Too many people won't supervise their kids, won't remind them of whats right and wrong. You drill in into them. Entertainment should be used as education to prevent it becoming a handy thing to balme for any crimes the child goes on to commit. There IS a thing as too much violence, but the trouble may be, the violence children are exposed to is not controlled. You don't let kids drink a gallon of coca-cola, do you? No, you ration it, remind them it's bad for them in excess. It's okay in small doses, but if you don't remind them why it's wrong to commit genocide through their joypad, you are more to blame than the game. And anyway, these things are never MEANT for kids. Age restrictions that are actually enforced should be the case. In the UK, stores can be prosecuted for selling 18-rated items to under 18's. If there's deterrent in stopping stores selling such items to minors, and then it comes down to parential consent, it's the parent's descion, but of course, that's too logical. And in the event that someone should do effectivley the same as with alcohol and cigarettes (but not nearly as bad), and ask someone else to get it for them without parential consent, or somehow get hold of them, punish the children and whoever got it for them without parential consent. Restrictions are better than bans when it's really only dangerous if you do it too much. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Quote (Suik_O_Den_Genso @ 26th July 2005 09:07) Its really not good to play GTA when your under 18 years old! Sometimes I wonder if people even know what an ESRB rating is. Sometimes I think not. ![]() What's to blame isn't the game, it's the people who let kids play despite clear indications that the game is not suitable nor even acceptable for children under 18. You wouldn't let your kid rent a porno, would you? Of course, the fact remains that the only effect it'll have is desensitising them. Show a kid enough porn and he won't laugh and point at nude people anymore. He'll accept it as it is. Wether it affects him down the road or not is fully dependant on the parents' involvement. Same goes with violent games. Heck, I used to play mortal kombat and describe excitedly in gory details the fatalities to my parents. And, aside from the occasional virgin sacrifice to the Dark Ones, I've become a productive and sane member of society and lead a normal life. If a mere game can cause a kid to grab their parent's gun and go on a shooting spree, the game isn't to blame: if fiction can dictate someone's actions, somewhere along their upbringing their parents never had them walk off the roof of the house telling them they could fly if they pretend gravity doesn't exist. Sure proved me wrong about cartoon physics... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I think the games are trash, but fun trash. I was offended by every other thing in Vice City, but I kept it up. I haven't played San Andreas (and won't, until I can buy it cheaper than $40), and GTA III is too hard for me without an internal map.
I think the recent business about the game ratings are ridiculous. You'd think Congress had more important things to spend their time on than video game content. San Andreas was already rated for 17+, and given the amount of cheating, hacking, etc. it takes to access the content everyone's in an uproar about, this whole business seems like sneaking into someone house to watch them shower and then filing charges for indecent exposure. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |
