I'm not familiar with any of his work outside of Final Fantasy games, but based on those alone, I am a HUGE fan of his thumbup.gif !

Pshh... Uematsu fans? On a Final Fantasy site? OF COURSE NOT! How could anyone like the composer who made songs like Terra's theme or One Winged Angel? Those songs are TERRIBLE! Why would anyone like Nobuo Uematsu?

Yasunori Mitsuda's work ranks slightly higher than Nobuo's for me. Chrono Cross' score was outright memorable, start to finish, but most FFs left me feeling only mildly impressed. The FF9 score was the one that impressed me least, and I can't say any songs stood out.

Ironically, FF8 is the one that held my interest the most.

There's no doubt that Nobuo is great, but a lot of his fame comes from working on such a widely-recognized title as Final Fantasy. Mizuta (of Parasite Eve 2 fame) is a god at composing ambiant-sounding music, and Yoko Shimomura (Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts (IIRC)) is the only artist which ranks as high as Yasunori on my list. Nobuo is just a notch under these three.

I'm a fan of Uematsu and Mitsuda, but one you shouldn't overlook is Motoi Sakuraba. He's done very nearly all of the soundtracks for Wolf Team, Tri-Ace, and the Tales studio (granted, Tales studio's only done one game thus far), as well as all kinds of other spot-work all over the place (including the Golden Sun series and the Mario Golf series). I also have a bit of a soft spot for one of the very few female Japanese game soundtrack composers, Michiru Yamane, who was the primary composer for several Castlevania games after the Kukeiha Club disbanded (most notably Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow). She also was the primary composer for Suikoden III, another solid soundtrack.
Edit
Oh, and for those who don't know, Wolf Team did the first three Tales games, Tri-Ace has done all of the Star Ocean games as well as Valkyrie Profile, and Tales Studio did Tales of Symphonia.

My favorite video game music composers are:
1. Nobuo Uematsu (worked on FF series, Chrono Trigger, et al.)
2. Yoko Shimomura (worked on Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts, et al.)
3. Kenji Yamamoto (worked on Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, et al.)
3. Yasunori Mitsuda (worked on Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, et al.)

In my opinion, Uematsu is better at composing music that can both function in-game and stand alone well, while Mitsuda is better at composing atmosphere/situation/emotion-driven music, which is feels more impressive in-game but is less impressive standing alone. This explains why my admiration for FFVI's soundtrack has lasted longer and with greater magnitude than my admiration for CT's soundtrack (although both are two of the best ever).

I don't know too much about Shimomura, but I rate her high partly because I've heard a bit of the KH soundtrack, but mostly because of her impressive SMRPG soundtrack.

I like Yamamoto for his SM, MF, and MZM soundtracks, but not really the MP series.

So yes, I am quite a huge fan of Uematsu. Among my favorite soundtracks:

1. FFVI
2. FFVII
3. FFV

My favorite tracks include:
The Decisive Battle (FFV)
Cait Sith's Theme (FFVII)
Setzer's Theme (FFVI)
Sealed Door (Belthasar's Theme) (Chrono Trigger)
Fiddle de Chocobo (FFVII)
Electric de Chocobo (FFVII)
Aloha de Chocobo (FFIX)
Fight 2 (Boss Battle) (FFIV)
Melody of Lute (Edward/Gilbert's Theme) (FFIV)
Shadow's Theme (FFVI)
Gogo's Theme (FFVI)
Moogle's Theme (FFIX)
boss battle (FFIII)
The Evil Lord Exdeath (FFV)
Prelude of Empty Skies (FFV)
Dear Friends (FFV)
The Prelude (Crystal Theme) (FFIV, FFV, FFVII game over)
town theme (FFII)

Yeah, Mitsuda is DA MAN! I can never really decide whether I like Uematsu or Mitsuda better, but they're definately the top two. Nobuo has been around a LOT longer, and he's still writing great stuff, but Mitsuda has a much smaller record, but so far all of his stuff is SLIGHTLY better than Uematsu, with the exception of Chrono Cross, which is WAAAAAY better. If Mitsuda keeps it up, he'll definately surpass Uematsu, but I don't know if he CAN keep it up.

Also, Uematsu's music is always big, sweeping orchestral pieces, while Mitsuda's BEST tracks are the more stylized ones, (like June Mermaid from Xenogears, or ALL of Chrono Cross) although he does the big movie-esque scores as well.

Actually, both FFV and FFVI have battle themes with the title "The Decisive Battle" and "The Fierce Battle".

Nobuo Uematsu is my favorite video game music composer. FFVI featured his best pieces, IMO, one of the reasons FFVI is such a memorable game. He did a great job on FFVII, FFV, and FFI as well, though those games didn't feature his best work, IMO.
Yasunori Mitsuda is also a great composer as well. I really liked Chrono Cross' music as well as Chrono Trigger's music. The soundtracks in those games were memorable and fit the games well.
