I'm actually quite suprised that you (the staff) do not have these two up for selection- Squall and Onion Kid. These guys popped up on the PSX game select screen every once in a blue moon. Sorry if the sprites are small.

I'd like to comment on this suggestion: I personally do not think it really merits an entire set of avatars, for what was essentially nothing more than a tiny bit of fan service which some people may have even been totally unaware of the existence of.

I think it's certainly interesting that these inserts were made, but that’s really for another topic, and probably not a very good one, but nonetheless, the hassle and effort to add even just 2 more avatars to what has been stated by the staff many times before to already be a large and expansive selection of avatars.

However, in defence of the idea, making the sprites of a larger size is not a complicated task and can be performed quite simply in even MS paint via using the stretch/skew tool to expand the sprite by 200% in both ways, and then, if it is needed, selecting the black background on the GIF and then the eraser tool, and right clicking to rub out the entire black background, or if the second colour is set to a colour other than white, replace it with that colour. Sprite quality appears to be on a par with all the other FF6 sprites after doing this, but don't quote me on that as I don't know what I'm doing.

Not that that's ever stopped me before, but hey. wacko.gif

In further defence of the idea, R51 has stated before that:
Quote
If you want more avatars, you should have a good reason for wanting the ones you want BEFORE you post, and you should have a source for the avatars in mind. We're not interested in making avatars for you, and we're not interested in much of anything that requires us to do work that doesn't help the site.

Which, in this case, certainly meets the requirements. You do have a good reason, and it's proven that you have the source for the avatars and even (unless on a mac or don't have paint, then I'm afraid I haven't got a clue!) the ability to actually create the avatars, there doesn't really seem to be much reason in this one not going through other than the fact that it's a somewhat obscure piece of nod-and-wink-to-other-games only found in a particular version and sometimes not even known by people who have that version. In even further defence of that it could be explained in the hypothetical topic announcing the new avatars at the possible time the avatars are uploaded, or even explained by the gallery subsection the avatar's could be placed in: It could possibly be named 'Final Fantasy 6 PSX Main Menu Sprites' if a new sub-gallery was able or required/worthwhile to be made.

So whilst I don't think it's major enough to be done, it would be simple enough, at least in getting avatar-quality images available, to be done, but the obvious snag is, I have no idea if it's at all easy to upload the avatars to the avatar gallery, and nor is it likely that anyone but the staff themselves can say if it is truly possible or worthwhile to do so. And really, that’s the only actual stumbling block that I can find with the idea: Staff may not have the time to get it uploaded right now, but it is entirely possible that it could be put onto the backburner until such times as the staff have the time

Still, I'm just someone who doesn't really know what I'm talking about, but that's my comment on this suggestion, and I hope these hypothetical and contradictory what-ifs and ramblings helpful to the suggestion and to the staff. biggrin.gif

Edit
Drat, just though of something else. The editing of the animated avatars is obviously not possible in paint, and may be a potential stumbling block, but one I'm, sure more users experienced and/or better equipped in the editing of sprites and images in general may know a way around. In addition, the permission of the adminstrator/owner of the site that you used to link to as an example of the sprites to use the images from his/her site as a basis for these theoretical new avatar's can't hurt as the worst that can happen is that nothing happens.

Figured I'd give resizing these guys a go. Did some touching up while I was at it, too.

Feel free to use them as you see fit, andy. If ever CoN changes its policy to allow custom avatars, well, there ya go. smile.gif

Actually, that would be pretty interesting. I don't think I'd be using the ones Silverlance did, since after the touching up they look nothing like the ones in the game and would therefore not actually fit into the gallery.

I'm not sure when/if anyone will get to this, though, so don't get your hopes up too much. If anyone else wants to do it, I'll consider adding them if they match the existing ones in size and format.

Edit
And don't be too surprised that we (the staff) don't have them - as Del pointed out, we don't concern ourselves too much with avatars since we have several hundred already and we prefer to try to work on the actual site.

I may be mistaken, but didn't the PSX FF5 also have some kind of similar fan service with sprites of Cloud?
I Haven't actually played the PSX versions of those games so I'm not sure...

I think that Cloud was an extra on the Main Menu in FF5, yes. I've never seen him though.

*Shrugs* No biggie, really. Doesn't take too long to make 'em the same size other sprites use.

Transparency is messed on all but the last of those.

Foward facing versions of both will be added shortly, and that'll be it - we have way, way too many FF6 avatars ATM.

As if it mattered, quite frankly. wink.gif Most avatars (if not all of them) don't use transparency, such as, well, mine for instance. Those blended pixels just don't cut it, so it'd look horrible if transparent.

Use as you see fit. They're not my sprites, and they don't interest me as an avatar either, so y'know, whatever. smile.gif

On the contrary, every field/battle sprite avatar on the site uses palette transparency. Try a dark skin like Digi/CoN3 and it's obvious where transparency is in use, and where it is messed up on the above sprites.

What would look horrible is if all our sprites had a big chunky white outline.

Added now, anyway.

[Edit 26 Oct: Just noticed I said CoN5 instead of CoN3 there for some reason...]

Sure, but I'm not the one you should take this stuff up with. I don't decide which sprites make it into the avatar section or not. (And considering the amount we already have here, I think it's safe to assume they'd better be good for the mods to accept them.)
