I've been working on a sort of Tabletop version of FFT because my friends and I wanted to extend the fun beyond what the games contained.
I was just wondering if anyone else had tried anything like this in the past or heard about the idea before. I'm pretty much just wondering if anyone had suggestions.

well, I personally have created a tactics tabletop game, it's a d20 system. I based it loosely off of 3ed dungeons and dragons.

Well, maybe you could take some GW mini's and figures and hijack their rules, suitably altered, to grant you FFT? Like, say, Mordhiem from specialist games, and then change the magic about and change a few other rules. Or perhaps even heavily altered Warhammer 40,000 Kill-Team rules.

If, however, like many people, you have a deep hatred for GW due to the fact they keep raising prices or have never even heard of them, maybe you could try and use some other gaming system made by another company.

Oh well, thats about all I can think possible to do. This is a pretty good idea, BTW.

Why not simply use the original in-game mechanics?

I'm with Silverlance. If you look at the BGM guide, you could probably modify the formulas to your own tabletop. It might be overwhelming, but it could be done; might be easier that way, too.

I am currently running a FFT game with my D&D buddies. XD
I used a d20 system, and the BMG. I used some formulae, but as it turns out, players dont wanna use a calculator. Instead, it works like this for me:

Each weapon has a set damage (ala D&D). When you score a hit, you roll that damage, and add your entire PA to the damage roll. Then, for every 10 points of PA you have, you get an extra attack. (Example: 20 PA=3 attacks).

Magic is similar. Each spell has a set damage. After you roll it, you roll an addition die for each point of MA you have. (Example: Fira does 4d6, say. Then with 5 MA, you add 5d4 to that.)

Now, for evade, I use the BMG "sorta." See, you have different evade on your character sheet. I have a spot on them for front, side, and back evades, plus magic evade from any side.

Front Evade=Shield P.Evade+Class P.Evade+Mantle P.Evade
Side Evade=Shield P.Evade+Mantle P.Evade
Back Evade=Mantle Evade
Magic Evade=Mantle M.Evade+Shield M.Evade
(Might also have Weapon Evade for front if Weapon Guard is equiped)

Now, to hit that person, you have to roll a percent higher than the percent listed based on the location you attack from. Also, if you roll a 95% or higher, it is a critical, as the BMG says.

So thats a basic overview of my system. Its working out great, so give it a try if ya want. If you want more info on how I run it, post here asking and I'll help ya out.

Later.

This is an interesting concept. I can see a D20 system working well for this. Perhaps you could glean some ideas from the Warcraft D20 to help if you run out of system ideas?

I dunno if you're talking to me or the topic creator, but I'll assume it's me. biggrin.gif

I am currently running the game, but any new ideas can be drafted into a 2.0 or something, as my D&D gruop enjoys it, so I plan to do another campaign with it.

Care to elaborate on the Warcraft system?

This one friend of mine is working on running a Fire Emblem tabletop based off D20s, and it seems pretty solid, especially since FE is so reliant on an RNG. Tactics would seem interesting too, but I think that the experience and ability point systems would be too many numbers to deal with. FE's numbers are so straightforward and standard that it's easy to even create your own character growths for level-ups, but Tactics' leveling system has stats that are way harder to calculate. In short, this tabletop sounds interesting and it could work, but it seems REALLY high-maintenance if you want to do it right.

Oh, and I don't play tabletops and don't plan to start but Stevo's plan was so nifty I had to say yes when he asked me to help him with battle mechanics and create character growths.

Actually, it really isnt that difficult. See, keeping with the 100 EXP thing alllows you to give less and less due to higher levels, and the JP system works great as well, as it gives players a chance to customize their characters (especiallly with my new "Innate" abilities for each class).

One major thing I changed was the class aftermathing. When you are a Knight and become a mage, shouldn't you still be able to wield a sword? Although it is agaisnt a mage to use those types of weapons, you still can. Same goes for an Archer using an axe. If you know how, you can. It also means that someone who spends 50 levels as a Monk will be as strong as he was then when he becomes a Black Mage.

It really does work out, if you think through EVERY LITTLE DETAIL, which took me months to do.

Edit
Oh ya, and about the character growth, its a simple matter of assinging a Hit Die, ala D&D.

Hmmm... a Tactics Tabletop game. That would be very interesting.
I think you should probably just go with the in-game mechanics, as they seem to work just fine.

But like I said, that would require everyone to bring a calculator, plus it removes the random fun of the D&D-like system. With my group at least, we all voted on a d20 setup, and it works great.

Hmm I too tried to do it Table top when I was despeately bored. But I couldn't seem to figure out a level up system and it just became more like chess. But I think it would be cool if there would be a Tactics Online.

I think Tactics Online would be awesome, to test who would be more a brilliant strategic.
And could have battles based on levels, character jobs, and such. I think it would be cool. shifty.gif
