It's July. I'm a Southerner. Football time anyone?

So.

NCAA Football 2006 (for all gaming systems) comes out in a couple days, so I figured it's a good a time as any to start a college football thread. Who's your team? How're you gonna do? Any bold predictions for the upcoming year? For all upcoming college freshmen: forget about this year of football; you're not going to remember it hopefully. For the rest of us, let's get down to bid'ness.

Read my sig and you'll konw I'm all about some Auburn Tigers. I'll start my soapbox by saying we're not going to drop off as much as people think. Undefeated? I wouldn't bet my house or anything, but then again I wouldn't have last year either. The running game will be back (believe it or not), the WRs are among the best in the country and the D is siiiiiick. What better time to break in a frosh at QB? That said, 9-2. Beat LSU and we play for the title. Lose and we still play on New Year's, the D alone will get us there.

BOLD (or not...) predictions...

USC will NOT go undefeated. The Pac 10 is better this year, and with suspensions, injuries and no Norm Chow, the road game at Oregon looks like the upset of the year. They're great, still, but you can't have as many close games as them without eventually slipping and dropping one. [In the post-season, they beat half the NFL.]

Texas will finally beat Oklahoma. But still not go undefeated. Vince Young is great, but any team with that talent that requires him to step up and beat Kansas is not ready for primetime. Ohio St. is overrated, but still beats the Horns.

Adrian Peterson will drop off for a season. Injury + retooled O-line + new QB = sophomore nightmare.

The SEC is overrated. Holy Christ, did I just day that..? UT is OK, but I still have doubts. Urban Meyer is not Jesus. UF'll be good, but not that good. LSU is loaded, but Les Miles + (STILL) unproven QB does not = 11 wins. Sorry. Georgia loses the all-time NCAA winning QB, ALL of its receivers, half the defense and one of their RB stars (the other is injury prone...) Welcome to a second tier bowl Mark Richt! And don't get me started on Bama (and this is from a Tuscaloosa native (read: traitor)). An injury prone team, a coach that hasn't won a big game yet, and I'm supposed to believe they're gonna compete for a title? No thanks, I don't like the taste of that Cool-Aid. Winner of Auburn/LSU vs. winner of UF/UT (as per usual.)

(Deep breath.)

Picks:
SEC winner: Auburn over Tennessee (again.. Believe!)
Big 12 winner: Texas
Big 10 winner: cluster-f@#$. Pick 'em (Michigan, Iowa or OHSt.)
Pac 10 winner: gee..
ACC winner: VT (FSU is in jail, Miami is awaiting trial.)
No other conference matters.

National title: Hmmmmm. I can think of 15 teams that could get there..
Michigan over Texas. Neither is undefeated going in. (Ha-ha BCS!!)
They both only play one or two tough games.

Heisman Trophy:
Vince Young over Leinart etc.
Hype vs. hype vs. hype...

Overrated:
Ohio St., Florida, Tennessee, LSU

Underrated:
Iowa, Auburn, Louisville, VT

Game of The Year:
Ohio St. vs. Texas
Finally, balls when it comes to non-conference scheduling.

So, what do y'all think?

Being born in Bryan, I can't help but be an Aggie. And being an Aggie, I just hope for a winning season... right now I don't care about a Bowl game, just another winning season... unsure.gif

'Cause I know how inconsistent they can be. I also hold out a narrow hope they can beat Texas in the Thanksgiving game, but that'll depend on whether the defense (which is supposed to be great this year *fingers crossed*) becomes the Wrecking Crew of old again.

...

Probably not. tongue.gif

Much hinges on Coach Fran' and the D this year... and... Fran's not exactly Slocum when he was at his height. sad.gif Appel can't do it all, y'know. McNeal will probably get lost in the Heisman race as people hype up Vince Young, too... which is fine by me actually, Heisman winners don't have great track records in the NFL. wink.gif

...This's kinda what happens when you try to root for a team like the Aggies, though... you start to be a little pessimistic about your own team... :-/

Exact opposite here, die-hard Buckeye's fan. Still upset the Browns drafter Braylon Edwards, aka Mr Can't Catch a Ball. I feel the Big Ten will not make a big impact this year on the National Championship, the only two team that have a shot at making an impact would be the Buckeyes or the Hawkeyes. And calling Ohio State overrated is crazy since the majority of their players last year were underclassmen. Two years ago they lost 12 players to the draft, the most in that year. This last year the only significant player lost was Nugent and a kicker is not a big deal in college. Ohio State and Iowa will make a BCS game but also so could Michagan, Minnesota and Mich St as they are starting to recover. Wisconsin is still a dark horse but all that matters is that the Big Ten remains the strongest conference in the nation

I'm more of a Big 12 fan, but since the topic has been on the Big 10, I thought I'd just chime in my prediction that the Boilermakers surprise everyone and take the Conference this year.

Being from Evanston and going to a college with no football team, I'm a Northwestern fan by default, despite the fact I know they have little to no chance of finishing better than 6-5. I love watching good college football, but most of the time I just root for the most embarrassing situation to turn out for the BCS (like last year) so maybe the day will come when it's finally scrapped, we get a playoff, and college football gets the level of excitement it deserves.

I beg to differ. I'm one of the ones thinking the SEC to be the strongest conference, with the Big 12 (South) on the way up. smile.gif (Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas, A&M, OSU... and they wondered why A&M usually winds up with one of the toughest schedules in all of college football tongue.gif)

Even though im all about the Big Ten i will agree that the conference is not as tough as it used to be, but the big ten always offers surprises, rivalries, and straight out college football. That is good to watch. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif
