But if you are desperatly clinging to a little golden wire of hope for a remake...

Don't we all just love Barret's metaphors?

In any case, drawing from numerous (economic) reasons stated in the FFVII PS3 remake thread, I strongly believe that Square-Enix will not revamp FFVII's graphics for a PS3 re-release/remake. After all, they're a company that has to be concerned about its profits and its performance in the market of RPGs, and there's a LOT of competition out there, even if they've already joined together two of the most well-known RPG companies (Square and Enix).

Calm down, people. There's already a ton of other FFVII stuff slated to come out, and it takes a LOT of manpower, time, imagination, and hard work to produce something even a remake that's truly market-worthy. And given the fact that the PS3 will be backward-compatible, why wouldn't Square just (more cheaply) keep on producing FFVII PS discs rather than invest a ton of money in a remake? There will come a day (just like we have seen for FFI-FFVI) that FFVII is 'old' enough that it'll be economically viable to be remade/remastered/re-released.

Don't get me wrong here, I'd love to see a remake of FFVII on PS3 technology or some equivalent. The trailer, as I've stated above, is pretty darn sweet, but also as stated before, Square has used another older game for a technical demonstration before, so this wouldn't be the first time they've used this tactic. (The only differences here are that the graphics are sweeter and the game in question is better-known.)

Now, there's a chance that Square-Enix may actually pursue such a remake, either because my simpleton economic analysis was wrong or because there's a seriously overwhelming fan-base that would buy such a game (keep in mind that the price of a game determines both profit and demand, people), or maybe because it's their unwise business decision, or whatever. I wouldn't mind seeing that either, although I personally recommend they wait on the idea.

I don't quite know what you mean.

Actually, the whole movie was in gameplay graphics. I’m just guessing because of the graphics. If you were to compare a PS2’s CG graphics to the FFVI and VIII tech demo, you can see the difference. Let’s take FFX-2 scene where Yuna was singing with Lenne. Yuna and Lenne’s hair are much smoother than Cloud and Aerith’s hair. The same for Rinoa and Squall’s hair.

People have been beggin’ for a FF7 remake for ages. But it’s never happened, has it? People, just give it up. It won’t ever happen. Square Enix is gonna keep milking the FF7 cow, taking whatever they can from it until it goes outta style. THEN maybe we’ll see a FF7 remake.

I really doubt we're going to see an FF7 remake until Square is confident that such a venture will be profitable. If we're talking about remaking FF7 with the graphics used in this demo, I really don't see that happening anytime soon.

Quote (Silverlance @ 30th May 2005 17:36)
Correction. They've only remade 1 and 2. smile.gif

And the remakes of 1 & 2 were updates from NES graphics to, what, SNES or slightly better than SNES graphics? Done in the age of more advanced 3D graphics? Not exactly a bold risk taking venture. While there were some added goodies, like the additional bosses in DoS, that's nothing on the scale of completing rendering an old game like FF7 with these demo graphics.

Also, the difference between a remake and the most recent spin-offs is that the spin-offs are still new. We haven't seen them before, and there is bound to be increased interest. There is not enough guranteed interest in re-releasing a game many people have already played.

personally i cant see how remaking FF7 would be bad for them economically, considering the fact that i have never bought a game (other then EQ) for the new retail price - i've always waited till they were cheaper, regardless of how good it looked, sounded, or how much i wanted it - but i WOULD buy a shiny new ff7 if they made it - heck, i'd buy the ps3 JUST to play it
also, i had heard (may be just a rumor) that spirits within was originally supposed to be ff7, but they changed their minds - anyway, i liked that movie, despite the lack of anything FF related in it

How would you definie "gameplay graphics" versus any other type of graphic? If its a cutscene, then there's no 'gameplay' going on. I had a pretty lame copy of that .wmv file to view, so I couldn't really look that closely at the hair, but Im guessing the video has been compressed enough to the point that small details will be hard to distinguish. When you say "smoother hair" Im guessing you're referring to the movement...? Aerith's hair looked very nice in the scene, but it was fairly static (like she used a bit too much hairspray). The walking movements have already been commented on. These small details are more likely due to lack of refinement in the video, but I certainly wouldn't take this .wmv clip as any sort of proof of gameplay footage until we actually see a clip of someone PLAYING, as opposed to watching the game.

I think we could just take the word of Square-Enix President, Youichi Wada, as to it being real time: Linkage.

Not to be too semantic, but doesn't that link say that it would be possible to make visuals like that on PS3 for in-game play, and not that these visuals WERE in-game play? It's not as if he says that the graphics shown there were from video of someone manipulating the action, or even as if the PS3 was far enough along for the team to have developed the demo using the actual hardware.

Asked about his impressions of the three next generation consoles, Wada stated that all three would feature significant capabilities. Referring to the Final Fantasy VII technical demo he showed off at the presentation of Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation 3, he mentioned it would be possible to develop games featuring visuals like the ones shown in the demo, running in real-time on PlayStation 3. Similar to his statement on Monday, the Square Enix president reiterated his intention to look at not only the hardware, but also the services that come with it. This generation of hardware would be the age of middleware and engine providers. By resorting to middleware and graphics engines (such as Epic's Unreal Engine 3), development costs could be reduced.

He is saying that they think they would be able to make gameplay (as in player is making input and the computer is busy thinking) look like the demo. I'd say that if the demo were simply a movie, the PS2 might be able to handle it; but since that is pretty much the only demo I've seen of the PS3's power, I really can't say if that's unrealistic or not. Let's remember that Microsoft has released some amazing photos of what the XBox 360 can do, and I don't think Sony would be satisfied unless they could match (if not surpass) what Bill Gate's evil juggernaut is producing.
I'm going to hold the faith and say that is probably what we could expect from PS3.

there's my endoresment of gamelplay graphics! thumbup.gif

Does anyone here read EGM?

I love this magazine, not only funny, but they usually have the most up-to-date information.

I was looking at The Rumor Mill in this months EGM. For those of you who don't read EGM, The Rumor Mill is designed to sift through facts and fallacies to present it's reader with truth.

On Page 56, with a bigass picture of Cloud in the top corner, there is a huge article about this Tech Demo and it says,
"Square's president denied that the footage meant a remake of its colossal PS1 role-playing game was in the works. Put away the Kleenex, people; I've got it on very very good authority that the company is indeed bringing a visually updated version of FFVII to PS3."

Now whether or not this is just another prank on EGM's part, its still hope... thank god.

True, but then again, companies have a tendancy to BLANTANTLY LIE about doing something, do it anyway, and then reap the rewards from the surprised fans. I don't really take anything a major company says for their word, since I've seen companies lie SO many times over the years. And I'm VERY confident that if they DID remake FF7, they'd make money out the ass. It's easily their most popular and well recognized FF, whether it's your personal favorite or not (FF6 is my favorite, though), and it's a very marketable francise. As far as I think, people WILL buy a FF7 remake. Hell, I know I would. As for the facts, though, I'm hearing things about both possibilities, so I don't know.

Hahaha, well you know when they kick out all this FF7 stuff (Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, Crisis Core?) They're probably gonna make some money... A LOT of money.

Then maybe that lowly tech demo will become a reality

New info that read carefully might be interesting...

Quote (Gamespot.com)
Square Enix's initial response to our inquiry about whether the tech demo is suggestive of a full game in the works fell in the realm of a carefully worded corporate response. The reps noted that, as was mentioned at E3, the demo was created to show just how powerful the PlayStation 3 technology is. As a result, it's a tech demo only and is not intended to indicate that a PS3 remake of FFVII is presently under active development by the company.

However, when pressed, the reps also noted that further plans for content based on FFVII haven't been set, per se. They affirmed that the resulting reaction from fans over the demo footage and the content related to FFVII shown at the party has been overwhelmingly positive. As a result, provided fan reaction continues to be feverishly positive over the demo, and the very notion of a FFVII remake is certainly something Square Enix would bear in mind when planning future projects.

Does this mean it's on? Probably not at this exact moment, but at this point, we're willing to bet it's not a matter of if an FFVII remake will happen, but when.

This discredits what I've posted earlier about Square saying that there was descisive proof of never being any remake... C'mon ppl make up your minds, and non-Square affiliated, watch the trailer, and bug the hell out of Square for a remake!!

Is that true, I can't believe they made that movie in the first place. They should of just called it Spirits Within and leave as that so it wouldn't Tarnish FinaL Fantasy's Name!I was so looking foward to those remakes. I thought they should have remade the first 6 alot better though. But that trailer was awesome but I heard it was only a test to see the power of ps3. If they do decided to make it Hurray! smile.gif

People keep on asking if they're going to remake it on PS3, and square-enix always gives vaque answers about FFVII being redone for PS3

but thats not my question, my question is which system would they remake it on if they were to, because square doesn't really seem to hold strong to any company
they just want to go where the money is (they even put FFVI on the playstation)

so chances are FFVII being remade could have good chances (notice i'm using the word chance) of being remade, but on the most popular next generation console

it would be a smart move by square to go with the system that is sitting in most households

so my guess is squares going to wait for a year or two then revamp the game for the superior system

I'd put my money on PS3 if they were going to. I really highly doubt they'd go back to Nintendo or walk hand in hand with Micro$oft.

Oh man, I barely care about video games and Rpgs anymore but wow would this make my day. I would buy it for SURE. Oh man, this would be like a dream come true to my video game side. wub.gif

From what I've heard it was a rumor... but do you think they should take into the next gen. systems! I've seen the opening vid on gamespot.com... I read that it was just to show the graphic capabilities of PS3 and I hope they do it, but I doubt they'll do it... at least right away.

See, I feel that way too. it is all very vague, and yes, it was said that they had NO plans, but there's one word missing: CURRENTLY NO plans. throwing that word in makes things look kind of hazy, don't you think? of course, i'm just another hopelful freak who wants one of my favourite games to blow away new portions of my thoughtmeats. but i won't die if it doesn't happen either.

It might be possible that FF7 will be released for the PS3. As someone said earlier, companies’ plan change a lot. I mean look at the Xenosaga series. It was supposed to be 6 episodes long, and they cut it into 3. Maybe all the money Advent Children, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, and Last Order will be enough to have them remake FF7. I just hope for a FF6 (I know, Anthologies, but I want it in 3-D) or FF8 remake, even though it’ll probably not happen >.<
