Whether it be from the old series, movies or cartoons, which Batman Villains are favorites in your book? All of mine are from the cartoons:
The Joker (along with Harley Quinn) Scar Face The Riddler Poison Ivy Clay Face The Scarecrow This post has been edited by Bum's Rush on 14th June 2005 02:11 -------------------- |

My favorites have always been The Riddler, Two-Face, and Catwoman. All of the Riddler's episodes were extremely entertaining for a puzzle and game geek like myself; The Return of the Riddler is my all-time favorite episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Two-Face is not only a dastardly crime lord, but his own obsession with chance and his past history as one of Bruce Wayne's dearest friends makes his character much more interesting and more sympathetic while making it all the more difficult for Batman to face off with him. Catwoman is the classic villainous vixen. The role that she practically originated as the skillful and sexy thief constantly at odds with the hero is so overplayed now that it's easy to forget that she originated it. A crappy Halle Berry movie doesn't help, either, but in the comics and animated series, Catwoman rocked.

Joker was always my top fave, cartoons, movies, whatever. It only helps that Jack Nicholson was Joker in the original movie.

The Joker
The Riddler and for some reason...The Penguin. From the comics and especially the late-60's series. Just doesn't have the right feel without Robin shrieking "Holy hemorrhoids, Batman!" or any variant around ever corner. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. I've always loved The Joker. An evil clown on a murderous rampage gets me every time

The Joker is brilliant and downright scary in many of his incarnations, particularly those of Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke" and Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns." I like the way that, despite having no real superpowers, he's just as dangerous as any other top tier villain of his universe by virtue of sheer craziness.
I also have a fondness for the circumlocutive machinations of Ra'as Al Ghul. He's a thinking man's supervillain, and probably the only one who manages to stay consistently one step ahead of the World's Greatest Detective. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. Heh. My love for Batman: The Animated Series knows no bounds, and my favorite villian was of course The Joker voiced excellently by Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill. Even the sidekick they invented for the show, Harlequin, is an amazing character.
I'd list a runner-up but there is really no point, Joker demolishes the competition. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

I don't know about ya'll but I've been watching The Batman on WB and Toonami (I started watching it late into like the first half of the season, so I missed alot) and I've been enjoying the new outlooks on the villains. I was in shock when I saw Scar Face, I couldn't believe anyone remembered who he was! Catwoman looked pretty cool but Tim Burton's will always be my favorite. Clay Face looked great as well, and I didn't think it was possible for The Joker to look and act any more insane than he already was, but they managed to do it. And today I was watching it and as soon as I saw the first couple of seconds I thought, "Hey I think the Riddler is gonna be in thsi one!" And he was...and I was shocked. The smart conceiving Riddler I knew was now some tall white Marilyn Manson look-alike. I admit he was as dangerous and crafty as before, but the Riddler never had henchmen nor did he wear black make up on his face, or wear his hair extending to his waist. It was a good take on him, but a part of me just didn't really like his look, but nonetheless I welcomed him to the new Batman universe.

I really don't like The Batman very much. It's an okay show, I guess, but they just RUINED the Joker, in my opinion. And the show isn't as dark as every other version of Batman. It's still okay, but... pshaw.
Oh, right, being ON topic. JOKER, hands down. This post has been edited by Spiffyness on 16th June 2005 03:09 -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

I always was a Joker fan, but I've just been to see Batman Begins (the movie, you know) and Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow just ruled. Sure, they took a bit of artistic license to his character, but he was so evil. In the film, he was just such a calculating and out-of-the-ordinary villain. So yeah. It's always been the Joker, but the Scarecrow of Batman Begins is just brilliant.

Man, I just saw it, too, it's AWESOME! And yeah, I never really liked Scarecrow before, but he's REALLY evil in that movie.

I forgot about this thread! Anyway I saw the movie too and I loved it as well, including the Scarecrow, scary and creepy, just like he should be, bbuuutttt
Possible spoilers: highlight to view This may be just me but he reminded me alot of Johnny Depp, especially since they showed a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer before the movie. I just hate they made him as a guy who acted tough but when attacked, like when he got hit by that stun gun, he acted like a little bitch and ran or yelled in his shrilly voice. The original scarecrow could stand on his own two feet and could kick a little ass. -------------------- |

Not to errode the topic, but I really don't like "The Batman" at all. The revision of the villains looks dumb to me, and what the heck is batman doing smiling so much? He's acting like Spiderman and it's obnoxious.

I'm actually not a fan of any of the batman villains, they all annoy me. However, I think that the best one for batman has to be the Joker.

Quote (The Ancient @ 20th June 2005 10:55) The Animated Series kicks "The Batman"s animated ass. Definately. Most of the villians aren't too different, but they REALLY messed up the Joker. -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

I'm alot more of a Superman fan, so Batman obviously doesn't excite me so much.
I haven't seen the new Batman movie, but the Scarecrow has always been extremely evil. He started as a psychiatrist, remember? The most interesting enemies I've found were Mr. Freeze (Governator notwithstanding), Clay Face, and Man-bat. I haven't read any stories where Batman comes across Hush specifically, but he's high on my list. Look at what he did when he was only like 10 years old. I reccomend everyone picking up the Batman: Hush trade. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

The Animated Series did kick ass, I just want to watch 'em all again, it was among my favorite cartoon series when I was young, then Cartoon Network took it off the air. It had a good run, The Batman is decent, I admit it's not as dark as it's other counterparts and they changed ALOT of the back histories of some of the villains (Like Mr. Freeze, he just steals and loves to freeze things, no heartbreak over his wife or anything) but I still like it. And the Hush trade is pretty good, as well as the Dark Knight series.

Mr. Freeze is another one of my favorite villians, he's teh uber-awesome. The best Batman-related show ever, in my opinion, was Batman Beyond. That show was teh bestz0rz.

Scarecrow rocked the house with his mind-distorting gas and his clean-cuttin' scythe. If seeing that guy in broad daylight is scary, imagine how much ol' Bruce was shakin' in his boots when he saw him at night. Yeesh.
Other than that, the staples: Joker, Penguin, Riddler. I think there was a guy named Bane who was made by Poison Ivy or something and he had all these pumps in his back. Maybe he was just in one of those animated movies or something...speaking of which, what about Phantasm? And that guy who fell in that chemical and turned into orange goo? Or was that Clay-Face? Yeah, I may need to do a little catch-up with the series. =/ -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Quote (Shotgunnova @ 21st June 2005 00:59) I think there was a guy named Bane who was made by Poison Ivy or something and he had all these pumps in his back. That was only in that horrible excuse for a Batman movie. Let us never mention it again. The real Bain was some Russian Assasin(I think) who ended up breaking Bruce's back. Resulting in the terrible Azreal storyline... Despite the fact that a lot of people like Bane, and he's a decent villain what he's brought to the Batman story can not be forgiven. Saw the new Batman movie last night. Freakin' Incredible! I really loved how they handled Raj Al'Goul. They really put the story together quite nicely and Christian Bale really surprised me how well he did Batman. Based on the end of the movie it looks like he might even be able to play a good Bruce Wayne too. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

The Joker, obviously. He's a totally different type of villain, not the dark and ominous figure ruling things from the shadows, or the buff and haughty villain that feels the need to expalin all the details of his plan before placing the hero in some easy-to-escape-from booby trap, but an almost harmless looking clown that was more crazy than evil. I also wouldn't be the first person to think that he served as the inspiration for Kefka.
But of the lesser known villains, my favorite is definitely Zsasz. He was a serial killer that kept track of how many people he had killed by cutting a small mark onto his body with a knife after each successful murder. Anyone who can get their hands on it should read "The Last Arkham," the first four issues of "Shadow of the Bat." A very good Alan Grant story. |

Zsasz was a neat character with an interesting gimmick, but I think he loses points for getting killed by Az-Bat, the dumbest Batman stand-in of all time.
When it comes to totally obscure Batman villains, my vote goes to the dumb ones.
