I need some help. I KNOW I've read somewhere that if you defeat Kefka with a certain 3 characters, and only those characters, that you will get an alternate ending sequence, but I can't find that page anymore. Any help? Thanks

It's called a "C.E.S." challenge, standing for "Celes, Edgar, and Setzer." They are the only three characters that you MUST acquire to advance the story in the World of Ruin. All the others are essentially sidequests. SO, just get them and stay away from any situation or area that will add another member to your party. If you've finished FF6 a few times you should know where those places are and just avoid them. Tip:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view The trickiest to remember is accidentaly getting Sabin: don't go in that first town you come to when you leave Solitary Island. Just go straight to Mobliz (Terra doesn't join the first time.) And yes, the ending is different. All of the other character scenes at the end are replaced with a picture and a scrolling background of where you find them. The CES scenes are altered as well and they use different dialogue. It's a cool thing to do if you're looking for something different, it's not hard and it's something most players never see, so go for it if you want. Hope I was of help, and welcome to CoN. Thanks treasure hunter, I'm going to try it. I'm not too worried about the end but it may be a bit tricky getting Celes throught the first part of the WOR without Sabin.
With Setzer and his wonderful fixed dice trick Kefka should be snap. |

The more I think about it the tougher it seems. Without Locke I can't get Ragnarock , learn Ultima, or learn life3 . Without life 3 it's tough to get the Gem Box. (unless vanish, xzone works, I'll have to try). Without Cyan I can't fight all the dragons. I hope I can at least get the offering at the ancient castle and learn quick.
I love quick. The last time through the game I had 4 characters and only 2 of them got to have a shot at Kefka before he went down. With the gem box and quick he received 5 Ultimas before he knew I was in the room, and then got 16 shots of atma and theif knife. |

You can still learn Ultime from the paladin shield. Get the cursed shield and fight 255 battles, it will turn into the paladin shield.

You need Locke to GET the Paladin's shield, IIRC.

I finished the game with around lv 45 with Celes, Setzer and Edgar.., you shouldn't to many problems to defeat Kefka's castle, but beware...be careful with these bosses:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Inferno, strike and Rough: Just use Jump with a dragon horn ( In Phoenix Cave), or just a single Jump , like me... Then you got Guardian , that miserable and strong boss!!!, I still got nightmares with him....you keep jumping ![]() And then you got the Goddess, which is not to much a challenge if you defeat her quickly. (before the countdown reach 0 )....Atma weapon , if you want the take him, just equip a Wall ring and a Cure Ring and he's dead. ![]() Good luck, and if you want...in the floating continent level up Celes, and the other characters ( Setzer and Edgar) will be at the same level, when you meet them again...If you go with LV99, they'll be at that level for example..but need patience...I went with LV 57. It's really not too bad. You might have to level up a bit more, but consider that all of your best equipment will be shared among 3 people as opposed to all characters, so they should be good to go. Kefka's not a really difficult boss anyway, killable in one character's attack with the right set-ups and levels.
The hardest part about it isn't the bosses or any of that, it's instant death attacks (Kefka's Tower is a series of reloads, hope you're playing on emulator...) and the lack of Cure3 (Starlet=acquiring Relm...) |

Yeah, it should be fun. Part of my problem is that I've never really had much use for Celes. Actually, Ive finished the game lots of different ways but never really used her once I had collected enough characters. Has anyone out there been able to get the Gem Box with this scenario?

Certainly. Berserk him first, then Rasp Rasp Rasp Rasp (ad nauseum) and heal when needed. It'll flash "ultima" up, but then go away or say something about not enough MP. The idea is he can't cast Ultima if he's out of MP, and on top of that, he DIES when he runs out of MP. It's a long battle, but is probably worth it since with only 3 people and no Cure3 you might need all the help you can get.

If you're going to fight at a level under fifty, be careful of your equipment in the last tower. You really don't want to have, say, Celes wearing all your kick ass magic defense equipment when Edgar runs into a statue. My personal strategies for tough bosses:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Vs. Magimaster: Been covered. Rasp like a messed up voicebox. Vs. Doom: You need Vanish/Phantom to dodge his attack after being targetted. If you can pull that off, you're home free. Vs. Final Battle: Setzer: Abuse of Fixed Dice. My version was L47, wore a genji set, had Fixed Dice-Offering-Black Belt, had Quick, and solo killed Final Kefka in two rounds. Edgar: Tank. I had him at L46, had a mixture of force and genji equipment, and wielded two swords with the Genji Glove, but really was useless despite the overblown HP. He died from the tier three Calmness. Celes: All-powerful mage. Mine was at L51, had double the magic power of either of the other two (yay esper bonuses), wore a genji/minerva combo, and used Gem Box-Gold Hairpin with Quick. Also died from Calmness. If I had to change anything about this party and strategy it would be to give Edgar more esper bonuses in strength, more magic, and a ribbon, so he wouldn't be just there to absorb damage. The other two had the whole "he dies in two turns" thing going on, and Edgar had...two swords and bad magic. -------------------- My soul is bound to the Mistress of the Afterlife, and my fealty is to her always. There's no such thing as an 'alternate ending'. It's just that: a ) every character you leave behind will be replaced with a black'ndwhite background slide of the location they kinda belong to and b ) the three characters who share their ending sequence with another character will get another ending if you didn't get those characters: Relm has Strago in hers, Sabin and Edgar share one and Celes and Locke interact. So yeah, it's possible to have an almost endless amount of 'alternate endings', but it has nothing to do with specifically getting Celes, Edgar and Setzer and nobody else; it's just one of the many, many combinations. And what's that about not being able to fight all dragons without Cyan? You can easily just open the Storm Drgn chest without getting Cyan, and if you think you need the character Cyan if the battle, somebody needs to inflict damage upon you ![]() This post has been edited by Djibriel on 17th June 2005 15:29 -------------------- |

I did the CES challenge last summer it wasent too hard once you equip Setzer with the fixed dice and offring and give all you characters marvel shoes it gets real easy like killing the fire dragon in one round of combat with just Setzer. Also if you give Celes the enhance sword she is imposible to hit then you can use her to heal.
Oh and if you need some help you can use Gau but make sure you get him to leep something on the veldt again before you go finish off Kefka. Well that is what I did any way. ![]() -------------------- Quote Psalms 148: 7-9, 11(a), 13. I konw I know... but at the time I didn't realize that. I just wanted to beat the game with three characters, and I knew that you could leap Gau befor you fight Keffka. So I used that to my advantage. Sorry.

I saw the ending for the CES challenge at some website, which isn't all that different but still kinda neat. So sad to be missing so many characters in it though :X

You're right, she does fly all the way from Mobliz to Kefka's Tower to engage in the credits if you left her to compete with Phunbaba by herself; which was all the proof I needed to say she's the main character beyond doubt way back when

Yes!, it was really hard for me...also, don't waste much time leveling up ,it's much fun that way...( believe me, I just betted all I have for best items in the colosseum, and I level up from lv 26 to 36, and that's all...) I was Lv 45 max, at the last save points, and finally some encounters like EvilOscar ( or Malboro, Morbol, etc. ), Brontaur, GTbehemoth....you can't run away from that battles, inside the castle you can run from almost any encounter, use Smoke bombs...from Calmness, just equip Force Armor, Force Shield and any stuff that gives Magic Evasion, and pray...3 characters vs Kefka is possible, but equip a Ribbon at least, also Golem..save him for that battle.

Didn't I say as much? I didn't say there was an alternate ending, I just pointed out the ways in which the ending is different than a normal (all character) game. Quote And yes, the ending is different. All of the other character scenes at the end are replaced with a picture and a scrolling background of where you find them. The CES scenes are altered as well and they use different dialogue. Granted, I could have explained it better. The first part holds true anytime you miss a character, and is not specific to a C.E.S. game. Also, only 2 of the C.E.S. character scenes are different, since they require another character (Setzer's is normal), so I could have been more clear as well. The point I was trying to make mainly was that many people might not know that certain scenes are different in the ending if you don't acquire certain characters. Most people probably haven't seen the alt. Figaro ending since getting both is so easy to do. That said, I was unaware of the third different scene involving Relm and Strago, I usually get them both in a normal game. Though, I should have been able to logically deduce that it would be different with only one of the two. Learn something new every day I suppose. Just keep in mind that the very last encounter with Kefka is rarely a problem to a decently-well-prepared team. It's the final dungeon, with its eight bosses (not including the final 'marathon' battle), plus the final battle's first three tiers.
Another thing to remember when planning strategy is this: Each team (or character, if you're doing CES) will encounter one statue, one more non-dragon boss (out of Inferno, Guardian, and Atma), and possibly one dragon (either Gold or Skull). As I remember, the dragons and Atma are optional; all the others are obligatory. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
