Who here has played it yet? And if so, what did you like/dislike about it?

I, for one, could only find on flaw in the game: There's about an hour of game before you ever reach your first save point, and that is punctuated with some very long fmv's.

Other than that, it was wonderful. The battle system is just complicated enough to stay interesting for almost the entire game, the story and chars are first rate, and the graphics are uber impressive.

my fav party
Kos-Mos: ultimate killing machine
Ziggy: cyborg+bounty hunter/secret agent=badass
Chaos: what about him doesn't kick ass?

Xenosaga is what I'm currently playing, and I'm loving it. Fantastic game. It almost makes the first game seem excusable (because let's face it, it was awful).

I agree.  Xenogears had run-of-the-mill graphics, twitchy gameplay, half-baked concepts, and an often opaque plot, punctuated by strange anime cutscenes and exceedingly pretentious pseudo-philosophical drivel.

From what I've seen of Xenosaga, however, it looks great.  Reviewers and players alike give it raves, and the graphics truly look like a work of art.  Hopefully I'll save up enough for it someday...

I started playing Xenosaga yesterday and the only thing I would complain about is that there's about 20 hours of cutscenes, but since it's all very nice, beautiful and detailed, it kicks ass... biggrin.gif

By the way, Super Moogle, Xenosaga is now on Greatest Hits for about $19.99 at most retailers.

Xenosaga isn't a game. It's a movie with random encounters.

I really like the combat system. I don't remember much about Xenogears (I didn't play much, either), so I don't know if it's similar, but I thought that the system was interesting and innovative. I also like a few of the characters, kinda: KOS-MOS, Ziggy, and Junior.

The other characters irritate me, especially Shion. If it seemed like the audience was supposed to think she was a stuck-up pain in the ass even though she thinks she's cool, that would be one thing. But it looks like the creators expect her to be taken seriously.

I really don't get the plot. Most of the time, it reminds me of the Matrix movies: lots of random symbolism that doesn't amount to a thing. Some of their ideas are okay, but, like someone else said, the whole thing is pretty half-baked. A lot of the background material isn't followed to its logical conclusion. The characters usually react in a way that gets them a ticket to the plot bus rather than as you might expect them to react more naturally.

Episode 2 isn't much better.

I've been thinking of getting this game, checking it out to see if it's worth it. So, I take it that most people agree it's worth the $20.

yeah; I just finished Xenosaga II awhile ago, and so now I've played through both Xenosaga games. They DO have MANY upon MANY cutscenes. A movie with random encounters is good, though they're not really random, I'm afraid to say.

As to the plot and whatever, I get the idea is that everything is building and mounting, and will not be answered until after they've all been. I kind of get the feeling that you're to be satisfied at the end, but still have questions.

The only things I don't really like about them is that I played through Xenosaga in about 40 hours, and Xenosaga II in about 25! These two and probably episode III could all be put into one game. Why they needed 2 discs for episode II is beyond me.

And, as to the Xenogears, It's one of my favorites, despite all the weird stuff going on, thats actually why I like it, I guess. It seems like Xenogears is one of those games with no middle ground. People wither love or hate it. It is too bad that they ahd to rush to finish it, and the translation isn't as good, that may account for most/some of it.

I have beat Xenosaga and i am working on Xenosaga II now same as the first one TONS of cutscenes, it does seem like a movie at times with such good storylines and graphics.

The thing I didn't like about this game was the design of the characters. Junior, MOMO, KOS-MOS and Shion look extremely "cute" and weird. I find it hard to believe that someone with Shion's childlike face is a scientist of some sorts...too cute to be characters. Also it seems like everyone that isn't cute is not going to join your party.

I've started a file on Xenosaga episode 1, which I got last summer, but I never really got anywhere; too many other games to play. And in response to JZ's remarks about XG having no middle ground for fans, I have to agree and disagree. I'm personally part of some kinda middle ground with that game, because I love certain aspects of it and detest others; love the sprites/combos/style, hate the 3D effects and long periods of gear battling, love the music, cinematics, parts of the plot, and half of the characters, hate the plot inconsistencies, pacing of the second disk, and the other half of the characters. I have similar stances on Chrono Cross and all three Star Ocean games, also, for some reason.

I just got a PS2 around February (had only an Xbox before, it's all fine and dandy but I couldn't wait for the PS3 to play all the PS1/2 RPGs I missed out on), and I just got Xenogears last Friday. I'm already 37 hours into it, and what's NOT to love? I will admit that it's a little anime-ish for my likings (mostly the dialogue... VERY anime-ish dialogue, redundant and awkward at times), but the plot is VERY engrossing, the music and graphics are great (not great quality, but well done at any rate), and I'm LOVIN' the battle system. I know Xenosaga is a prequel, but I still wanna beat Xenogears before I play it.

And Maria's theme is great (at least I assume it's her theme, there's a slow one and a fast one. The fast one's called "flight" in the OST).

Like I said in the "What games are you playing?" topic, I recently got Xenogears in the mail from Amazon. It....is....Jesus.

I liked Xenosaga (second best RPG on the PS2, No.1 being FFX), but Xenogears kicks its ass. Thing is, Square made Gears, Namco made Saga. Funny though, as Tales of Symphonia (Namco) is one of my favs ever.

But as far as Saga goes, I always use KOS-MOS, chaos, and Shion. NO ONE else. Not evem Junior. Ick.

(btw, Junior=rip-off of Billy Lee Black. Which nets him cool points. w00t)

It was pretty good, but Xenogears is by far much better.

My only gripe about Xenosaga is the cutscenes. Far too many and far too long. One time I timed a cutscene, and it came out to 10 minutes blink.gif.

That's what I thought when I first saw him in action.

It is her theme. "Flight" is a faster remix than "Gathering Stars in the Night Sky".

Okay, thanks, I thought I might've gotten the name wrong. Flight is SUCH a great song, and her actual theme is really good, too.

From what I've heard about the cutscenes... in Xenosaga, is the entire game kinda like the second disk of Xenogears? 'Cause that's the impression I'm gettin'. I actually LIKED the pacing of the second disk, 'cause it was a nice break from all the action ('cause sometimes -Gears can get pretty hard), and the plot was WAY too good to complain about not doing anything, but I really don't know if I could stomach a WHOLE GAME like that...

While I'm at it, here's some more questions: How's the difficulty in Saga, in relation to Gears? One of my FAVORITE parts about Gears was how well done it was in the difficulty department. It was almost always TRICKY, but never IMPOSSIBLE with the right equipment. In fact, I only think I've had to stop and level up once, before you fight Id in the place where you wake up Emeralda. Also, how good is the plot? I realize that it's a series, so it won't have a "complete" plot, but how does it stack up against most games (I don't think it could POSSIBLY be better than that of Gears)?

On a side note, I'm at the last save point in Gears! I'm going to use Fei, Citan, and Emeralda for the final battle, is that a good party? 'Cause I sure think it is. (ya I know about the orb thingies).

Come on, Shin, You should know that Billy is much more useful on foot than in a gear; practically all of the final dungeon is in gears. Plus, Emeralda has ther best offensive Ethers and is the fastest character in the game. If you giver her double Power Magic and Speed Shoes then she can own any random battle monsters in the game, while Billy's healing magic isn't effective in a Gear. The only really bad characters in XG are Maria on foot and an unabused Chu-Chu. Any other combination will work wonders. Oh, and Shinjutsei,
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Emeralda isn't exactly a little girl, and she doesn't have to look like a little girl at the end of the game. If you work through the Lighthouse dungeon, you discover that she was created by Fei's past life (for lack of a better description) Kim, and upon learning the truth about herself, Emeralda's form ages 10 years or so to an adult appearance, with cooler-looking combos.

Hmm, yeah, that's true. I do believe though that Citan is faster, honestly. But you choose him too, so go you. As much as I like Emeralda, I still love the character of Billy. I dunno, he just is very badass to me. But you're right, Emeralda is teh shit. Oh well.

Yeah, Billy may be super awesome, but.. Idunno, I really like Emeralda, she's a really original character, and the adult version has AWESOME looking moves (actually, kid Emeralda does, too, but whatever).

My stance on Xenosaga is this:

Xenogears is a much, much better game. Period. Too bad the two games aren't related (it was confirmed by the creator quite a few times, let's not debate this), because if they were, Gears could have saved Saga from itself.

Ah, now I am one of the very few defenders of Rico, so I have to comment. On foot, Rico's bad speed and not-as-good-as-Fei-or-Citan attack make him a decent, but lower-tier character. Stier and his Omnigear, however, have the highest HP in the game and are behind only Fei's final gear in attack power. On foot he isn't the greatest (but still capable of kicking an ass or two), but in a gear he is one of the better characters in the game, certainly better than Billy, Bart, and maybe Maria.

Laszlow, you make some good points... what you say about Stier and his Omnigear is perfectly true, and I really should have specified when I commented earlier. In gear, Rico is in fact better than Billy and Bart.

This is why I think that Rico on foot is just plain horrible: I can get 2 to 3 attacks in for everyone else in the time it takes Rico to do 1. Even though almost everyone does less than him, they end up doing more damage because they get more attacks than him.

Yeah, I didn't use Rico much at all. Maria is t3h uber l33t. She's also a great character, mainly 'cause of her plotline and themesong.

Oh, and for the record... I beat it! YAAAAAAAAAY! The ending... it was good, not GREAT.

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
I like the fact that nobody died. A bittersweet ending is GREAT when well done (like FFX, loved that ending), but I didn't want any good guys to die in THIS game. Luckily, nobody did! I really didn't like the fact that it was way too anime-ish. I mean, I didn't MIND the fact that it was anime art, but I mean the actual CONTENT of the ending. It's like a lot of other anime endings in the sense that you don't get ANY info on what happens "afterward." You just see Xenogears descending, and everyone's happy, and... that's it. On the other hand, I LOVED the ending theme song. Not uber-pop-ish like ending themes usually are. It was just an all around great song.

I'm still debating where this game places in my favorites. Of course it's in the top three, but man, now there's THREE games tied for 1st, not just two (Gears, Chrono Cross, and FFVI). I'm gonna hafta make up my mind sooner or later...

I got Xenosaga on Monday, and it is SWEET! Right now I'm at the part where

I are t3h liking t3h Xenosag4. Nah but seriously, it's really good! I absolutely LOVE that battle system and the character development system, it is SO well done. I heard that XS2 completely dumps all of that in favor of a simpler system, correct? That's a darn shame, 'cause Xenosaga has some of the gameplay I've seen since Chrono Cross and Xenogears! The only complaint I have is that it's not really worth it to use A.G.W.S's, I just fight on foot the entire time. But whaddyagonnado.

i had a ? for anyone who has played Xenosaga Episode 1. i just got a hold of a used copy from EB and have played for about 5 hours. so far the graphics have astonished me! theyre great! i love most aspects of the game and it seems like it is on its way to being one of my faves of all time. i just wanted to know what you all thought about it. and, although i do not have Episode 2 (plan on gettin it as soon as i beat this one!) how is that one as well? thanx guys!

Probably missed this topic because you didn't realize Xenosaga wasn't Square-Enix. Or maybe you just didn't search. smile.gif -R51
