I've never played the game, so please excuse the simple question. Did they (the game's creators) say that Cid built The Highwind himself, or did they just not specify? Thanks.

The Highwind was not built by Cid. Remember how you get it in the game?

You end up stealing the Highwind from Shinra while busting Tifa and Barret out of jail. The crew knows Cid because of his fame in the space program and join up with him because he's such a great guy...compared to Shinra, anyway. Until then, Cid had never been on board the Highwind. I guess that doesn't completely rule out the possibility of him having built it before defecting from Shinra, but it's a stretch.

Hmmm... I thought he at least designed it?

I agree. I seem to recall Cid being involved in the design and creation process, and that at some point in the game he talks about how Shrina "took the Highwind away" from him.

What Phoenix said. Also, his name is "Cid Highwind" so that would imply the airship was named after him. I don't think that would happen unless he was at least the designer.

Random people don't get ships named after them, so yeah, it's a good possibilty.

If I remember correctly, Cid was at very least a pilot of the airship. He may have been the test pilot, and in his honour, the prototype and possibly entire class of airship was named after him. Perhaps it was a failed project, but the orginal prototype was retained as a Shinra museum peice. Or maybe the rest of them were lost during the war to enemy action.

Since he was the Pilot, Pilots get a bit funny about a plane they like, so they start to think the plane that cost, say $3million of Taxpayers dollars is thiers, and so, get a little upset when the plane is taken away from them. So, if he was selected for the space program, and then rejected to return as pilot of the Highwind after it's failure, and so, was promptly very annoyed at the company.

Of course, I'm probably wrong.

Well, he is intimately familiar with the ship, and was able to pilot it completely by himself (not something that's easy to do with an unfamiliar craft). The darn thing is named after him, and he is very fond of it.
I have to disagree with the statement that he'd never been on board. While they never mentioned just how involved he was in it's construction, I imagine he probably headed it up and/or tested it; then later went on to the space program.

One thing I was always curious about was why there were no subsequent airships. If the Highwind is a prototype, it is one hell of a well designed and made prototype (remember, biys and girls, prototype means they are testing out the technology, and usually takes a few tries to get it right, if it works it all), and armed to the teeth. I certainly would want a fleet of them. The theories I came up with: no more were made because the war was over, and funds were diverted to other programs. More were made, but destroyed (but why not this one?). And, some were made, but without Cid's oversight, they are poor copies and didn't work.

Yeah, I'd opt for the 'diverting of funds' explanation. Shinra seems to be a company that has random managorial shifts. Thus, some tech head thought it would be a fabulous project, took it up, constructed it and it probably cost a lot.
But, his time was up, someone else was hired or he was forcibly ordered to another project, thus only the prototype was created and no others.

*shrugs*

It seems to be a thing big companies do.

Also on the second disc,

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
he talks about how there are things bothering him about the ship, something seems different

and then at the end of the second disc,

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
he pulls the levers and knobs that have been bothering him, and the highwind becomes rocket powered.

and wasn't he mentioning when rufus visits him, he exclaims, first the highwind, then space, now you're taking the tiny bronco too?

to add on to jenny's post, i'd say that the highwind that you get is either a) a ship of the same class that cid either designed or piloted or 2) a new class of ship based on the prototype - because, while cid was intimately familiar with it, it did have 2 new overdrives that he had obviously not been around for

well all i know for sure is that cid owned it at one point and he was its pilot, but it might have been financed by shinra like the tiny bronco and the rocket

which is why shinra was able to take them away from him

but there is no certainty

Just some relevent bits

Possible spoilers: highlight to view

Cid: "You know Shinra developed a lot of technological gadgets during the
meaningless war, right? Now it's a Mako company, but in the old days it was a
weapons manufacturer. Well, they came up with a Rocket Engine. There was so
much excitement about the thought of going into outer space. Our dreams got
bigger and bigger. They put a major budget into it and made prototype after
prototype! Finally, they completed Shinra No. 26. They chose the best pilot in
Shinra-- no, in the world-- me. I mean, come on. And finally we get to the day
of the launch. Everything was goin' well... But, because of that dumb-ass
Shera, the launch got messed up. That's why they became so anal! And so, Shinra
nixed their outer space exploration plans. After they told me how the future
was Space Exploration and got my damn hopes up... DAMN THEM! Then, it was all
over once they found out Mako energy was profitable. They didn't even so much
as look at space exploration. Money, moola, dinero! My dream was just a
financial number for them! Look at this busted Rocket. I was supposed to be the
first man
in space with this."

Cid: "Welcome to my airship- the Highwind!"

Thats all I could find in the script sofar. My guess is he was trusted with leading all the test piloting of Shin-Ra's aviation technologies.
