As some of you may know, and may have watched, the next generation X Box 360 was unveiled officially on MTV. I Watched the unveiling and wasn't really impressed. I lilke the new sleek design, but that's about it. Nothing really breathtaking, the graphics don't seem to have improved too much. But that could just be because the game devoplers haven't really gotten used to the system. Disapointing that Rare went to Microsoft though, Perfect Dark Zero is on the X Box 360 instead of the Revolution.
But anyways did any of you watch the event? What are your thoughts on the system? |

Well, thats what I'm thinking from the BBC news section. It's not going to be a woeful failure, and at least it's no longer the size of a fridge, but the specs don't sound too impressive any more. I'm growing more and more alienated from graphics, and XBox 360 seems to have done a 360 on the graphics issue...
IE it's still all about the shineys, not the gameplays. Rare might help with getting something with gameplay back but these console wars are going to be the fanboys arguing on graphics. Again. It's strange. Only Revolution sounds like it might be of interest to the sane, non 'graphics make the game' crew. Picture it like three cars on a motorway: PS3's chasing XBox down the junction to stop at McDonalds or Burger King, whilst Revolutions drving on the motorway to go to a proper resteraunt that might not look as good, but it's far better and more enjoyable when you think about it. However, on the graphical issues, the potentials are high: XBox is squeezing it's best out just now, as is PS2 and GC, and since the gap is, well, not that much now, it won't be much then. However, I don't give a flying one if it's a nice looker, it's gotta be fun too. Practically everything on XBox these days has a counterpart as good as or better on another console or on PC. I must say, an MTV launch just seems very silly to me. As if people didn't already know XBox was stereotypically for the MTV generation of leet haxxors and other mentally-challenged peoples, they launch it on MTV, the most popular channel for the single-figure IQ'ed viewer! ![]() My commiserations to the 80% of sane smart XBoxers who aren't fanboys at the fact the other 20% will think XBox so much cooler for 'beeing on teh mtv roxxoring!' and then kicking off a bunch of illogicla flamewars with fanboys of Sony and Ninty. I didn't like XBox before as it had nothing to offer to me. It still has little to offer. If it's all the same to you, I'll stick with the PS2, GC and PC for a while yet. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

I agree. The only impressive game there graphically was Project Gotham Racing 3. Other than that, the original XBox could've played. NOT a step forward.
With what the PS3 and Rev can do, I'd say the choice is clear. I will get both PS3 and Rev, and NEVER XBox. Seriously, its disappointing. The future is now. Well Mogmaster, the PS3 and PC has that also. Besides, it actually looks like a great game, though the graphics arent its strongpoint.

High Definition TV resolutions blah blah blah...
Looking at the screenshots of some of the games in developement, the graphics really don't look that much better than what we're already used to. That will improve over time though as developers catch up to the technology of a machine that's supposedly 5 to 6 times more powerful than the original X-Box. The graphics better end up being photorealistic or few people will see a need to buy the 360, Halo fanatics aside. -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! From what I've seen, I wasn't impressed by the 360's graphics. I probably won't purchase it anyway. Besides, I don't even have an X-Box.
If there's any next gen system I'm gonna buy, it will be the PS3. I have a drawer full of PS1 and PS2 games. Backwards compatibility is one of the Playstation's good qualities. This post has been edited by Shadow Monroe on 20th May 2005 22:30 |

I would have to say, any game, where's graphics ARE it's strong point, really isn't worth buying. Since the new X-box comes out sooner, I'm hoping that everyone will blow their money on it and then not have enough when the PS3 comes out. That's the extent to which I care.

All of this graphics discussion is irritating me. If you want a new console, it should ALWAYS be about the software and not the hardware. Wait awhile, look at the respective libraries and upcoming games, and base your decision off of that. That argument is even less important nowadays with more and more games being released across all three platforms, but it's the only valid argument there is because, let's face it, all three of the next generation of consoles are capable of amazing visuals. Which pictures are prettier hardly matters.
My plan is going to be the exact same as it was for the current generation of consoles. Wait two years, get the console which has the most games I want to play, then wait another few years, and get the other two consoles when the prices drop and there are several games for each of the other two consoles that I want to play. That way I was able to get a PS2 at $150, a GC at $75, and an XBOX at $100, with all of the games I wanted out for at least two years and at beautifully low prices. It also made me feel less guilty about giving away my Dreamcast and Saturn (which I also got gloriously cheap; I got my Dreamcast and four games for sixty bucks, twenty bucks of which was Soul Calibur). -------------------- |

It's a smart way to go about it monetary-wise sure, but personally I just couldn't wait that long. While all your buddies are playing and talking about the new games, it'd be like "Yeah, umm...that's cool. I'll just go back to playing my old games that nobody talks about anymore." You know? IMO, video games are more fun when taken to the social level. I know I used to call my sister over (who pretended to care) just because no one else was around and be like "Whoa, look at this! I'm awesome at this." I think I'm going to be sticking with sony on this one, mostly because of the backwards capability. Question, is the X-box 360 supposed to be a stronger machine in comparison to the PS3 as it was this generation? I've been wondering that for a while now.. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

That social aspect of gaming is certainly a very valid point, but I'm sure that all of my gamer friends will have the newest fighters and HALO ready whenever I come over ![]() -------------------- |

You'd think that Microsoft would come out on top in early showings, but the X-box 360 is the least impressive next-gen console at this point in time. Nintendo piques the curiosity with its mysterious Revolution and Sony blows your mind with the capabilities of the PS3, but all the X-box 360 really amounts to is a sub-par PC that happens to play video games. Whereas the X-box was clearly the most powerful console of its generation, it seems that the 360 will not hold that title at all, taking away Microsoft's main selling point. Likewise, the quality of exclusive content for the X-box (outside of Halo) is notoriously poor, a trend which will doubtless worsen going into the next generation. The only thing the 360 really has going for it at this point is a comparatively early release date, though I don't plan to pick one up just out of impatience.
Everyone was talking about how the X-box and its derivatives were posed to wrest the number one spot from Sony after its initial run, but from what I can tell so far, they don't even have a chance. Unless something drastic happens between now and the holiday season (or Sony and Nintendo screw their respective launches up to impossible proportions), I can't see how the X-box 360 is supposed to succeed. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L.
