I'm writing fanfic, and had a few questions concerning the parents of each character. While I've done a bit of research, I'm sure I must have missed a few details, and wondered if any of you knew something I missed.
Cloud's mother is seen in the Nibelheim flashbacks (a bit of side curiousity: I think she has a unique model (or sprite, for lack of a more presice term), but I'm not 100% sure). It doesn't say specifically that she perished in the fires, but if she didn't, then she was probably one of those survivors rounded up by Hojo. I think Cloud mentions his dad once, that he either left or died when he was young, but I don't remember which. Aeris's parents are both dead, as is the husband of her adoptive mother (though she never met him). Not much ambiguity there. Tifa's mom died when she was young (I recall something mentioning her dying in Mt Nibel while guiding someone through, but that might have been a fanfic, or just confusion with the myth that her spirit will pass through the mountain). Tifa's dad was killed in the Nibelheim Mako reactor when he confronted Sephiroth. Again, not too many questions there. Barret's parents get no mention, but considering his age and the harsh conditions of pop's likely profession (mining), they are probably long in thier graves, or killed when Corel was burned. If either one was dead, his loyalty would probably have him watching over them or something. Also, I too easily confuse Myrna and Elanor; which was Barret's wife and which was Dyne's? Same with Cid; but again, I can't separate game from fic in my hazy memory, wasn't his dad mentioned as a pilot? Yuffie's dad is Godo, of course. I think some mention is made of her mother being dead. Cait has no parents, and no mention is made of Reeve's. Or anyone in Shinra, for that matter, except Rufus's dad (no mention of Mother Shinra, however). Same with Vincent, though we can infer that both are probably long dead. Red XIII's pop was Seto, and was turned to stone fighting the Gi (I always wondered, if there were enough Gi left to stone him, why didn't they continue the attack?). His mom raised him for a while after. How did she die? Once again, I have a memory of being told she was captured by Shinra and died in captivity, but I'm not sure if it's from the game or fanfics. Was her name ever mentioned? Did she know the truth about her husband, and if so, why did she let her son think wrongly of him? So, any thoughts or discrepancies? I think Cloud's mother died when Sephiroth burned Nibelheim, but I'm not sure if she really did or not.
I also think Cloud mentions that his father died when he was very young. |

Thought: why do most RPG characters come from somehow-troubled or misfortunate families, where one or both parents (or more if adoption is included) are often scarred in some way, missing, or dead? The list you provided here, for FFVII, is quite a good example of this.

Methinks it'd have something to do with the emotional strength side of things:
"Each character already hardened to lifes cruelties by loosing a loved one at an early age..." I for one, wouldn't like some smarmy, over-protected mummy's boy to get caught up in a fight for the safety of the planet whilst they're on their way to the shop for a loaf of bread. You can't protect the human race if you've not proven your worth already - can you? Quote (bahamut0013) It doesn't say specifically that she perished in the fires, but if she didn't, then she was probably one of those survivors rounded up by Hojo. I think Cloud mentions his dad once, that he either left or died when he was young, but I don't remember which. It's implied that she died. In Cloud's version of the flashback, he went into his mother's house and came out shaking his head sadly. While the true version of events doesn't show Zack going into the house and coming out like that, with Cloud laying in the courtyard wounded not far from the house, it's safe to assume that he looked in on her at some point before going to the Mako Reactor. As for his dad, in Kalm, he will say that his father died when he was very young. As for the others, no mention is made of how Tifa's mom died, of Cid's dad being a pilot (or any mentioning of him at all), or of Yuffie's mother at all. As for Reeve, his parents can be seen in one of the rooms in the Honey Bee Inn. They're an older couple that mention their son having gotten them the room and they think it was too high class for them. We can infer that they are Reeve's parents because of the miniature Cait Sith in the room. In regard to Seto, the arrows that petrified him likely didn't take effect immediately, so he was probably still able to fight for a while. Bugenhagen says that Nanaki's mother did know the truth of what happened with Seto, but he says that it was her and Seto's wish that the cave be sealed off and forgotten, which would probably be why no mention was ever made of the truth to Nanaki by Bugenhagen. Nanaki's mother, by the way, also died in battle defending the Canyon according to Nanaki. I think you got Ifalna (Aerith's mother) dying after being in Shin-Ra's captivity confused with this matter. Finally, Myrna was Barret's wife and Elanor was Dyne's. Let us know if you have more questions. Ah, you see, I'd completely overlooked the old couple in the Honeybee Inn.
Thanks for clearing my foggy memory up, but I do have one question: I was sure somewhere in the game it was mentioned that Nanaki's mother was in captivity, I just assumed that was where she died (she probably escaped and made it home to her son). Was this really mentioned? -------------------- |
