Yeah. Those battles that make you tear your hair out, forcing you to pay a whopping fee for hair implants or wear a ridiculous hat for the next several months. It's NOT because the boss itself is difficult - that can usually be remedied quite easily by leveling (in most RPG's) or by developing some sure-fire strategy through trial 'n' error - but because the battle's annoying for some reason or another, involves some poorly conceived gimmick, or is just, well, frustrating.
Recently I've been replaying LoZ: A Link to the Past for the first time in, like, years and I seemed to forget just how much I hated the Moldorm battle. It doesn't help that Link runs like frozen molasses and, once you've hit the weak spot five times, it can easily knock you from one edge of the platform clear off the one across from it and back to the fifth floor, forcing you to climb back upstairs and start the battle over. Even using the Pegasus Shoes strategy still requires some luck. Or maybe it's just 'cause I haven't played many action-oriented games lately and I'm loosing my knack. I know I've played through much worse, but that's still kinda fresh in my mind at the moment. What's your biggest pain-in-the-ass boss battle(s)? Going through FFT the first time... the battle with Wiegraf at the end of the 3rd chapter. Must've foughten that battle at least 50 times before starting a new game.

Death from the first Castlevania and the Rock Monster from the first Mega Man (without using the pause-unpause trick) were my first real hair-pullers, but now it has to be the final version of Sigma from Mega Man X4. Not only is it insanely difficult (I still can't beat it playing as Zero), it uses a really silly looking technique of launching out fire, ice, and lightning spewing colorful Sigma heads. Yeesh.
The only boss battle that I might hate more is Fire Leo from Viewtiful Joe. He's basically a huge, hell-firey lion that can do up to four damage in a single attack (when there are no attacks from any other enemy in the entire game that do more than 2 damage). I consider myself a skilled gamer, particularly with 2D action games, and I've only beaten that mofo twice (once as Joe, once as Dante). Don't even try on the higher difficulty levels. Weird how those Capcom boss battles really get to me, huh? I love their games, but they sure know how to make some tough bosses. -------------------- |

leopaldon from guilty gear isuka. i have no damn clue what the hell that thing is, but it beats my ass most of the time. on good days i can keep that thing in check, but its still freakin tough.
and i really hate indalecio from star ocean 2 (i think thats how you spell his name). before him, theres that one dude who yells "spicule!" all the time, but i dont remember his name. barely got past that ass too..ugh.. -------------------- "The answer is, of course, that it would be best to be both loved and feared. Bloody Mary from Terranigma.
Anyone who's played this game knows why, but for those who haven't: Ok, your guy has about 250 life at most at this point of the game, and she has about 350 hp. Usually, you hit for about 40-50 per attack without a critical. No problem, right? Wrong! Whenever you get near her, you are automatically hit for about 40-50 damage per couple of seconds and because of her high defense, your strongest attack hits for around 6 if you're lucky. Top it all off with a bunch of ranged attacks (and the fact that she's invincible while using them), and you have one hell of an annoying boss fight. Finally, after much trail and error (and going through, literally, a full inventory of healing items) I beat her. Oh, and keep in mind, she's not an opptional fight. You have to beat her to continue through the game! ![]() -------------------- ~ Aurora, exhale bloody air! Dark Holy! ~ |

Another one I've always hated: Clancy's first form in Ninja Gaiden 3. His attacks aren't that bad...until you actually hit him. Then he attempts to blast you with loads of lightning which, in theory, should be easy to dodge. 'Cept not, 'cause the collision detection doesn't appear to be up to snuff; I'd constantly take damage even when I obviously wasn't struck. Pretty cheap and illogical.
That just always really irked me. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. Moldorm from A Link to the Past. He's easy enough until the end, and then, darn it! -- he knocks you off the edge and you have to start all over.

The solo Llednar battle from FF TA.
I really love that game since I've started playing it, but that battle is a horrible one. The freaky little bastard is invincible and can in his first turn run up to you and kill you with Omega. That's about a 66 % chance he does that. The point is to survive for four or five turns, and you can't really do anything but run around the chamber. If he uses Omega, you die. If you succeeds at that Poison-thing-a-thingy he does, you die a few turns later (Poison is surprisingly effective in that game). The more serious Slash/Flea battles and the final Slash/Flea/Ozzy battle from CT. They're laughing and moving and going 'Here, have some DOOM with your coffee'. Worst of all is the Golem battle from Tales of Phantasia, though. Those flying missiles of mass destruction are impossible to hit once you've managed to actually locate them. It's like the Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, only, you know, they're actually there. -------------------- |

I never found Moldorm that hard. I encountered the same problem of being knocked over the edge, but my little brother craftly suggested that you dash through its head, and that's how I've beat it ever since. Blind the Thief was the game's annoyance for me. =p
In Wild ARm3, the boss at the end of the second Nidhogg Pass (Balazs) always gave me a run for my money. He has a skill called Outer World that halves everyone's HP and makes himself invincible for the duration of the turn. You have to have some luck to hit him from the time Outer World ends and from the time he gets his turn again (Accelerator helps sometimes). Even worse, if the characters'HP gets too low, he'll start picking 'em off with Agony Effect. If you're not properly leveled for the fight, you're going to lose nine times out of ten. The Marjoly battle in Disgaea gave me some trouble, but only until I got a Divine Majin with over-the-top spear compatibility. The Omega skills and Dark Conjuration are enough to deplete the characters' HP, so throwing out low-leveled characters as decoys was a nice save. Winning without that DM would have been extremely hard, considering there are two high-leveled healers accompanying Marjoly in battle. [EDIT] - I just realized "Llednar" backwards is "Randell". Didn't know that. This post has been edited by Shotgunnova on 14th May 2005 22:23 -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

*shivers* Oh my... Bloody Mary from Terranigma... I had compleatly blocked that out, but... *shivers*
Sigma from Megaman X 4 was tough in his final form. Expecially with Zero. His other two forms are a breeze with Zero though. By far, the worst Boss battle ever is Cloud of Darkness from FF3. Possible spoilers: highlight to view He has one attack, that hit's everyone for loads of damage. If you do not enter the final dungon prepared, you're SOL, because you CAN'T LEAVE! The only tactic that works decent against him is having your two Ninja's throw Shurikens every round... Of course, if you don't BUY enough Shuriken's... You can't leave the dungon. To make the boss a little easier, you can kill his for guardians, which are still very tough, and will help lower his HP, but he still has a massive ammount of HP. *shiver* -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Plus, when I fought him, I was severly underleveled....I was only like level 55. I later found out that I was supposed to be level 65-70 Another hard and hated fight was Polter Armor from Legend of Dragoon. Good lord.....He has 3 targets, each one is really strong, and capable of taking a large chunk of your party's hp away, but here's the worst part: Every time you kill a part, the person who killed it dies. Therefore, as if killing him wasn't bad enough, one of your party members is guarrenteed to miss out on the great exp that he gives you ![]() -------------------- ~ Aurora, exhale bloody air! Wrexsoul. If I'm going to complete a game, I'm going to do everything, and that whole section was quite the pain in the ass. Though I occassionally Vanish/Doom him, I like to beat him the old fashioned way. And I'm useless at it.

Silent Hill, end boss, biggest let-down to a absolutey class game.
As for toughness, well, I don't know the name of the game, but my friend has a cabinet with a Japanese R-Type sort of game, we've completed a few times, but that is one tough end boss! In FFT I hated the battle at Riovannes Castle against Velius. After beating Weigraf with relative ease, this battle I had a real hard time with. The battle at Limberry Castle against Marquis Elmdor and his assassins is another tough one putting the numerous statuses into perspective with limited status protection. I''ll attempt to steal his Genji equipment and Masamune this time around as I have yet to try.

Whatever it is you fight at the end of Suikoden III. (I think I remember, but it would be a spoiler, anyway.) I never did manage it. The camera angle rotates so much that you can't see whether or not you're doing any damage half the time. Grr.

Quote (Moglv99 @ 18th May 2005 17:28) Megaman VI:(nes) Tomahawkman (I found him hard to beat) I'm surprised you found Tomahawk Man difficult. I could beat all 8 of the MM6 bosses with only the Mega Buster, a feat I usually find nearly impossible on a typical MM game. Although that reminds me, there're a number of other MM bosses who are complete pains in the rear end: Quick Man (MM2): EVEN IF you have the Time Stopper/Timefreeze, that (fully charged) still does only half of his energy bar worth of damage (and then there's his friggin' stage). So you STILL have to outmaneuver him in order to win. And that's NOT EASY. Ring Man (MM4): Another very fast and sharp-aiming robot master. Even with his weakness, it's still quite hard to beat him. Crystal Man (MM5): If his stage wasn't annoying enough (think falling diamonds), he's also quite hard to hit. His attacks are relatively easier to dodge than those of Quick Man or Ring Man, but he's got better evasion. Skull Tank (MM5): Bouncy blue balls of doom, and then some. Weakness is the Super Arrow, if you still have any. Dark Man (MM5): Somehow, his attack pattern is very predictable and rather easily evadable, but he still turns out as one one of the more difficult bosses. I don't quite know why... Slash Man (MM7): UGH. F#$%ing red gunk paint balls of doom. And once you've been 'painted', you can't avoid his zoom attack. How. Annoying. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Megaman X2: Magna Centipede with X-Buster. He'll suck your abilities out one by one. Just pray that he doesn't take your X-Buster or your dashing away, otherwise you're screwed.
Megaman X4: Cyber Peacock with Zero and just his Z Saber. Pain in the rear to attack becaue because your attacks are short-ranged and don't do much damage. Even worse to defend against because he fires off around six homing missiles at you. They come at you individually, but they're fast and have excellent tracking. Seiken Densetsu 3: Bill and Ben. Engaging them in close combat makes this fight relatively easy, but if you're very spell dependent and cast a lot of spells, they'll counterattack with their ninjutsu, which will hurt A LOT more. Guess who died around fifteen times before he finally realized the connection, and then cried when he saw that he had a fighter, a sorceress, and a cleric in his party (read: two magic users, one very slow melee char). I don't even want to think about Terranigma's Bloody Mary again. I leveled up 2 or 4 levels above what you're supposed to be and I STILL had a tough time with her. I was just glad my attacks were doing 15-20 instead of 6. This post has been edited by RoyalKnight on 20th May 2005 09:22 |

Well, the first battles that come to mind are a slew of Boss battles for various old games, where there's really no strategy to it. You just have to slash and slash and slash at these things and dodge their ridiculously strong attacks. These were games with no leveling up involved, sooo...
Second was the Battle with Ultros on the Lete river. I love Ultros, but that battle always had me on the edge of my seat wondering if Bannon's frail self could withstand a tentacle attack from our octopus friend. I can't remember the times I'd had to do that bit over again before I realized that Bannon ought to go in the back row. Oy... Finaly, I don't know how many of you have played Skies of Arcadia Legends, but I must say that this game is home to the most obnoxious of all bosses. First, it's important to understand that in Skies of Arcadia, as you level up, your bosses level up with you. With this in mind, think of having your party, with all it's strengths, turned against you. That's right. A bunch of imposters posing as you is ruining your reputation, and It's up to you to stop them. Problem is, they've also took the time to learn some of your best moves, and don't need to wait to build up their spirit points like you do to use them. They slaughtered me every time until I just got cheap... -------------------- TURKEY! - (The only way not to get blocked for using Fowl Language) |

Easiest way to beat Vize, Anita and Faina: use justice shield and delta shield every turn, pound Faina with Cutlass Fury. Then stop using delta shield every turn and save up for cutlass fury/pirates' wrath on Anita. Then take care of Vize with whatever you want. DO NOT try and save up for a Crew Special or Prophecy, because you NEED Justice Shield, Lunar Winds, and Lunar Light. I thought that Skies of Arcadia had some difficult boss battles for RPG standards and that's great. There are too many RPGs that reward the mindless level-upper instead of the decent strategist.
BTW, IMO the hardest battle in Skies of Arcadia: Legends is the hidden ninth bounty, which is one of the endgame secrets after you get all the discoveries, crew members, bounties, and ship battles. Possible spoilers: highlight to view Fighting Vigoro for a third time. He has something like 60,000 HP and his four attacks: super-powerful attack on one character , moderately-powerful attack to all characters, super-powerful attack in a line (his most powerful attack, only when he's low), and Icrem (maybe an Increm item). Not fun. I was only able to beat him because I had spent all of my availalble funds on getting stat-up items so Vyse's attack power and Aika's magic power were both 999. Edit I forgot to end the spoiler bracket. This post has been edited by laszlow on 25th May 2005 15:31 -------------------- |

The trick to beating Wiegraf in Riovannes is using Yell(or Scream, if the battle is in the 4th chapter, it's been so long since I've played it I don't remember) just go around yelling, building up Ramza's speed until Ramza acts two or three times every time Wiegfraf does. Have a high movement, place yourself to avoid some attacks. It takes time, but it works. Get Ramza runnig around with a speed thats astronomical, and Wiegfraf is nothing. Best of all, the speed carries over to the next fight.
As for myself, I'd say Ruby Weapon (FFVII) from seven, mostly because, when I was prepped, I beat Emerald with ease, but couldn't even damage Ruby, but that might not count. The only truly annoying enemy boss i've put up with (I have a dendency to power up alot and have very-strong characters, so bosses don't usually give me much trouble) was X-Death's final form(FFV). I had been going through that dungeon for ever, and when he beat me, I didn't want to have to leave it, power up, and then go back in, and traverse the dungeon. After he beat me, I noticed how much money I had. I went in with everyone as Samurais and GP tossed him to death. My most difficult Boss battles:
Aps in FFVII-No Materia=Very High Difficulty Atma Weapon in FFVI-Until I learned the Vanish/Doom Trick. This guy had some very powerful magic. Garland in FFIX-No chance to heal between his fight and fight with Silver Dragon, so you have to fight Garland right after almost being defeated by the Silver Dragon. Final Battle with Dr. Robotnik in Sonic & Knuckles Dr. Wily in Mega Man IV-I ran out of ammo on the only weapon that could reach him -------------------- Ultimately a man must travel his chosen path alone. |

I found LoZ : Wind Waker easy, but the boss battle in the quicksand (can't remember his name) when little snakes jump up and hit you and you have to hookshot the guy in the middle, and he always beat me to the punch. I managed to beat him both times, but i only just got away, having used my bottles already!
