Disgaea remains my all-time fave RPG. Nippon Ichi games are usually always great, but Disgaea wins hands down.
Hehe, don't threat, I have over 400 hours on that game now. =P Prinny Baal can be hard, but you should try to steal his stuff, it is awesome. Also, remember that it 'is' a past stage, so as long as you can damage him, you can beat him. It's quite possible to use Geo Change now. Although beating the prinny form won't net you anything new, you can steal his equipment as many times as you like, but you'll need a pretty built thief. I think mine was about 3500 or something there abouts... Right now I'm playing La Pucelle though. As I'm in the EU I get all the neat extras like New Game plus! But now I need to beat La Pucelle's Baal...because after him, as some of the added extras, you get to fight Disgaea Baal. =3 -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

After playing Disgaea I had the urge to play both La Pucelle and Phantom Brave. Both have good reviews. I played Phanton Brave and it sucks horribly. I have yet to play La Pucelle for fear of it sucking. |

Yeah, Phantom Brave isn't great... The story's kinda' cute but the battle system is just to ugh. I finally got around to fighting Baal though...he's pretty much just an Eringa...(Eringa's are the mascots of La Pucelle that look descidedly like pinched nipples when they do their 'piston' motion).
As for La Pucelle, it's much better than Phantom Brave. After all it was made before Disgaea and you can really see where the battle system came from. Although personally I much preffer Disgaea. =P It's nice to see where Prier comes from though, and it's much more open-ended than Disgaea. Although it only has one final ending many of the chapters have several ways to end (Bad, Normal, Good, or Special). Only trouble is, if you're in the US, there's no new game plus. Which is ashame. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I have over 200+ hours on Disgaea and loved it (got bored after I got a few Hyperdrives), but I think it's safe to say that I'd rather play Phantom Brave. The decision may be flawed since I'm still burnt out from Disgaea, but I'll stick with it.
Phantom Brave's story is childish for sure, but the battle system makes up for all of it. You can use just about every feasable object on the map--from skulls to rocks, fish to sunflowers--to wail on enemies, and what's more is that you can combine skills into other weapons. Skills are interchangable (to a degree) so you can pile as many skills as you want into different weapons. Disgaea powered up items through the Item World monsters, and you had to shift those around into armor you'd use, etc. Since I've gotten through my fifth or sixth cycle, that's about the only fate that's left for me. The thought of powering up the armor and weapons until they can do pile on the eight- or nine-digit numbers is something that I can't bother to do (although doing millions of damage sounds top notch, regardless). Phantom Brave lets you accumulate mana in your characters and weapons through battle and you can use a Blacksmith character to meld items, power up the confinement and equipment levels, and change around skills. I commend Disgaea for its painstaking difficulty (at points) but PB wins out in that respect. Nippon Ichi rocks at those strategy RPGs, and I think they're making some high-quality games. I'd still give Disgaea the highest rating possible, just for the don't-take-yourself-seriously attitude and the one-liners. One can't always play the uber-hero who chases the uber-baddie--that aspect gets boring quickly. By the way, Phantom Brave's Hell Corgi monsters are the funniest things since Prinnies. -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Phantom Brave's story isn't that childish...like any Nippon Ichi game it only seems it on the surface. He does like his little jokes. ^^ But the scene after the battle with Sprout sure proves how unchildish it 'can' be.
![]() Anyway I always considered the Nippon series to be the FF of the SRPG world. Just because one isn't to your taste, doesn't mean the next won't be solid. Although I was sad to see the lack of Succubus in PB...she's kinda' a Nippon token monster... Personally I can't wait for the release of Makai Kingdom! -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I've only had limited playing time on it, but it's a fun game; it lampoons RPGs with everything it does (especially the insane leveling degree) and is an excellent SRPG/TRPG at the same time. I'd buy it, but I'm pretty sure they've stopped producing it, so the price will likely never get below $40... so it'll be awhile.
And Mu, calling any series other than Fire Emblem the FF of SRPGs is a travesty. The Nippon series has been around for barely four years, when the first Fire Emblem (out of nine) hit Japan on the NES in 1990 and has kept core gameplay and style intact while remaining very popular and somewhat progressive (exactly as Final Fantasy has). Only recently has its popularity reached a US fanbase (which I only recently joined; I'm not claiming to be some kind of stuffy, pretentious import gamer), but it still has the legacy and classic value that Nippon Ichi doesn't have, yet. -------------------- |

That's not what I meant. I meant that each of the games is a totally different story with a totally different battle system attached to it, only in SRPG form.
Also the first Nippon Ichi game to hit US (although not UK) shores was Rhapsody made in 1998. That being the game that Myao and her witch sisters are from... and before that he was involved in the making of games and even anime that never left the Japanese shores. In Japan his name is even more powerful than that of any of the FF staff (gasp!) as he is in total charge of his games and not under the control of a larger cooperation (as the FF staff are under Square Enix, Nippon Ichi is only under Nippon Ichi). The only reason his games never made it here until now is because much of the material is very adult, religious, or violent.. and western gaming standards about such things were VERY tight (you may note that in La Pucelle even today the mermaids have had their breasts edited out). -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Ummm... Nippon Ichi isn't someone's name, just the developer company's name. I'm pretty sure it means something along the lines of "number one", but I'm no Japanese scholar.
I have to still disagree. First of all, Rhapsody sucked. A lot. And dating from 1998 is still eight years shorter than dating from 1990. While the battle system differences are much more drastic in the Nippon Ichi games (not bad drastic, just bigger differences), there are still only four SRPGs they've developed (I think... IGN lists several games but Rhapsody, Disgaea, LPT, and PB are the only four SRPGs released in the US) to Intelligent Systems' nine FE games (only 1 of which has been released in the US, but we're getting two more later this year). And I don't know about you, but I don't think Final Fantasy's base battle system has hardly changed at all since the original. We have three games with one command per round, six games with some variation of the ATB system, and two games with speed-based combat turns. Whatever. Both Fire Emblem and the Nippon Ichi PS2 games are excellent, and the ideal scenario is to play all of them. -------------------- |

Hmm, I thought Nippon Ichi was a company named after the owner, but I could be wrong, I can't read Japanese. ^^
Anyway, you could argue that 'any' turn-based RPG is the same battle system 'at the core', but they way that it's constructed is what makes it unique. My point isn't to rival Nippon Ichi's series with Final Fantasy, only to say that just because one system or story doesn't appeal to you in one game, doesn't mean the next one along won't be differen't enough for you to enjoy. Also I haven't played Rhapsody, although I would like to...I can't find such old US imports and don't have any kind of online account to ebay it... *le sigh* Edit: Also, as I said, there have been many other games RPG wise, try looking up the Atelier Iris series which is now on it's sixth instalment...but sadly still can't get past the US censorship... ¬_¬ This post has been edited by Mu the Squirrel on 14th May 2005 22:22 -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I have an extreme desire to play this game.
Etna is absolutely adorable. I was going to cosplay as her, but then I realized she doesn't have much of an outfit. The Prinnies are awesome. "DOOD" The only thing I wish is that the battle sounds had been left in Japanese or they had the option to make it Japanese again. -------------------- ..DDR..Maine.. ..Hikaroo-chan no Deviantart.. <Tiddles> And I love how people suggest "Why not call it my great name?????" when their name is clearly the worst thing ever. <Tiddles> "How about ; Mozilla Xplorer & Mozilla Xpress." <Tiddles> How about you die in a fire? |

Quote (Hikaroo) The prinnies are awesome. "DOOD" Have you ever been bombarded with Prinny Dance? One of the few times when I muted the television. Alternatively, they're pretty comical characters. You can throw them and make them explode, which is one of the oddest ways to inflict damage in the game. Exploring Prinny Land--where all the bad prinnies run away to--leads you to believe that they have a cult feeling going on, especially the level where they're all gathered around the Prinny God. Their attacks aren't half bad either, what with Prinny Dance's status effects and Pringer Beam's light-pillar fireworks. Hikaroo, if you ever play the game, I have one piece of advice for you:
Never ever throw your Prinnies. They explode. However, throwing enemy Prinnies is recommended (except in Prinny Land, where they don't explode). Quote Etna is absolutely adorable. I was going to cosplay as her, but then I realized she doesn't have much of an outfit. Well, there's always Flonne...but, then again, Flonne's really lame compared to Etna ![]() -------------------- ~ Aurora, exhale bloody air! Dark Holy! ~ |

I like throwing them. ^^ It's funny! Killing Prinnies through throwing doesn't count toward a bad ending so it's okay! hehehehe.

(RE:Disgaea - Hour of Darkness)
I just ordered this game, hope I like it, I've never really played TRPG's before except for a few hours at FF: Tactics Advance, which seemed addictive. I was ordering my FFXI Atlas then I got reading about this game, seems It looks like it has a heck of alot of stats and numbers and classes and maps and 'rules' etc, I hope I can work it all out enough to fit some enjoyment in there. ![]() Anyway, I'm glad I found this game has somewhat of an obsessive cult following, it must have some pull to some certain group of loonies and I feel I am a sufficient connoisseur of fine loonyness to get in on the action. -------------------- Whether you take the doughnut hole as a blank space or as an entity unto itself is a purely metaphysical question and does not affect the taste of the doughnut one bit. http://slightly-bitter.blog.co.uk |

Well, had the game like 2 days now, coming up to 10 hours played.
![]() This game is pretty scary, I swear it has some kinda special frequency coming from that is atuned to a certain part of the brain. Like I really hate the annoying little dweeb of a main character, like a young Tidus, that thinks he's evil, and is a dweebier. The Japanese humour coming from largley bad American voice acting just doesn't work (though the Etna actress is very good). And like, what are prinnies? "Doooooood!!" Ok, you are my official Suicide Squad now. ... Yet.... I can't turn it off... Must... Level... Must... Rain down gun and bow fire upon everything within a 5 block radius... Must kill... ![]() -------------------- Whether you take the doughnut hole as a blank space or as an entity unto itself is a purely metaphysical question and does not affect the taste of the doughnut one bit. http://slightly-bitter.blog.co.uk |

How can you guys level up that much, honestly? I've had the game for a while but i'm still exploring it, my levels are pretty hard to raise and i'm around level 150, which makes me curse in comparison to the level 500's I see in the dark council. And with lack of levels, I can't really explore the other areas can I? I've tried to petition to get new areas open, but the damn council is always "lol noep" So yeah, i'm at a loss with this game. All I could ever get opened was Prinny Land, which I promptly conquered. I like the gamet, but it's frustrating when I hear how lacking in comparison I am to others. I mean, level 4000? Jesus.

As Shotgunnova said, Cave of Ordeals 3 combined with raising levels, but itb would also help to have a good few statisticians combined to one of your items.
