Since I always try not to use walkthroughs, I really don't know what's going to happen each time.

So now, all my savegames lead to

the moon, with FuSoYa already in the party.

My average level is about 35. When I go back to 'Earth', I immediately enter the big robot.

The inside of this robot is just about doable, but the four elementals just keep totally owning me.
Now, I'm leveling up on the moon, until I reach level 50 or so, but maybe you guys know a better/quicker way to get fit for this battle?

And, is there merit in walking through that entire cave on the moon just now, or should I save it for later?

First, there isn't any really fast way to level up. One idea is to stay near that crystal temple or the Big Whale so you have easy access to full healing, and then take your time to play around with a bunch of your magic, since you'll encounter lots of cream-type enemies.

Second, if you're talking about the cave with the ring of land around it, that leads to the Bahamut summon. To get the summon, you'll have to defeat 3 Behemoths and then Bahamut (all four battles are mandatory, and then there's whatever else you encounter in the cave). The Behemoths don't really attack, but have a hard-hitting physical counterattack; Bahamut simply gives a countdown and then throws MegaNuke (or MegaFlare, depending on the game version) at your party, but you can reflect MegaNuke, so you'll want to have the Reflect (or Wall) spell on Rosa before you get into that.

And with Bahamut, you won't have to worry about anything anymore, really.

It's better to fight Bahamut when you have FuSoYa in your party because that allows 2 people to cast Wall/Reflect. Then you can save up to 4 people at a time....let Edge die....
