I train them all equally in terms of levels but if I can do so without jepordizing the balance of numbers, I'll try to avoid Umaro if I can. With no story, no controll, a poor vocabulary and abilities that aren't quite up to par with the others you can see why I don't like to use him. However on the bright side, he makes one hell of an airship gaurd. I'll probably use him in the final party at least once though, along side Gogo, Mog and Gau. You should be able to figure out why on your own, with about an ounce of thought.

Relm- Useless. And anyone in the game can pass off a half decent magic attack.
Strago- Old, Weak, no good equipment, uselessness of blue magic. Gau- Too lazy. I know he's amazing. Gogo- to quote my father- "If you're gonna do something don't do it half assed" -------------------- If you've been mod-o-fied, It's an illusion, and you're in-between. Well my fav five are celes sabin shadow setzer and mog (but since i can only have 4 in my party right now i have mog) so i tend to ignore everyone else, i don't think i've ever used strago or relm (unless i needed to i don't remember) locke and edgar are ok but still don't care to use them, Gogo and Umaro i've only recently gotten and haven't had a chance to use them.....ok and lemme tell u trying to get thru the phoenix cave with a strong party on the short end of it and a really weak team on the long end was not easy...i would put it another way but i think i'd get in big trouble

Well I don't really ignore anyone because I like to get the most out all my characters in all RPG games, but to list who I find most enjoyable to use;
From fave to least fave. Gogo: Poor equipment, but can do everything! I do love me some Gogo... Terra: Good equipment and attack power with fantastic magic and Morph. Locke: Good equipment, but over all Steal does it for me. I do love to steal! Edgar: Good equipment and his Tool command is an instant win for me. Sabin: Low defence, but great Blitz skills. His HP makes up for defence. Gau: Not fantastic, but, Cat Scratch. Need I say more? Celes: Her equipment helps, but Runic is a winner in many many fights. Strago: He seems to be better with the earlier Lores, the latter ones don't impress me much. Shadow: Good speed and occasional Interceptor counters. It was only my secong time through I really used Throw though, and only with throwing weapons...Mu does not like throwing many items. no no... Setzer: He's good, but his skills just never impressed me... Relm: I had no time for Sketch, but I did enjoy Control later on. Cyan: Good attack power and equipment... he was okay early on when his first SwdTech actually 'did' something. But latter, meh. Mog: His dance was too random when it did work. As semi-berserker characters go, Gau is better. Umaro: No! I dislike Umaro a great deal. He was a bore to level and never matched anyone in anything EVER. *cough* This is only playability mind, story wise is a whole other kettle of fish. ![]() -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Wind God and Stray Cat? Why are they useful for Gau? I looked for Wind God, but couldn't find such a monster.

'Wind God' is merely a term for a certain setup that, for most people, makes Gau an amazingly useful character. It occurs because the Tempest katana sometimes replaces a physical attack with the Wind Slash special, and if you equip it on Gau via the Merit Award, you can do certain things with 'attaching' his attack power to a wind element and other things involving the Genji Glove or Offering or something like that.
'Wind God Gau' was one of the reasons some people decided, after playing the game for a while, that Gau wasn't as useless as he seemed to be. Personally, he's always had a place anyways, even though I don't use that setup. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Thanks GMH. I'll be using that setup the next time I play FFVI. But Stray Cat? It isn't as rare as an Intangir so why does everyone have Gau rage into it?

Stray Cat, simply put, is THE most powerful physical attack you're going to see most of the time. You should think of Catscratch as Fight x 4 in every way. If you equip a Pearl Rod (via Merit Award) on Gau, he's not only going to deliver damage superior to Bum Rush, he also has a 25 % shot at casting a Pearl spell four times as powerful as the same Pearl spell cast from his Magic list.
Since Wind Slash is MT, getting a Catscratch Wind Slash resembles a Crusader summon in damage...without your party getting hit as well. The Wind God is a good effort in the WoR at turning Gau into the offensive Rambo he was in the WoB. His real strength at that point lies in his defensive abilities, though. Intangir is an awesome Rage as well as long as you Mute him before he starts his Rage. He can't cast Pep Up anymore and you have instant invincible Gau. Well, for the most part, the only thing that can get to him is an Instant Death attack, but what did you expect from an Intangir Rage anyway? ![]() -------------------- |

Although I may get some slack for this, I always use Locke, and beef him up. And Gogo because of his versatility.
I never use Relm; she's always truck me as physically and magically weaker, and Sketch, I just don't even bother. And Umaro; never been big on Berserkers. I think Xenosaga I is the only game wherein I have liked all the characters. -------------------- Fierce Legends Software Battle Designer Fierce Legends Software Website Fierce Legends Software Forums Please post in our forums; we are in need of help and input as we develop the Final Fantasy VI Prequel. |

I don't like to use Relm. She has the poorest defense and offense in the game, and she can't use the best weapons or armour in the game.
Stargo is also another chacarter I don't use. He's Lores are cool, but his Staffs suck though and he do dies easily. Umaro and Gau, you can't control them at all, I dont use them either. -------------------- Life....Hopes...Dreams. Where did they came from and where are the headed? I don't use Gau or Gogo much at all. Gogo's ability to do pretty much anything is diminished by the fact that he can't do anything well, and Gau irritates me.
Relm and Strago get spotty coverage at best; their magic stats are high enough to make them worthwhile sometimes, and they can wear the moogle costumes. ;-) -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

For some reason, I've never used Terra. I think it's mostly because her special ability isn't as interesting as the other characters' are. Gau, Umaro, and Mog fit in the same category because they tend to become uncontrollable, which sucks. I do use Mog often enough because of his moogle charm, though.
![]() I have yet to play with Strago, but his lores make him sound like a very interesting character to use. Having a SECOND set of spells means MASSIVE magic diversification. Especially since most lores stray from the usual "Do 'x' damage of 'y' element" spells most attack spells are like. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Yes. I tend to ignore Gau, since you don't know what kind of attack he will use when you use Rage. Umaro uses the same concept, but I like him anyway because he is powerful (and I think it is funny when he throws one of your characters at an enemy to do damage.)

I only use 4 characters :
Sabin - Blitzes. Terra - equipped with Economizer makes her the BEST magic user. Cyan - I dunno why i have him... Edgar - His Tools...Chainsaw tools, i mean. I don't exactly ignore the other characters...i just don't use them. |

Ah lemme see here...
Locke: Steal seems rather useful, and he can equip decent stuff. Stats don't seem too bad Terra: Not exactly my cup of tea... I've always thought that she was far too... irritating, not really appealing for my party I suppose... despite all that, she does learn magic naturally, morph is alright and she has good stats. Edgar: I have a soft spot for Ed, mainly because of the chainsaw. Tools is an excellent ability in the early game, and his stat's are decent. Celes: I like her more then Terra, not really sure why that just happens to be the case. Runic just seems a little better... good in the Magic Tower thingie Sabin: Awesome fighter, blitz can do catostrophic damage, and he's got a good persona. And I don't think he plays for the other team ![]() Cyan: I only used him once... seemed alright early in... but what happened? He went all crappy near the end Gau: I've yet to use him that often... but after hearing what he can do, it'll happen... Shadow: I have a thing for nijitsu... nothing weird or kinky, just cool is all. Throw can do great damage, and the random Interceptor counters are quite effective in WoB. Setzer: My personal, favorite character... I don't know why though. His weapons aren't really that incredible (and misleading thanks to our good buddy Woosley ![]() ![]() Mog: Can't complain, dance has some grand effects in both early and late game, depending on which one you use. Strago: Considering my enjoyment of once again having a blue mage, Strago's just the thing! Econo works mighty well with Lore as well. Relm: There is no one I ignore more. Even Umaro has more time then her! Substantially... I've yet to bring her into Kefka's Tower... Sketch, and even control, don't seem to be worth it. Umaro: I'm not big on berserkers, but a yeti... come on... show some love! ![]() Gogo: It can do almost anything, but it will never be the best at it. Versitility, but a simple lack of any strengths... has anyone actually just used it for mimic? So that's it, I usual have a mix involving Locke, Celes, Ed, Setzer, Strago or Sabin. Ocaisionally Shadow, but it depends. -------------------- Oh noes! Teh MSN Space! |

i really don't negelect getting characters, but in the WoR
i often don't get Terra, if somebody wants to stay away from something, i don't really feel like pushing them into it. i just use celes as a magic user use the two powerhouses Sabin and Edgar and shadow, with a genji/offering combo and i keep everyone else at decent levels -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Locke, Celes, Sabin and Terra always were my favorite.
I liked Cyan and Edgar, even though Cyan's SwrdTech is weak w/o some mega esper bonus damage! Muahahahah ![]() Mog's a great Dragoon. Gau's unappreciated but is absolutely the best character in the first quarter of the game (Catscratch + tier 2 spells + a couple of instant death spells?? Muahahah) Relm's Control is semi-useful, and Relm herself has a great amount of defense to counter her low HP. Shadow's just plain awesome. Throw + Interceptor is just great ![]() Strago's Lores really made me like him a lot. Umaro is actually a great character if you pump up his level high enough. I remember him dealing more damage than the some other characters at his level. Plus his relics allow him to nullify and absorb a couple of elements, making him semi-useful in the Fantatic's Tower. Gogo's Mimic is sweet, and his ability to use any Skill beside Morph made me enjoy him even more. A second Blue Mage? A second Stealer? A second anything! ![]() Setzer's Fixed Diced always had attracted me to use him more often, but, alas, I still think that his Slot and his GP Rain are horrible moves... Nope, I love 'em all equally. Mind you, some you have to get used to more often, as some characters have extremely unique battle styles. I do tend to ignore Umaro and Gogo as you can't give 'em spells with epsers... so I usually won't bring them into Kefka's towers only because I want to give the Magic-learners a chance to get a few new spells in there. Other then that, I'd be happy to use 'em ![]() -------------------- "A little tight, but the price was right" - Locke "Oh, what a Fuddy Duddy" - Relm "..." - Shadow "I'm a General, not some love starved twit" - Celes "Although Edgar showers his attention on the ladies, most are smart enough to pay him no attention. Haha, I suppose we all have our favourites and skills we consider usefull, I mean every game we have this issue. But So far I must agree with Laszlow's list the most, He seems to be pretty accurate and about the same as mines would have been. So I wouldn't bother to post mines.

I just can't see why so many people can't find a use for Strago.
Strago is an excellent character. With a high magic power stat, all spells AND Lores learned, along with a Gem Box, he's easily the best magic user in the game. Grandtrain costs less MP than Ultima, yet deals out just as much damage. Pearl Wind is a great way to heal up the party if they're suffering and Strago has a decent amount of HP or so. Aquarake and Aero are good elemental spells. And that's not even mentioning his abilities with esper magic. Give him the Quick spell, and he can wreak havoc in the form of multiple spells coming down from powerful lores to strong esper magic. Strago+Gem Box+Quick+all spells and all lores=The BEST magic user in the game. This post has been edited by Piffer on 16th August 2005 22:44 |
