I'm not sure if this really goes into suggestions, because it's not going to really change the site. But for forum members with AIM, I was wondering if we could make an AIM chat. It doesn't cost anything, of course, and all we'd have to do was invite ourselves to "Chat Caves of Narshe".
I think y'all are really intersting, and it'd be fun to talk to y'all in a chatroom ^.^ Daddy won't let me download IRC, and the other thing for the IRC chat-where you don't have to download it- doesn't work for me. This is also to see if anyone's interested in the least other than me. I don't like going into a dead chat! heh. Ohh, and if anyone's wondering, there would not be those bots coming in there, and rarely would non-CoN people come in the chat so it'd be nice. 'Course, this would only work if you had AIM or gAIM.. Anyone interested? ^^ -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Might wanna try talking with Tiddles to see if he can sort out the Java chat thing (I gather he hates knowing something he wrote doesn't work
![]() I prefer IRC myself, but if I didn't have a choice, I can see how I might be interested. ![]() -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... It's a software issue for Relm, not a programming problem on Tiddles' part. Java chat works fine for me.

Yes, but I think he'd still want to know.

Yeah, I don't think I have Java going on this computer. Pardom me for being program-retarded, but I think my dad disabled it or something. If anyone knows how to make it function again, though, I'd listen and try to follow along. ^^

Does your father have specific reasons for not wanting you in IRC or using Java? There could actually be a good reason for it not being turned on.
Otherwise, go here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and use the Windows manual installation. Do you use Firefox or IE for a browser? Something else? -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

Dad doesn't like me downloading much of anything. He's kind of like Red from That 70's show... Only he plays Diablo 2. For a while, he didn't really trust AIM too much either, but I convinced him it helped me with my homework (woot, smarterchild!).
Either way, I used WalMart Connect, but have IE also. As long as I can remember, Java's been disabled. Even in August when I saw Gaia Online, I couldn't see the "pink links" they have. -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Java is safe. You should download it. Unfortunately, it may be a bit slow loading, even with the latest download version.

Caves of Narshe Chat
Sorry, you need a Java-enabled browser to use these applets. Either download Java and install it into your browser, or obtain your own IRC client. ^The error message when I tried that chat just now. Either way, I think I'll ask Dad about just downloading IRC, I'd like to see how it works. 'Course, he doesn't get home 'till 11, so I'll have to wait it out. Either way, I've my doubts he'll say yes... x.x Though I did get really close to being in the chat! The loading bar was about 40% there, so if anyone saw me in the chat for like... a second, that's why! So, I guess this means no AIM chat, then, huh? ^^; -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Why not cheat a little? Get Trillian or another, stand-alone, IRC client. Say it's helpful too, as it IS. Acess to CoN chat can lead to help with homework, help on some other issues, and even better typing and english skills (Helped me in that respect!).
Oh, and a wider knowledge of world affairs on occassion (Note: Still an ignorant Jock socialist nutter. But now I know more to convenietly ignore thanks to CoNChat*) ![]() So try that fact for size. Access to CoN chat will be helpful to you! It even keeps you out of trouble, as you can ask 'Is this iffy post I'm going to do OK?' when you stumble onto a grey area of the rules. Aaanyway, I think I'd be opposed to an AIM chat channel as a replacement or even as an alternative, for shelfish reasons I have. Many people dislike AIM chatrooms and the infamous AOLers with the awful typing skills and the dreaded leet. It's a little bit elitist in my case, but I just really hate AOL chat rooms and anything that runs the risk of Yahooer's and MSN'ers wandering in speaking 1337 and Txt, especially when IRC already does the same if not a better job, and discourages those people from joining as they'd rather stick to the evironment they're used to. Plus, I don't use AIM and I'd rather have one CoNChat for all than one I won't want to go to and one I do go to. Besides, 2 chats is extra work for the mods and staff, and they're already overworked trying to not only mod these forums, chat, do updates and upgrades to the site, but even get on with that real life thing I keep hearing about... *This is a joke. Quote (Del S) Why not cheat a little? Get Trillian or another, stand-alone, IRC client. Say it's helpful too, as it IS. By the way, I have Trillian Basic (they call the free edition 'Basic') version 3, and the IRC capability on it sucks. (The AIM capability may also be kinda annoying, depending on your style of managing computer windows and desktop objects.) If you're going to get Trillian for its IRC functionality, I've heard (but not verified) that version 2 is good. As for whether I endorse the idea of creating an AIM CoNchat--I would as long as there's someone to mod it. Seeing as how the mods have been pretty busy lately, I would oppose it given their opposition. It would, however, be nice to see CoN expand further, and for the satisfaction that I'd feel from seeing one of my favorite websites expand (and for the fact that I might actually learn how to use AIM chat) I would support it. (If you're a member of the press and want a 5-second 'sound-bite' that would summarize my position, then I'll say "No." Or just call me a flip-flopper.) (In case you're wondering, I occasionally stop by the #narshe IRC channel, but not regularly. In my opinion, it's a cool place to hang out, but it's not my favorite place in the world. I like the forums a lot more than the chat.) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Trillian 2 is pay only. If you want free Trillian, it's either 0.74 or 3.0 basic. 0.74 probably has better IRC, but 3.0 is better in every other respect.
In neither case is it an outstanding IRC client, but the advantage in your case is that it can also handle AIM. You could put it to your father as an "AIM upgrade" of sorts, and use the IRC functionality that way. If you get errors about Java not being installed, first try going to the main chat page and checking the "Backwards-compatible mode" checkbox. This works around some bug in IE or Sun Java which prevents Sun Java loading our applet. If it still doesn't work, you may be able to re-enable Java in your browser by going to the Tools menu, Internet Options, Advanced tab and sniffing around for options (It's been so long since I used Internet Explorer that I couldn't say exactly where). If you have updated versions of Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you may also need to get to the Set Program Access and Defaults options, which can be found on the left of Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet, and allow the use of some Java VM. And some or all of that probably requires that you're using an administrator account on the computer. Anyway: the problem with an AIM chat, for me, is that it'd fracture the chat we already have. I think it's best to keep it all in one place, and traditionally, that place is IRC, with few people unable to connect entirely. I'm really sorry you're having difficulty getting in, but splintering a new chat just wouldn't be a good idea. |

Mkay. I understand. ^^
One thing, you wouldn't really need a mod for an AIM chat. They wouldn't be able to do anything special, AIM power-wise, so they'd be like any other user. Plus, usually when someone gets too annoying you just make another chat! Edit T.T This is evil. I finally get up the courage to sneak around and do the ten minute download without telling my dad, and you have to pay for it. I'm 16 and jobless, how in the world'm I supposed to pay for it? But I did manage to get in the chat. ^_________^ Yaaay! This post has been edited by RelmArrowney on 5th May 2005 22:30 -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. You don't need to pay for mIRC, it just bugs you all the time for cash.

Edit stuff that used to be here was edited out because I made a mistake of misreading Also, RelmArrowney, if you're thinking of pursuing the route of getting an AIM 'upgrade', then get Gaim. It's one of the best unofficial AIM clients around, and it also does IRC. If you actually do get permission from your father (hopefully) to download and run an IRC program, though, I strongly recommend X-Chat over mIRC. Having used both before, I find X-Chat a lot easier and more intuitive to use. And it doesn't even nag you for money. Of course, you'll have to find some way to convince your father that you have self-restraint. There're cool places to be, like the chat channels of CoN, Planet Megaman, and OC Remix, but there're also some very nasty (read: usually involves obscenity and pornography) stuff out there. You'll have to make sure you won't wander into becoming involved with that trash. Don't you use IE or something like that? They usually let you use java @_@
Or you could download mIRC.. and try to hide it. xD Or convince him that mIRC is school-related. (If he let you get away with AIM, he should let you get away with Ice-Chat, mIRC, or Trillian ![]() Yea..but AIM chat is kind of a pain in the ass. Don't you have to get invited to go there? :/ Or you could just invite all the people on your buddy list into an msn convo xD |
