My favorite bad guy of all time is Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He is bad. So EVIL. The thieving rat.

I did a topic just like this for video games awhile ago (called "Favorite Video Game Villains), but if this extends to anything, then I'll add a few.
The Riddler from Batman. I am a trivia/games/puzzles geek, so I sort of identify with him, and his riddle clues for all of his crimes totally kick ass. My all-time favorite episode in my all-time favorite cartoon is the Return of the Riddler episode from Batman: The Animated Series. The last two scenes in that episode (the final party scene and the Arkham scene) are wonderful. Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes novels. This guy is great because he is basically Holmes' Id. He is Holmes' match in genius, creativity, and reputation, but he is a criminal mastermind instead of a brilliant detective. The fact that you see both Moriarty and Homes in action from the point of view of the oblivious Dr. Watson only adds to his mystique. Peter Wiggin from Ender's Game and all of its sequels and spinoffs. He is the ultimate manipulator, using the children of the Bugger War to strengthen his position as Hegemon of Earth. It is no coincidence that my favorite book in this excellent series is Shadow of the Hegemon, where Peter, Bean, and Achilles are all featured strongly. Vergil from Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. This dude is the greatest katana-wielding/mysterious-origins/silver-haired final boss of all time. Eat it, Sephiroth. The third and final battle against him is one of the most difficult boss battles I have ever won (right up there with Mega Man X5 and Death from the original Castlevania), and all of his cutscenes absolutely rule. Dhaos from Tales of Phantasia. Not only is he an imposing super-powerful dude, Namco humanizes him by revealing his not-so-evil motives. He also made for some good cutscenes and entertaining boss battles. Il Duce from The Boondock Saints. He only has about fifteen minutes worth of scenes, but in the scene where his character is introduced (his exit from prison) just oozes cool. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but please watch the movie; you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about. Bruno from Strangers on a Train. While less crazy than Norman Bates and less dashing or mysterious than John Robie, I think Bruno (I can't remember his last name) is Alfred Hitchcock's greatest creation. This guy is so creepy any of his dialogue will have you hanging on to virtually every word. His complex motives and twisted logic make for some classic Hitchcock moments (especially the first carnival scene, the tennis match, the night stalker scene, and the carousel scene). Millions Knives from Trigun. It seems that I have a thing for villains which are dark sides of the main character. In the primary conflict in one of my favorite cartoons, Vash fights to preserve life while Knives fights to annihilate it, but Vash destroys while Knives manipulates. Classic. Plus, his gunmanship and general ass-kicking skills even exceed that of his twin brother. Sorry for being so long-winded. If you haven't read, seen, or played any of those books, movies, games, or series, then you are seriously missing out. -------------------- |

I have to start this with *AHEM*
THE DARK LORD OF THE SITH - DARTH VADER. For the voice, costume and all-round nastyness... In the category "team of villains" the winners are: The Dark Warriors from 8-bit theater! If there ever was a bunch of misfits bent on destroying the world that deserves some award for it, it's them. They fail, but they'll try again. Crafty, intelligent, skilled, and powerful (as in Garland = crafty [needlework], Vilbert = intelligent, Bikke = Skilled and D'rizzl = powerful) they truly are the best gang of bad guys in the world ![]() -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Darth Vader, and you know where he's from. One of my favourites, and many others too, even though I'm not too into Star Wars. Because he just looks and acts so very evil, and it's out of a duty to a master.
Besides, he's so much better as an evil git than a trainee Jedi knight who has an incredibly low kick-ass factor. Daleks from Doctor Who (And you SHOULD know where they're from, dash it! ) because they're Daleks. And ONE Dalek is going to kick some serious butt from the looks of it in this coming saturday's Doctor Who. Big Brother from 1984. For all the reader knows, he may not exist, but I still think that as a representation of the entire false lies of Ingsoc, B-B is a great evil chappie. That the novel is a brilliant read helps too. Captain Ryan from Dog Soldiers. I don't know why, but I just liked the arrogant, toffee-nosed special forces captain because he was such an annoying person... Possible spoilers: highlight to view And rather literraly a son of a bitch, because he KNEW he would become a werewolf, but just sat there smiling nonetheless! Horus from Warhammer 40,000: The character of Horus is just one that is very interesting. Like millions of evil forces before, he fell from light into dark, in this case, from the guidance of his father, the God-Emperor of Mankind, into the clutches of the Chaos gods. The resulting battle was Loyal versus Traitor, across the entire galaxy, billions upon billions of lives snuffed out in the devastating civil war in the Imperium, from which it never recovered. It was Light Versus Dark, and Order Versus Chaos. What makes his betrayal so much more interesting is that he was the Emperors most beloved son, and one of the most respected amongst his brother primarches. Necrons (Pre-C'Tan) from warhammer 40,000. The previous image of these metallic skeltal alien robots was rather sweet. Sinister raiders who appeared as if from nowehere, and faded away after beign defetaed, or uttery crushed their enemies. The reimaging still has them as raiders, but the addition of the C'tan Superbeings means they're somewhat a little less interesting. Rather than being a seemingly motivless force, they're now just pawns of higher beings. Kefka- I like nutty evil people who destroy a lot of things, okay?! Hmm... My favorite Villains (anywhere) are:
Ansem (Kingdom Hearts) Naraku (Inuyasha) Bowser (Mario) Kefka (FF6) "You son of a submariner!!!" Galaxia (Sailor Moon**) Fawful (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) "I HAVE FRURY!!!" Plankton (SpongeBob SquarePants*) Simon Barsinister, Riff Raff, Overcat, etc... (Underdog**) Mojo Jojo (Powerpuff Girls*) Mandark (Dexter's Lab*) Katz (Courage the Cowardly Dog**) and, last but not least... Sephiroth!!!! (FF7 & KH) *= Even though I don't watch the show anymore, I still can't get it out of my system... you know what I mean? ![]() **=These are silly shows that I still watch whenever I get the chance ![]() This post has been edited by Midori Tsukino on 26th April 2005 02:10 -------------------- Yep, I'm a n00b here, but we've all been n00bs in our lives once in a while... - Darth freakin' Vader
- The Joker - Dr. Evil - Kefka. Like all the above villains in a single package. Quote (laszlow @ 25th April 2005 10:41) Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes novels. Amen. Moriarty was always one of the few Holmes characters that interested me, which eventually prompted me to read more of the novels. hmm, for some reason Shredder from the original teenage mutant ninja turtles cartoons springs to mind. He was just funny. while still remaining a flipping good nemesis. Just pretend the films didn't exist though.
Others: Sephiroth Doc Oc (spiderman2) Saruman (lord of the Rings) Smaug (The Hobbit) Magneto As you can see the bad guy has to generally intelligent and extremely powerful. But why do the bad guys have to die so much on us? It's annoying that so few of them survive being so evil. Best bad guys in 40K? This would be a hard call, since every villain from whichever universe differs too greatly. The Riddler, for instance, from Batman is completely cerebral, so is the Joker. All mind games and intelectual (that being the former, not the latter
![]() Then the Star Wars villains. Darth Vader, of course, is the uberness of badass, not much to say. But I personally liked Grand Admiral Thrawn better. He's the greatest mind in Imperial history, and the whole Star Wars galaxy. The end of Return of the Jedi would have turned a lot more in favor of the Empire had Thrawn been in command rather than Vader or Palpatine. I like to say that Kefka is the greatest video game baddie. Nothing intelectual, complex, or puzzling, just pure-blooded insanity. No one else can create such a mood of darkness IMO. Also (even though this may sound kind of odd) Tom Riddle (Voldemort) from the Harry Potter books. In every one of those, you always get this odd sense whenever a situation concerning his cult comes up, and even eerier in the one where he actually fights. No to mention the mystery that surrounds him. The darkness of those books is hard to escape. Quote Peter Wiggin from Ender's Game and all of its sequels and spinoffs. He is the ultimate manipulator, using the children of the Bugger War to strengthen his position as Hegemon of Earth. It is no coincidence that my favorite book in this excellent series is Shadow of the Hegemon, where Peter, Bean, and Achilles are all featured strongly. For all the reader knows, he may not exist, but I still think that as a representation of the entire false lies of Ingsoc, B-B is a great evil chappie. That the novel is a brilliant read helps too. Good choice, interesting too. The fact that this 'villian' is more a paranoid atmosphere and state of being makes it very different from most classic villian choices. Great book, the workings of modern government owe a lot to it. ![]() I doubt you've read any of Haruki Murakami, but in the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, there is a character that reminds me of 1984 actually, he is the omnious, faceless politcal man that the main protaginist hates intensley. Noburo something-or-other, very well written bad-guy. --- Another one I could mention is Kitano from Battle Royal, again, no the most 'normal' choice, but I always prefer bad-guys that are human, that aren't pure evil, I don't think pure evil excists in a human, although this guy took a school class to an island to murder each other, he had his reasons. ![]() -------------------- Whether you take the doughnut hole as a blank space or as an entity unto itself is a purely metaphysical question and does not affect the taste of the doughnut one bit. http://slightly-bitter.blog.co.uk |

What's more, you reminded me of another good choice: Jack from Lord of the Flies. The way he falls prey to his Id and drags all of the kids with him is nothing short of creepy, and let's not forget the boulder scene. Oh, and for those of you who haven't read the book and have only seen the Simpsons episode parodizing it, it's the episode where all of the kids are stranded on a desert island and Jack's role is represented by Nelson; good episode. -------------------- |

Actually, Ephide from Fire Emblem looked rather hot without that hood on... *drools*
I also kind of liked Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter. I hated her, and that's what I liked about her. The best villians are the ones you hate. ![]() So in that vein, I'd also have to go with King Louis from The Man in the Iron Mask. He was just so mean to Dartainian, plus he was a horribly tyrannical king. Then there's Wiegraf. He was so darn vengeful, and also I'm going with him for partially the same reason I went with Ephidel... *drools again* Then Miluda. I liked her I-hate-all-the-nobles-I'll-kill-them-all-if-it's-the-last-thing-I-ever-do attitude. Are we talking games, movies, novels...all of the above?
Game: Kefka from "Final Fantasy VI" or Sae from "Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly." They're both insane; Kefka in a funny way, and Sae in a really scary way. I guess I like them because they're a little more fleshed out, instead of being the typical villain who wants to take over and/or destroy the world because that's what villains do. Movie: Grand Moff Tarkin from "Star Wars: A New Hope", Lucius Malfoy from the "Harry Potter" movies. Tarkin seems more evil than Vader does, to me, and I love the performance in the Harry Potter movies--the character just doesn't seem as wicked in the books. Novel: Valmont and Merteuil in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." Final redemption aside, these guys are just nasty, soulless, and cruel. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Quote (karasuman @ 18th May 2005 13:24) Movie: Grand Moff Tarkin from "Star Wars: A New Hope", Lucius Malfoy from the "Harry Potter" movies. Tarkin seems more evil than Vader does, to me... Hm...this could be due to the fact that Tarkin is more "Ambicious, megalomaniac, cold bastard" evil and Vader is rather "Menacing, charismatic, looming" evil. A good example of what this differrence is, would be what they used to get information out of Leia: Vader tortured her with the goddam mind probe (floating ball with spikes and needles. HURTS A LOT). Tarkin said: "Okay, talk, or we'll blast your home planet to smitherines(spelling?)". And when she told him where the 'base' was he said: "Thanks, we'll blast your home anyway." BTW,Tarkin is [or rather - WAS] higher ranked than Vader in the imperial army, but Vader doesn't really care about this. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark.
