I was on RPGamer.com and noticed that there is another spinoff coming out. Final Fantasy VII: Snowboarding. From the screenshots posted, it appears to be just the snowboarding minigame from FFVII. Another mobile game.

You mean none of our multi-person staff ever posted news about that? Maybe we're more jaded than we thought.
Anyway, yeah, I saw it, and thought it looked daft. Wise choice for a mobile game, though, simple yet playable. The look of it is really rough, though, they should have just made it sprite based. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Yikes they really have gone spinoff crazy! I can't really complain, at least at this point anyway. They're making all this new stuff based on my fave game of all time.
They just better make sure the main game and film that comes out are extremely good. 'Cause you know what they say, you shouldn't mess with a legend. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

Whatever happened with Before Crisis, the prequel to FF7?

Before Crisis is just another Mobile game based on the Turks before the incidents that took place in FF7 happen. It's still slated to come out, but I'm not exactly sure when. I do know that the site's offical website is cool as hell, I know I'll be downloading that game to my phone for sure.
I'm actually really looking forward to "Dirge Of Cerberus", the Vincent spinoff that looks horribly like Devil May Cry. I really enjoyed Vincent's character, hopefully this spinoff does him justice and maybe we'll get a bit more on his past. I heard about the snowboarding game too, I think that SquareEnix is going a bit triggerhappy with all these FF7 spinoff games, honestly I didn't mind the Vincent game, and Before Crisis was fine. I was exstatic when I heard about Advent Children, but at the moment, I think they're definatly pushing it. Next thing you know, Tifa, Yuffie and Aerith are going to get their own X-2 style game. That's when I'm going start crying myself to sleep at night. Ooooh they better not bring Aerith back. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Before Crisis has been out since September, but it's only available in Japan. It's not even at all compatible with celular phone technology anywhere else in the world, as all other countries' cel. phone technology (including the U.S.A's) is a good deal behind Japan's.
That said, the U.S.A. will be getting Final Fantasy VII: Snowboarding, as it's not as complicated technologically. Well, there is certainly nothing wrong with spinoffs--if you don't like it, you don't have to buy it. But it's when they make a remake of the origional and completely screw it up when I get upset.
I'm not saying I wouldn't mind a remake with better graphics, but I think it's a little too soon to start that nonsense. -------------------- |

Now that would be cool ![]() I'm strangely inclined to agree (to both points!), but wouldn't the latter really be closer to Tenchu? Oh well, either way, that would probably be fun. The current crop don't look very good, and the Snowboarding one is just very unappealing to me. Not only do I not have a moobile phone, but I hate the damn things now due to the endless wave of irritiating Jamster ringtones beloved of Chavs and the metally challenged. Anything Final Fantasy so much as being on the same medium as that damn frog is a worrisome prospect to me now... Aaanyway, I feel that these various spin-offs will eventually go away if we ignore them. they're not going to set the wrold afalme and make FF7 any better, in fact, from the poor-fanficesque nature of most of the spinoffs (rich coming from me, eh?!) , I think it's going to be detrimental to FF7's overall appeal, just as FF X-2 affects the overall appeal of FF X... In any case, I would personally more like to see a spinoff game involving Terra, Locke, Edgar, Sabin, etc.. What's with FFVII getting so much (in my opinion, lame) attention? Interestingly though, I've noticed that there's been quite a lot of hype about these spinoffs, but 'Before Crisis' hasn't come out yet, nor has 'Dirge of Cerberus', and now they announce 'Snowboarding'. I'll have to see something more than just talk and pictures to be convinced, and I'm still going to see this as milking a cash cow. And in any case, this particular game ('Snowboarding') still strikes me as an attempt to leech off of FFVII, as opposed to adding any new value to the original game's concept and story. I would see this as a snowboarding game that will end up as could-have-been-made-using-any-other-set-of-characters-but-we-chose-this-because-it's-going-to-sell-better. (And 'Dirge of Cerberus' sounds much more like a Castlevania title than a Final Fantasy VII spinoff title.) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. This is all a part of the FFVII Project (it has an official name, actually, though I dont know it). This is why a remake is almost impossible, as FFVII is getting the "treatment" as it is. I personally think that they are ruining a good game by making so many spinoffs.
The only ones I am interested in are Dirge and Crisis Core. The others (including Children) are meaningless and just gonna kill a great game. Damn, Squenix. Let it be. The polymorphic project is called the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII." On a note related to the above Post, by the way, I've only ever seen one of the "FFVII Sequel Doomsday" folks offer actual reasoning for why they think that it could degrade the game other than "They're making too much and it's totally going to kill it as a result"... and interestingly enough, that person disliked Final Fantasy VII. My point being, we don't know that these new works in the Compilation will hurt the game. They may very well be written better than the original work. As far as its structural integrity goes, I can't really see how these new titles could harm the original unless they just plan on feeding us more plotholes, as the storyline of the original was in dire need of Plot Cement for all those holes. indeed stories are not a science -- we don't always need everything explained. part of ff7's innovation *was* the exquisitely complex story that never fully explained itself. why make more stories for the ff7 universe? the story of the ff7 universe was complete as it is. that's the way many of us see it.
do they warrant degradation of the game? who knows. i'm skeptical of square lately as they haven't put out a good game since ffx, and they *seem* decisively to be catering to the cash cow more than anything these days. but its not to say that they don't have an awesomely talented team of artists, writers, and developers; who knows what they might put out with a little good leadership? still, the bottom line is that nothing needed to be added to ff7. especially not bullshit movies that feature aerith and sephiroth. |

Everytime I think of FVII's many spinoffs, I am reminded of Disney's Land Before Time series and the like. One is enough. More sequels usually spell doom. People may get sick of the overused characters and plots, etc. Its like Dynasty Warrior too a little. Way too many. I love FFVII, but I think it's getting WAAAAAAY too much attention. It wasn't THAT great, nor is this going to be any better. Advent Children is at least a new take, and maybe Crisis Core is something, but all in all, the other FFs deserve more attention, IMO.
I do, however, respect your opinion Squall. I see your point. I am simply think that Squenix is milking FFVII for all itd worth. A game that is enshrined (by not having so many spinoffs) usually leaves a greater impact. I feel this way about FFT. The game is fantastic, and it is even more so by the fact that it hasn't gotten such a beating with so many compilations. I just hope that FFVII doesnt kick the bucket. I doubt it will, as the fanboys are unwavering. They soemtimes drive me insane. "FVII>all other games" begins to piss me off. That is, quite possible, the WORST propostion I have ever heard about a good game. Come on, it did nothing more for its genre than OoT did. You dont see OoT getting spinoffs, do you? I've only seen one Tekken spinoff (and it sucked). I dont mean to say that FFVII is bad, because it is in no way bad. I also dont want to attract flame, I just mean to express my opnion. Its pointless to argue with a FFVII fanboy, Ive noticed, so if there are any reading this post, I probably wont respond. Again, I still like VII, I just feel it needs to be put to rest. Or.....*gasp*....REMADE! Good day, all. Most people probably like FFVII more because it's more recent, and with today's generation of young gamers they'd have no clue as to who Terra or Cecil or Sabin or Golbez is, it's just too far back for them and they probably don't have an SNES and not go near Anthology and Chronicles because of the way it looks. I agree that FFVII is overrated, I mean it's a great game, but so is FFV and FFVI, and do you see anything based on them? Not really, It's like hit cartoon shows, once they become really well known they start merchandising and make more money, so (in my opinion) FFVII is popular among gamers so they start launching spin offs and such...but that's just one little bear's opinion of course.

I understand the marketing thing...it just is frustrating. FVII is even moe overrated than Halo, which is quite the feat. *sigh* I wish that thye'd just drop it.
