I've heard a rumor that if you are EXTREMELY nice to Aeris, and completly rotten towards Tifa, that at Aeris' death, Tifa will push Aeris from the altar and will be stabbed instead, then, Aeris will die later in the game during a scene in the Great Glacier.

Now, I KNOW that this rumor isn't true for the American Version, but as for the Japanese version...is it?

Given the ramifications of such an event, the japanese version would have to be COMPLETELY different to accomodate having Aeris in the game.

Generally rumors are like this. People assume the japanese version has so many magical and strange new features, and they often do. Only these features are often very minor things, such as being able to rename Cyan's swordtechs in 6, or a cruder language/level of violence/sex. And they're only removed because they either cause problems when translated in another language (space issues, generally) or because the content needs a little censoring to make it overseas. Note how a completely different second half of the game or hidden major characters do not fit the bill here.

There is no big hidden major secret in the japanese version of any game. Especially not one of this size. The effort required to remove this, in fact, to disable and fully extract the code which allows the game to determine wether the event branches or not, costs money. And if it were merely disabled, it could be triggered with a gameshark or activated within the debug room.

Finally, it's pretty easy to crack open the files on the game's disks and to hunt around for text. The lack of any real text for Aeris (save for a few minor exceptions) past disc one and the lack of any new weapons or equipment for her past the Temple of the Ancients (gameshark) hints at this.

But the final, undeniable proof that this is bunk is the size of the end video: over 150 megs. Since it would have to be re-rendered in its entirety to accomodate Aeris (and a different ending), that's well over 300 megs of video data right there. The rest of the game occupies too much space to fit in what's available. Add in additional scenario data, text data, and events, and it rapidly becomes impossible to fit both Tifa and Aeris on disk 3. Or anywhere past her death, in fact.

Hm...yeah...you have a point there. Though...there was another rumor where Aeris original death was to be held in the Great Glacier in a giant icy room. On a site I viewed awhile back it mentioned how Sephiroth wasn't wearing gloves when he first jumped from atop the altar, then he did when masamune stabbed through Aeris, it was said that Aeris didn't die until later.

Thats why I had my suspicions when I heard of Tifa dying first, then Aeris.

Hmm, I think it's time to lay the Aeris rumors to rest. smile.gif

Aeris' death scene was fully rendered in the Temple of the Ancients, complete with matching scenary. She is fully absent from the game and all videos rendered with characters exclude her. The amount of space required to generate and store new videos on the CDs is too great, meaning such a thing is impossible unless Square originally planned to make the game into a 5-CD epic story.

Independant of whatever Square may have planned, or what internet websites (which are, of course, never trying to propagate false rumors) may have to say on the subject...
- Aeris dies at the end of disc 1 in the Temple of Ancients.
- Aeris cannot be revived.
- Tifa never dies during the course of the game.
- Barret is not Cloud's father.

Silverlance... such a well thought out answer, and one fatal flaw.

She dies at the City of the Ancients, not the Temple. The Temple has the ziggurat and the maze and the Evil wall; The City has the shell houses and the underground crystal city.

Agh, lol, my bad. Yes, that's what I meant to say. wink.gif Although she DOES leave the party at the Temple of the Ancients, she doesn't die there.

Meh, it's a sunday afternoon. Still recovering from the weekend's festivities. I blame the merry hoard of tequilla screwdrivers I downed last night. dry.gif >_>

May it also be pointed out that the game's FMVs were all made before the environment maps, coming after only the script. All the FMVs on the game are unlockable. There's no alternate FMV for the scene in which Aerith dies in the City of the Ancients, or the ending.

Good work, by the way, Silverlance.
